user reviews of the Anchor Inn (Hungry Horse), Hitchin

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Pub has settled down and regular customers are in evidence particularly diners at weekends and lunch times. Good food and beer, normally one choice of real ale only but landlord tells me he is getting another line put in shortly.
Customers are a bit thin on the ground during the week, but that is true everywhere now unfortunately.

This pub is no longer a Hungry Horse, but under the new landlord ( since early Summer 2010) it serves excellent food at reasonable prices up to about 10 pm.
The landlord has also weeded out most of the undesirables which used to make the air blue.

After over a year of avoiding this pub like the plague, I have recently heard good things about it via word of mouth after new people have taken it over esp concerning the food.
Well I can happily report that after paying the Anchor a visit and sampling the delights on offer, I am more than happy to recommend the food to all, We ordered a half chicken roast at 7.50 ea and oh my god did we get a whopping dish of freshly cooked fare which tasted delicious and more than satisfied our needs.
Ok you may have to have a longer than average wait for food but please remember this is freshly cooked food and not the microwaved rubbish that is served in chain pubs.
Will defo go back and recommend to others.
What a difference a year makes.

As a pub lover, but unfortunate enough to actually live near this particular establishment, it is currently closed and will hopefully remain so.

Sometimes it is not actually the pub that is the fault, or even its location. In this instance it is the particular clientle that perspective managers/brewery do not seem to be able (or want to) get away from, which is a great shame.

It's currently closed but has a sign outside saying that it's under new management and will be re-opening soon.

Let's hope they clean it up and turn it into a great local.

Not a nice pub. Smells of dirty dish cloths. The staff are all rough and that just the women. Had a horrible drink in a dirty glass. The customer all said the word c*** in unison. Shame on you Anchor. get a cleaner. Nice pub over the road though.

Not really a good place to go if you like real ale/continental lagers - this pub has more of the usual beers like Carling etc.

Staff were friendly enough but the customers were a bit foul-mouthed.

It looks like they may have had a drug-dealing problem as there are posters up warning that dealers will be prosecuted (although there was no sign of it going on whilst we were there).

Seems like the landlord/lady are trying to make an effort with the pub though so good on them.

as again i have seen another comment ade by the pieeater, you know I have just made a comment on the millstream, I visited the anchor aswell today for a quick drink, no yobs, just a another nice pub, realy nice guy behind the bar. I have not had anything to eat in this pub yet, but I will, just to prove a point to others that look at this site. Hitchin does have a load of nice pubs, dispite what pieeater says!

No longer a Hungry Horse, has become an independent. And how!!! When I lived up the road a few years ago it was the regular Friday night place for me and my drinking mates and it was a lively place full of people having a great night out. Now gone really scruffy, and full of screens, fruit machines and yobs, with not a sniff of any decent ale. I never intend to go anywhere near the place again

A worrying lack of food safety knowledge here. When I complained that my steak was stone cold they offered to heat it up again for me with no thought for whether or not this was wise (given that it had been sat on my plate congealing for 25 minutes and had evidently been sat out getting cold for some time before that!)

We waited and waited because we foolishly thought that someone would do a satisfaction check, but instead my husband had finished eating long before anyone came into view.

So, in conclusion, the food was crap, the service worse, and the food safety issues quite alarming.

Bon appetit!

Not a particulary great pub this, very crowded especially in the evening.
