Now a private property, still called Chequers.

Sad to see this pub go but the owners messed around with trying to sell it like it was part of the royal household and not just a pleasant village pub and eatery. i liked the place but the locals talked it up like it was a klondyke, run away success story which it obviously wasn't or it wouldn't have been sold. Nevertheless, a great old pub and a shame the food was good, great business on weekends esp. Sunday lunch and the ale was top notch mostly. A pleasant way to run out a dead & rainy Sunday or quality place when the sun shines.

Heard this pub is closing this week. Say it isn't so?

Arrived here at 2.05pm today after a 5 mile hike with the dog, we were starving, we were advised by another customer that the kitchen closed at 2.00pm. After enquiring at the bar they said the kitchen was indeed closed but they could cook scampi and chips if that was ok and we gratefully accepted. The food was very well presented and large portions. Staff were very friendly and helpful, would recommend this to our friends.

This is at throughly nice village pub. It's comfortable; it's got a good selection of decent beer (Maldon Gold, Pride, something called Red Hop Lover and a couple of others the other night, plus draught cider); the food looks OK and it wasn't overly crowded.

What's not to like? The only problem I have is that it's a drive...

The pub will greatly benefit from the smoking ban which is why I stopped visiting 7 years ago. Too much smoke in the childrens room.
A great locals pub. They always made me feel welcome and I'm still friendly with a lot of them now.
Beer ok.

Chequers is a great country village pub with a nice selection of local ales.

Also has excellent home cooked food.

Typical slightly old-fashioned but immaculate Essex estuary pub, but as mentioned beer (Maldon Gold) only average. Still worth a visit and a nice village to walk from.

A much more welcoming pub than its neighbour, The Anchor. The Landlord/Landlady do an excellent job of making you feel welcome, good range of real ales with the odd local one thrown in. The food is very good, excellent service and great value. Nice traditional open fire in the winter.

Only minor gripes would be the occasional dirty lipstick stained glass (get a new dishwasher!!) and they could do with cleaning the ale pumps out a bit more regular, I have had an slightly 'eggy' pint on more than one occasion. However when this has happened I have had no trouble exchanging for another pint of my choice.
