Is it still open?Seems to be in a constant state of darkness every time I go past

I'm not a regular of this pub but have been here a couple of times. I saw an excellent live band the first time I was there and the atmosphere of the place seemed warm and friendly.

However, I would criticise the fact that they are not very good at banning trouble makers. The second time I went in the pub, it was on a date and a dishevelled guy latched onto us and scrounged drinks off of us all evening and behaved really obnoxiously towards my date. He spilt her drink over the table and then asked her to buy him drinks - the bar staff did nothing. I was told they had barred him but 'couldn't do anything to make sure he stayed barred as he walked out of one entrance and then back in the other one'. They have no security at weekends. I feel this sort of attitude could eventually lead to violent confrontations within the premises. He eventually left when I made it clear he was an annoyance.

All in all I was a little dissappointed. I'd say go there if you are out with mates but avoid it if you are meeting someone for a one to one date. Improvements are needed.

This pub has changed so much in the last nine months. It used to be a bit of a smelly dive where the chairs stuck to the carpet. The new owners have redecorated internally, replaced the kitchen and refurbished the restaurant. The staff have always been good but now they have the pub they deserve. Food is from Mark Killick who used to be the chef at the Jack & Jenny, Dukane Arms, The Bull at Great Totham and White Hart at West Bergholt - so the quality is amazing and it is very reasonably priced. Highly recommended. This is now the place to go to eat and drink in Witham.

A welcome change from anonymous London pubs. While in town for the day for an event, we were looking for somewhere to watch Heineken Cup rugby & this pub was recommended by the Red Lion (who did not have Sky). Not only did the bar staff happily switch the channel to accommodate our request, but the locals also made a space for us in front of the big screen, and watched our belongings while we enjoyed the match.
Very friendly, a decent pint, and the restaurant filled up as Saturday evening wore on so the food is probably good too!

Wow how times change!! The only place in town that you are GUARANTEED a fight on a Friday and Saturday night. Guys come in at lunchtime on Saturday to watch the football, most of them look like they are still in school and come half 8 -9pm they want to fight the world!! As for the food, used to be excellent with a permanently packed restaurant but haven't seen a single person in there for about a year. Toilets reek and make the whole bottom bar smell. Landlord is a great guy but even he knows he's fighting a losing battle and is trying to sell up. Only problem is - no takers!!

This is one of the most friendly pubs in Witham, a pleasure to drink in even alone for lunch. Sarnies are huge, fresh and served quickly.

Great pub in town centre - good real ales, excellent food, a couple of tellys including a big screen. Possibly best pub in Witham town.
