user reviews of the Salmon and Ball, Bethnal Green

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Always seems friendly from both the customers and barstaff.Still attracts the genuine good as gold down to earth born and bred cockneys as opposed to the new style of EastEnders.
Well worth a visit and very handy for the tube.

Was in here yesterday.
Nice normal old school pub.Decent pint and decent proper locals.Service with a smile as well.
Great pub.

Popped in after an Orient game to catch the late game on Sky. Excellent pint of Guinness and a fairly laid back atmosphere. Nothing spectacular but does the job.

Me and a few friends often go in to the Salmon on a Saturday night before heading into central, never a bad night, it used to be a shit hole but has been turned right around and is now one of our favourite pubs in the area. }

Always a good mixed crowd in, hardly ever any trouble, and on the one occasion I have seen something about to escalate it was dealt with quickly and fairly by the guy behind the bar.

Quite cheap drinks prices, with 3 vodkas and mixers being less than a tenner, not bad for being 1 tube stop away from the city.

Definitely should be your first choice for a drink when leaving the underground! (as it is literally 3metres away!)

After our experience here last week and the pub's reputation I had to leave the following review, for those that just want a number score it's 9/10, for those that want to know why... read on;

Me and a few friends went in here last week before watching boxing at York Hall which is near by, I was a little dubious at first as I used to live in the area and it didn't used to be a very nice pub at all.

We opened the doors to a blast of warmth, chatter and music playing, the pub was very busy due to the boxing crowd and another event that was happening elsewhere in the area (this is, I'm assuming, on top of the regular and passing trade).

When I saw just two bar staff (covering a bar full of people) I started having my doubts, and even suggested we should to another pub. However I was greatly surprised when we were acknowledged and told "I'll be right with you" almost as soon as I'd stepped to the bar. Less than 30 seconds later I had my order taken and dealt with alongside 3 other orders and had all the drinks in front of me in under 3 minutes, and this was by a guy recovering from a broken hand!!

We stayed for a couple of drinks before heading off to the boxing and were that impressed that we decided to go back before the last fight had even started, when we walked back in we were asked how the fights were, when we mentioned we'd left early the Barman pointed to the TV's and winked, they were showing the same event we'd just left, he then asked if we would like the same again and remembered the exact drinks we'd had earlier in the night.

This really impressed as the pub had earlier been very busy and we had only ordered 2, maybe 3, drinks.

We stayed for a couple more and chatted with the Barmaid and a few of the regulars who were all a laugh, but had to leave to catch trains etc.

All in all, it seems as though a leopard can change it's spots and we will certainly be paying it a visit again soon.

Oh what a night!!!! Best covers band have seen in a long time. The Jam, TheWho, R.E.M Oasis etc, Great!! Lead singer is the nuts, Slight hangover to nurse but was well worth it,,

As someone who has lived in the area for over 60 years and who has frequented many an East End boozer I can say, with my hand on my heart, that you won't find a more traditional East End pub anywhere this side of Albert Square.

I'm always met with a smile, have a great laugh with the staff, regulars and new customers and have become firm friends with all. Incredibly cheap prices on selected drinks, which being a pensioner means I get to socialise for much longer than other pubs would allow, which at my age is very important.

Great pub for sports, live bands or just a nice quiet pint or two.... and always a nice bit of banter going around between the regulars.

barfly47 - 30 Nov 2012 11:12
Just moved to the area and so pleased i have a real pub to enjoy my spare time.
Everything u could want from which is now going to be my local, All the sport u need, DJ on friday , band on sat, footie on sun and the best juke box i have ever seen, on top of that service with a smile, What more could anyone want.
langdale32 - 28 Nov 2012 17:00
what a great place to spend an evening, The staff extremely helpful and efficient.
Prices are customer friendly, loved the atmosphere and the Band on sat night first class, cant wait to visit again. Rockin night with Jimmy C and the blues Dragons. Love it!!!

Ego trip 'Mother123' ? Cocaine trip more like. The older of the 2 managers is a serious cokehead.Crap pub.
boundsgreenboy - 18 Jul 2012 11:40
manager is obviously on some sort of ego trip.
mother123 - 22 Jun 2012 19:03
was in the other day and the manager there seems to be picking on someone for no apparent reasona real bully--truly an obnoxious host.
mother123 - 15 Nov 2011 15:06
coke den apparently=who is brunel?
mother123 - 7 May 2011 20:14
got to the stage now that pub is ruined by overzealous bar manager--truly too big an ego that borders on the offensive-sooooo rude!
mother123 - 13 Jan 2011 16:50
amazing to me how some people can afford this to be their 2nd or should it be 1st home! everytime i visit you see the usual red faced bloated face-quite incredible!
still a good pub but toilets far too small-havent seen any coke fends for a long while so hopefully it will stay that way--could do with more live music tho.
mother123 - 29 Dec 2010 15:26
the miserable eastern european barmaid appears to have left --pub appears to have lost its way a bit--still one of the cheapest pubs in e2 tho-needs more hot totty behind bar
mother123 - 17 Dec 2010 18:50
seen the place on fire the other day, litterally. hopefuly their wasnt too much damage and the pub can reopen!
bowhammer - 22 Aug 2010 14:23
well what can i say about this fab pub!!! i got out at the station about 10.30am and was surprised to see that not only was the pub open but about 20 people were already enjoying a pint and a good laugh. in these days when you are lucky to see a local pub if not boarded up then totally empty this was a pleasure to see. all these people (admittedly all men) seemed to know each other but i was welcomed like an old friend. sitting in what i was later told was his regular seat was an 82 years "young" proper old east end character called tommy. anything he doesnt know isnt worth knowing and i spend a couple of the most enjoyable hours ive had for many a year. the baimaid was a great laugh and obviously much loved by all. she spent half her time joining in the banter and the other half keeping everything in a very high standard of "spotless". mickey the manager was a great character, and they were all getting ready for a quiz as i was leaving(sadly i had to leave) but as i am relocating to bethnal green at the end of the month i have no doubt what so ever which pub will become my local!!!
justarrived - 6 May 2010 23:09

limehouselil - 9 Dec 2009 20:35
well what can i say-good entertainment -the best barmaids in london and the most understanding of patrons--everyone is made welcome here -good selection of beers and anything out of order is forewarned-if you want to be treated like an adult not patronised or ripped off then look no further than here-wish they put some soap in the toilets tho--best pub in bethnal green
mother123 - 30 Nov 2009 21:02
Good place to watch Sky Sports due to large screen. But can be awkward to get a good view if busy due to the poor positioning of the screen. But there is a TV at the back of the pub which is handy, especially when there's 2 games on at the same time (i.e. Champions League) on which they'll show the other match.

I thought it was quite expensive for underwhelming choice of drinks. Friendly staff though.

jmc78 - 23 Oct 2009 16:02
Great place to watch sky sports the have a big screen and I understand thay are putting a second TV so we can watch footie and the cricket
RickyMartin - 31 Jul 2009 08:54

vodkachaser - 7 Jul 2009 15:55
Fab blues night last Saturday!! (JAMIE sings the Blues!)
kungfupandapo - 29 Jun 2009 22:07
Great atmosphere, fantastic location - literally fell off the tube straight into the pub - and an amazing solo artist JAMIE played the blues on Sat 27th June. Hopefully a regular slot, well worth seeing!!
purple2511 - 29 Jun 2009 21:40
Friendly staff and great live music. Had a fun evening there - will definitely go again
fifib - 28 Jun 2009 15:15
I was in the pub saturday night 13th June and the new landlord was perfectly sober when I was talking to him at 10.30pm and what I would call one of the old landlords like we used to have in the east end - a drunken idiot did prance into the pub just before 11pm dancing about and making a fool of himself and being a nuisance to other customers - he was asked to behave himself - but when he continued upsetting the customers he was asked to leave - refusing this he was ejected without any fuss - well done that new landlord!
RickyMartin - 18 Jun 2009 08:00
I've been to this pub on a few occasions when in the area. I've seen some reviews that for me do not do the place justice at all. I've got to know the landlord who is a nice guy. The bar staff are also very friendly. The pub also has new management of a weekend now and the criticism of the DJ is probably over top as well. Sometimes he needs a push in the right direction, as he seems to think 70's and 80's soul is all that is out there. Just hand him a list of tunes and there's not much he doesn't have. Get yourself down there and see for yourself. Myself, a couple of mates and our girlfriends have never had a problem with the place.
dutchmaster - 17 Jun 2009 22:19
I was in the pub saturday had a great time - there is a new chap just joined the team. He is a very nice guy with some new ideas and new bands coming soon. I am going back next week end the place will be rocking because of the lark in the park next weekend. This is an ideal watering if you are travelling via Betnal Green Tube it is just outside the station
pwoporto - 17 Jun 2009 11:55
Hey there drinkers !!! I was mortified to see the comment about this pub for the 13th june as i was there with a dozen or so of my friends an we had a whale of a time!!! But this sounds like sour grapes as the pub got rid of some dead wood recently (staff wise) so this seems as though someone is being a tad bitter!!!! but the salmon and ball is a good busy pub an always will be!!!!! check it out for yourselves! you won,t be dissappointed, seriously..
clarance - 16 Jun 2009 20:02
well, what a difference a month makes. I was in here on a saturday about five weeks ago and the place was rocking , there was a fantastic covers band bangin' out some quality old school rock songs , there must have been at least 120 people having a great time and the atmosphere was electric . what on earth has happened ? i came in here on saturday gone (13th june) and was amazed to find the place deserted - no band , no people, no dj ,well there was a guy playing some godawful whitney houston tune (amongst some other shite ) i've never seen such a dramatic change in a pub in my life - who's the drunken new landlord , he looked like he was about to explode as he was ejecting a small bald man from the premises who incidentally was one of only five other people in the entire pub . it's madness - bring back the old guard and there might be a chance of saving this wretched hellhole of a pub . all wasn't lost as i ended the night in the star of bethnal green.what a crying shame about the salmon & ball 'cos for a year or so it has been a great little music house . bollocks !!!
bobflood23 - 16 Jun 2009 16:55
had a great night at the salmon last friday. a pub not 2 miss. the dj will play anything you ask, a great selection, {unlike the 80,s throw back they used to have, who,d only play what he liked? } great meeting place, highly recomend it, thank you
clarance - 9 Jun 2009 11:46
i know this pub is right on top of the tube station , but do yourselves a favour - don't bother . walk down to the misty moon instead - seriously !
zodiacstarchild - 12 May 2009 14:37
Free house. It seems this place presents a different face on different days/times so I will be scrutinising it further as and when in the area and may check out the Saturday music when on in May 2009... noted they have Websters Green Label on draught (can't recall if tap or hand pump but would assume it is the former - Webster's has been John Smith's owned for some years). Had the omnipresent large video screen with footie on but not unduly overbearing.
Fall out of Bethnal Green tube straight into this place (or vice versa perhaps?)
_grobag_ - 19 Apr 2009 13:15
I would like to say hello to people I used to work with(It's been 2 years since I'm gone) Amazing place highly recommended

Pleasant enough but no real ale. Convenient meeting point for tube is about the best I can say really.

I was in here Saturday night.Great pub.
The young Aussie Barmaaid was superb, friendly amd good at her job.She had a an amusing chat with me mates mrs about her braces.
Guinness was good, and not to silly on the pocket.
All in all a good local pub
tottenhamsean - 25 Oct 2007 09:46
Went in for a safety beer en route to the West End after standing in the heat watching the 2007 London Marathon.
Very smoky, and nothing to really make it stand out. Bar staff friendly enough and beer OK.

hbarteska - 6 Jan 2007 14:16
great pub, superb location, dont be scared to go in... most of the guys in there are just normal east enders, lov a chat or mind there own business, ive neva had trouble there
anonymous - 22 Dec 2006 00:22
When I was a teenager, this pub was opposite another and one, I forget which, was meant to belong to the ICF while the other was National Front. That pub is now an estate agents; I think this pub has mellowed since those days (15 years ago!) but still wouldn't feel totally happy about getting p*ssed in there.
bethm - 21 Sep 2006 18:14
Nothing wrong with this pub. Spent a Sunday evening here with a couple of mates and it was grand. Beer ok. Clientelle was rough, but no-one bothered us.
keep_it_green - 24 May 2006 16:11
Oi oi saveloy! Geezers abound. Very dirty, grotty and dsngerous pub.

Avoid at all costs.
anonymous - 10 Apr 2006 15:29
Excellent pub when Bobby moore owned it, (then mooro's) and back to it's original name when he sold it, Mind you quite a few footballers owned pubs back in the 70 and 80s. Rammo weekends.
moncrief - 12 Jan 2006 02:37
Good location and handy for a drink if wanting to avoid walking too far from the tube station. beer wasn't flat, but not an amazing pub. Although still managed to have no memroy of leaving, and left my work bag there!.... Damn it!!
anonymous - 25 Nov 2005 10:01
its a good place to wait for someone outside of the pub (thats what i see all the time!)
reckless - 11 Nov 2005 00:32
Not the place it was and the beer needs a little more looking after.
Martin_adamski - 2 Sep 2005 23:55
Another one of those 'passing through' pubs that only stays open because it's close enough to the tube that people will wait for their mates there. Not welcoming at all, bar staff are rude, full of loud geezers, tables are stickier than a post-it note, and the beer was flat.

Try somewhere else, really!
beach03 - 13 Apr 2005 17:25
geezer!
tombs - 16 Mar 2005 13:49
A pretty decent pub. Good beer, decent patrons and right outside Bethanl Green Tube
