please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Quite similar to the Flyer and the Victoria really. A good enough pub, with a consistent pint whenever I've been there. Nothing to complain about and certainly nothing to stop you going again, but also very little to make you desperately keen to get back for another visit.

Greene King. From memory about £3.70 for pint of IPA. Asked if I wanted jug or tall glass. Quality pretty good.
Pretty spacious, whilst going for the food market also a place where you can just drink rather than eat and not feel the odd one out.
Quiet music was playing in the background, a couple of TVs in the corners (one BBC News 24, the other on Sky news).
southlondonbeero - 9 Nov 2016 14:52
Recently refurbished, quite an airy feel to it and a couple of good beers. In competition with the Victoria opposite (which may be driving Young's need to refurbish that pub in turn). Certainly much improved over what it was before.

nice friendly staff, good location.
Food excellent but at a price, Sunday Quiz is busy!
Accepts kids in early evenings/weekends, overall a good option

Seems to be more gastro pub than casual boozer. Service was very good although they can be a little too keen to get you a table and add service to bringing the drinks over. That aside it was a nice pleasant place with 2 or 3 ales on draught. Food was very good. Lighting is very dim and trendy though, not a pub for reading the paper. :)

I had a lovely experience in here last night. The food was excellent and the staff were v helpful & friendly. Ten out of ten!
brionyot - 16 Dec 2011 11:56
The pub had changed so much! But now it got an award as best gastro pub and restaurant for 2011 (time and leisure) and really good reviews. Amazing monday night live music and jam session, burger nights on tuesday, steak on thursday, traditional home-made sunday roast, many events, special menu's. Friendly staff, decent prices (most of the time). And good selection of real ales.
Try it out, that's my advice!

Greene King pub focusing on food - a stale barn with hard surfaces reverberating with noise. IPA, Abbot and Old Speckled Hen on the pump clips but none of these are what they were in their heyday.
SimonM - 29 Dec 2010 15:35
It now only has 2 fighting lagers on tap. Will not be getting my business which such good competition locally. 0/10 for effort.
Ionkontrol - 24 Nov 2010 17:43
its not a pub any more trying to be a restaurant what a shame
puta - 14 Oct 2010 14:53
Name change now The Duke of York...the outside has been painted black and the bar inside moved...however it now looks dark inside and only serves Green King beers. So it was even more surprising to find it only had Abbot on at 7pm on the First Friday after reverb....bad start.

The Elm Tree is a great pub, good atmosphere and friendly staff!
I'm the bass player and MD in Annie-Grace and The Mosos. We are playing here on the 25th July. Get down. Will be an awesome night.

DannyJGrant - 21 Jun 2009 15:52
Annie-Grace & The Mosos were on last Saturday ....superb! I think that she turned up and did a number at Monday's Jam Pact too. She is great
smudgerclub - 28 Apr 2009 15:52
Been along on a monday night 4 times now and the Jam session run by Jam-pact is superb! Starts at 9pm, Great Musicians of all types, rock, blues. Pub is Just 2mins for Surbition station in Victoria road.
Zebra09 - 31 Mar 2009 10:23

tolworthboy - 14 Aug 2008 15:26
Greene King IPA, Abbot and Hen. Had some good chat with the locals in a brief visit.
GuideDogSaint - 1 Jun 2008 21:44
It sounds as 'tho it needed a refurb but how do these companies manage to spend so much money and design an interior that seems so sterile...nothing you can say is actually wrong but..then you can say that of so many refurbs...the beer wasn't too good either so for a brewery owned pub...could do better....BQ 2
Insearchofthebestpint - 7 Apr 2008 15:23
Much improved since the refurb - you can go in here now without feeling you're going to be in a punch up.
hotrods - 16 Mar 2008 08:41
A modern red brick pub in the centre of the high street. A Greene King pub recently refurbished but I can't comment on the changes since it is my first visit. Large central area with bare floorboards near bar. There are 2 raised areas with more comfortable seating. There is a pool table at the rear and large screen televisions around the bar. Layout reminiscent of Wetherspoon's pubs. 4 cask ales all from the Green King stable, a very pleasant Alfresco and Old Speckled Hen. Worth a visit but I wouldn't make it my regular pub.
boozers_knows - 3 Aug 2007 13:09
This place looks so much better since the refurb. Others must think so too. The 2 times I have been there the place has been packed.
sjf88 - 1 Mar 2007 16:41
its undergoing a REFURB and reopens arount the 14th feb i think
the_one_eye_spy - 3 Feb 2007 20:55
There's been a 'Pub To Let' sign outside for a while and noticed yesterday it's closed down now, sign gone and empty inside.

Hopefully someone will do it justice.
thegavster - 27 Jan 2007 15:51
I'm sorry but The Saucy Kettle or any pub for that matter is better than here. Beers are nothing to write home about.... or anything for that matter. I actually came out feeling depressed. Is that possible or is it just me. It's a shame because it is in a very good location on the high street.
lightfoot - 28 Nov 2006 23:25
very bland + generic pub which was not much better when it was a hobgoblin a few years back. seems quite popular with the students. however, there's almost no reason to go here at all unless the victoria opposite is full and you don't feel like walking anywhere.

still it's not as bad as the saucy kettle i suppose.

4/10
drshit - 14 Oct 2006 23:32
the worst pint on the high street and devoid of character will not be going back either go to the vic and sit in the garden and pay top doller for you drink or go the flyer and get a decent pint for 2.60
the_one_eye_spy - 31 Aug 2006 19:08
Nice pub, friendly staff, quick service at the bar. Great shots and cocktails but very overpriced.
aimeelondon - 5 Jun 2006 22:15
if you're looking for a pub with a nice atmosphere, lively people, friendly service. don't bother with this place. A wave a depression hoovers over the placce and you will feel utterly depressed upon leaving. Also full a creep old drunks, one of whom would not leave me alone and kept shouting football abuse at the guy i was with for some unknown reason.
fudge - 2 Jun 2006 17:07
Strange place.....loud music, poorly kept beers and rarely souless
lawrence17 - 9 May 2006 21:00
Can't quite put my finger on it, but never feel comfortable in here. Vague feeling of a threatening atmosphere.
hotrods - 30 Apr 2006 09:15
Got a fictional drug problem?! The guys here will help you overcome your addiction by throwing you out on the street for not doing anything! Fictional drug users rejoice! Never before have I been so insulted around my friends than when I have been here. This place has no soul or feeling. The barstaff are unfriendly and there is no atmosphere. If you have any fantsies about getting high in toilets without doing anything then come to this pub!
anonymous - 30 Jun 2005 09:57
terrible pub with slow service, no atmosphere and very few drinkers. The blind eye that is clearly given to the goings on amongst 'regulars' is probably related to the lack of customers midweek. Given a straight choice between here and the weatherspoons, my buck is going up the road.
anonymous - 30 Jun 2005 09:49
fed up with the bog standard wooden chairs and centre bar. lifeless bar staff, have had better in there not so long ago, food is a joke barely eatable, except for the chips. . . v good. 10 deposit for cues is mad. manager needs to liven things up a bit. maybe theme nights, or cheaper drinks for regulars.
gemma - 24 Jan 2004 15:48
no atmosphere, terrible music. What more can you say?
jim - 15 Dec 2003 22:50
what is it with surbiton and dull places??? you've got it- quality is an unknown word here- dirty, lond wait to be served, did show the rugby though. But still- not my kind of place.
goblin - 4 Dec 2003 20:43
Please go there and enjoy your evening. This will be easy if: you have no soul (or want to loose the one you've got); wish to loose the will to live; have a penchant for flourescent lighting, enjoy finding things to complain about etc. etc. You get the drift? Alternatively, on a quite night when there are only a few punters in, a fun game can be had by sending one person into the Hogshead and one into the Victoria over the road. The winner is he/she who gets served first. Competition can be spoilt if you also fancy sending someone to Glasgo. They will get there before you get a round in at either pub, and it will have cost them less to do so.

Balsa-wood Soul-less High St drinking hole.
Either feel like you are drinking in Woolworths window or in its stock room.
Horribly over lit (induces headaches ) and i wouldnt expect a "community feel" from this place
hoonose - 5 Aug 2003 12:49
Dull dull dull dull!!

As for the 7.95 for two meals deal that they have going at the moment, why me and the missus were appalled to find that the fare that was offered was a derisory choice between an Iceland 1/4 pounder or a chicken/cat wrap with bland (dull!) chilli sauce...

Tsk - must try harder - D+
DaveyBoy - 5 Aug 2003 12:46
nive enough pub - i've found it quite lively.
pool table - bit cramped. they charge you 5 (each) deposit for the cues!
can be a bit awkward getting a 10 off the next player - they generally think your taking them for a ride.

jim - 23 Apr 2003 14:38
It is OK, fairly bog standard Hogshead. People are nice and friendly. Beer is fine.
Mike - 24 Mar 2003 17:36
Not bad, but pretty lifeless. Typical chain pub! The pool table is a good idea, but not much chance of getting on it!
Ilsa - 24 Mar 2003 16:20
Decent pub. Hoegaarden on tap plus decent selection of soft drinks for the drivers. Also, now has the added bonus of a pool table.
Angus - 19 Mar 2003 17:45
