New Town Tavern, Pink Panther, Blue Boar....whatever this pub is called these days! Gave it a go again last week but the atmosphere and ambiance remains just the same. Its still a tired old street pub, located in the heart of our community and it continues to attract the same type of clientle. Clientle that prevents it becoming a pub for the local community to feel welcome in.

Been in here a few times and like the place. Landlord is friendly (and a Colchester fan), the service is good and the beer are well kept. Tend to be 2-4 ales on, usually from localish breweries Adnams, Wolf and Woodfordes. It's smartly decorated and clean and pleasant place for a good pint. The pub is also frequented by the excellent local ska band New Town Kings.

Several months after changing it's name, The New Town Tavern is still a work in progress - but progress there definitely is. The Landlord feely admits that he is still not selling enough real ales and consequently 2 of the 5 handpumps were not in use. However the 3 that were in use were dispensing excellent ales at very reasonable prices - from just 2 per pint! I think this is a pub that will get better and better as more real ale drinkers discover it - unfortunately that will probably mean the prices going up but for the time being the beer is excellent value. Recommended.

Thought I would give it a go now its reopened and changed hands. Not worth bothering! Same old tired out pub with some very shady characters frequenting it again. I Won't say what I really think about it because I'm conscious of the site's review policy, but the landlord does need to get a grip before it reverts to form.

Tried this on the opening day. The Broadside was acceptable, but too cold, but apparently the chiller has been addressed. It was tidy - seems some of the original Blue Boar locals are coming back quickly though. Good luck to the new landlord - let's hope the pub doesn't turn back in to 'Fight Club'.

New Town Tavern opened earlier tonight (Fri 03 July) . A nice makeover back to a traditional back street local. It is quite a large pub with a nice outside drinking/smoking area. Five hand pumps with Adnams Bitter, Broadside, Explorer, Woodfordes Wherry and Wolf Golden Jackal in the guest spot tonight. A very reasonably priced Golden Jackal for 2.20, Bitter and Wherry at 2.50 Explorer 2.80 and Broadside at 3.00. I did not clock all the fizz but noticed Bitberger, Spindrift and Aspalls. Mike has done a good job here to a pub that we thought may never open again. I know Adnams have helped Mike hence the three hand pumps given over to their beers.

Signs are now up showing 'The New Town Tavern'. Good to see the Blue Boar lives on in the New Town Taverns insignia. Five hand pumps are in place although I would not expect all to be in use at the start. Hopefully not to long now until it opens.

Rumours are that this is to re-open as the New Town Tavern, an ale pub run by the former landlord of Ward 9 (Hospital Arms).

Finally closing down at the end of August. To be honest it has been on the skids for a few years now but the current landlords tried to turn it into a gay bar for builders....not helped matters.

has been taken over by the guy that ran the artilleryman into the ground. has changed the name to the pink panther but he will soon ruin another pub in colchester what a pity

This pub is not my personal cup of tea. It does not serve real ale, there have been episodes of anti social behaviour in there in the past.
