This place keeps opening and closing with monotonous regularity ! Currently up for sale / to let. It does appear to be open at the moment, but never when I expect it to be, so haven't tried it out to see what beers are now served

It’s a Joules pub, Jim – but not as we know it ! The sort of place where a bloke stops in the middle of his game of pool, and starts dancing drunkenly to the very loud music playing on the jukebox ! Meanwhile, the TV is showing some obscure football match that nobody is watching. AS mentioned the beer is from Joules, either 2 or 3 of their limited range. I tried the Slumbering Monk. My friend (a local CAMRA guy) raved about how good it was, but it was way too cold for my liking

I had 40 minutes whilst changing trains in Crewe. I walked in and out of the very quiet Corner Bar, which has seemingly gone downhill. Only a Greene King ale was on. I continued to the British Lion and was surprised to see that this is now a Joules pub. It's unlike any other Joules pub I have visited, with a much more down at heel feel. The jukebox was on very loud and Dutch football was on the TV. It had an edgy feel. Slumbering Monk, Blonde & Old No. 6 were the 3 ales on. I had the latter, which served a purpose before I had to leave to catch my next train.

Called in yesterday for a quick one before my train - they had Joules Blonde (which was OK if not brilliant) and Slumbering Monk with a third handpump not in use. I would call again if I did not have enough time between trains to make it to the Borough Arms or Hops and back.

In here Saturday evening and a few others present.
This place is a bit basic with a pool table and loud music was playing.
3 hand pulls but 1 was blank.
The other 2 had Joules beers Blond and Slumbering Monk.
I had a pint of the later which was ok but not brilliant for £2.90.

What a disaster! I arrived for a regular Sunday evening pint, last week, and found it firmly locked and bolted. Crewe cannot afford to be without a characterful boozer like this. Yes, the ambience had changed a bit with witless bar staff who know nothing about real ale, but the regulars were all there, and the beer was well kept. How long must we suffer this closure?
vicarofdarton - 12 Aug 2012 10:02
not open at present

The long serving Landlord and Landlady left this pub. It is now being run by temprorary management, many locals complain thet the character of the pub has been changed, it has lost its uniqueness. The ales are hit and miss, mostly hit, obviously the Tetleys is not as good as it used to be because Tetley Brewery closed in Leeds. THIS PUB IS NOW FOR SALE, the asking price is a little too much, but we all hope a buyer can be found and keep this great pub going. Up to 5 ales are on, and there are price offers (see chalkboard outside)

In before Col U FA Cup game - 5 ales on, had Tetley's Cask - it was good.
kernott1 - 13 Nov 2011 12:26
The main attraction here is the quality of the beer, which is always excellent. It has always been Tetleys Bitter and Mild (rare these days), plus a guest. [ May change when the Tetleys Brewery closes ] Although the staff and clientele are friendly enough, it is rather cliquey. You get the feeling that, if you arent a regular, you dont really belong here. Pub is very keen on bar games. On my last visit darts and dominoes League Matches were taking place. You may be banished to the back bar if you are not taking part in these ! Football is shown on the TV, but reception is less than wonderful !

6/10 not quite my colour

Good old fashioned alehouse not so far from the station. Had a pint of some Darwin ale which was very nice to quaff in front of the open fire. Your best bet for a decent pint in the proximity of the station.

Similar to RPADam a couple of years ago, we popped in here whilst waiting for a train at Crewe. This is a traditional single bar pub with 3 cask ales - Tetleys Bitter & Mild and Hawkshead Red were those available on yesterday's visit. The interior is a bit basic. But is all the better for it. I'm not sure how many other decent options there are close to the station. So I may find myself back here one day soon.

Simply-furnished pub, with a friendly landlady and a decent pint of cask Tetleys. Good place to stop if changing trains at Crewe station (about 5 minutes walk).

real ale is always on form, you will not be disappointed.

Was in again on Friday night / Sunday lunchtime the weekend before last - the ale was on good form and the staff were friendly. Friday night was busy with locals and the place had a good atmosphere about it. A favourite place for a pit-stop when in Crewe.

It was bit like going into a private club when I first stepped into this place: everybody seemed to know each other. However, I wasnt made to feel awkward and was made welcome by the landlady. The single bar is very brightly-lit in my view, almost harshly, although that may have been because there were darts and dominoes games in full swing that required good lighting.

The beer range was small (Tetley Bitter & Mild + guest) but in good nick. Other pubs and bars on the same road were almost empty on Tuesday night, lending an air of desperation to them, but the subject pub was heaving with people of all (legal drinking) ages, so they are getting the mix right.

Would agree with previous comments about this place - I popped in for a quick pint last week when I had a bit of a wait for my train. The Tetley's was on good form, the lady behind the bar was pleasant and, as touched on in previous comments, you feel welcome even though it is a locals' pub. Definitely worth the walk from the station
MINTYBOOM - 3 Jun 2007 01:26
nice pint, only pub except maybe the cornerbar worth a visit if you've got a long time to wait for a train. friendly for what is essentially a 'locals' pub.
hbee - 31 May 2007 11:55
Like the Crown in the town centre, a good honest pub with no frills, and good beer.
twatface - 18 Mar 2007 15:31
Excellent, if you're going to Crewe Alexandra for an Away game, make sure you avoid The Bank and come here.
chris_htafc - 12 Dec 2006 15:46
Great pub, really friendly atmosphere. They always have at least one real ale which is different every week.
Kazzie - 11 Sep 2006 22:03
Just 5 minute walk from Crewe station. If you're making a connection this pub is a nice change from the horrible pub in Crewe station.

Just head out of the station and turn left. Walk for a 3-4 minutes and you bump into it.
mrfalafel - 5 Mar 2006 16:51
The only real pub along Nantwich Road and about the only one where you actually feel comfortable having a drink, not a nice area. Decent pint and friendly.
JAYFOX2 - 28 Feb 2006 22:45
Oasis in the desert of decent pubs along Nantwich Road.

Only pub for miles to sell real dark mild (Tetley. Good selection of real ale. If you are stuck at Crewe station waiting for a connection, then try here.
