My husband and I were passing by and popped in for a spot of lunch. Vile service. The land lord only spoke to us, despite the place being close to empty, to rudely and abruptly tell me to drink my bottled drink from a glass. He then shoved a rather dirty glass at me.
I have no idea why we decided to stay for lunch after this incident but we did. The land lady then berated us for not booking although the place was empty. She repeatedly tutted and shook her head at us as we ordered. When the food eventually arrived it was neither good or bad. It was edible and that's probably the only way to describe it.
The pub had a generally hostile atmosphere and I would suggest people avoid it unless they happen to be a well known regular. New custom is clearly not valued and it would seem, actively discouraged.

If you are wondering about visiting this pub and have come to this site for advice, DO NOT listen to the few bad comments put on the page. Myself and many others declare this a fine little pub. With a very nice landlord and landlady. The food is excellent and is very clean and welcoming. All the customers are kind and friendly and the waitresses and waiters do their absolute best to help you with anything you need. 10 stars and nothing less!

Visited this pub today (Saturday 17th July) for a spot of lunch. Beer was good, Mine Host (loose term in this case) couldn't accept justified complaint about one of two dishes we ordered. Steak and Ale pie was very good, but the Plaice, Chips and Peas was possibly one of the worst I have ever been served. Batter was rock hard ("it is deep fried, you know"), "you ate the fish" (I know, it was all that was fit for eating), peas were OK, (but you have to be REALLY rubbish to screw those up), and the chips were stale, and very, very hot.
The charming waitress proffered the usual "everything all right, Sir?", and on being advised that it was not, stated her intention to advise the chef. "Mine Host" (I must avoid this erroneous term here!) appeared, took the remains of the meal away (I had made a brave attempt to consume it), and stated that he would not charge for it. The bill arrived - full charge for the fish dish included - and The Publican ("Mine Host" was clearly absent) accepted my reluctant payment, having stated that he had counted the chips remaining!!. At this, payment by me was insisted on, with my comment "You won't like the write-up". "That's out of order" was the oaf's reply.
So, out of order or not, here's the summary: Earlier comments on mediocre food are entirely justified. The Landlord has clearly forgotten one of life's essentials - don't piss of the customer if it is custom that keeps you in business. Customer satisfaction at 50% (my wife's food was quite good) is a recipe for disaster, and, in these straightened times, you need every customer you can get. (But count us out!!).

Have been an occasional visitor for 10 years and can echo all of the positive comments on this nice old pub and its friendly and welcoming landlord/lady. It has always been known for no-nonsense, good quality pub food and recent changes in the kitchen have restored this reputation after a short period when the menu did get a little pretentious and expensive. Now we're back to old favourites like liver & bacon, scampi, ham egg & chips and my absolute favourite, sausage egg beans & chips! The lasagne is also worthy of mention. Food portions are excellent and served on properly warmed plates. There is a simpler bar menu with sandwiches and basket meals. OK its Shepherd Neame (as is practically every other village pub in the area, alas) so the range of beers is rather static and you're stuck with Orangebum lager, but worth going just for the grub. Nice decked area out the back for when the sun shines, too.

I feel Anonymous' post needs addressing. I have visited the pub over a period of 15 years or so and always found it welcoming including the current Landlord. For a Shep's house the beer is good. I have never eaten there but what I have seen come out of the kitchen looks like honest pub grub. As for it being a pub for Oldies I have only just turned 50 but never had a problem.

The Landlord is an Ass, who rather than welcoming new customers seemed more intent sitting round the bar with the regulars. Rude doesn�t even describe this man.
Food is rather basic. Don�t go here if your expecting a restaurant. This is pub food at it's most mediocre !
Service was poor, food choice poor, atmosphere...POOR...
If your a local this would make a nice pub. As long as your about 50 and an alcoholic by the look of it.

Have also been to this pub many times and think its a little gem. Ok so its always going to be a bit of a "local" pub but that what provides the character. Real beer, real food and most of all real people (not necessary in that order).

I have visited this pub on many occasions and found it to be the most welcoming pub that I have ever been in. The food is amazing and the Landlord and Landlady are wonderful
I would recommend to anyone

Visited on xmas eve, I found the Landlord and Landlady most charming, a gentleman if ever I met one, not a Cock at all. Christmas carols being sung by the customers were spoilt by a local at the bar with an outrageously loud laugh

Missed the landlord; found it a typical old Kent village pub with very good Master Brew - bit quiet.

The landlord here is possibly the rudest man in the pub trade. His customer service skills are similar to those of an angry alligator.
Beer is OK though and the pub itself not bad. Food was excellent. Will probably go back but just hope he has a day off...

Lovely pub, great food and excellent beer. As mentioned below, the guy behind the bar really is rude and abrupt - there is a picture of a horse on the sign outside so I assume he must be the cock...
