Perfectly OK traditional village local on a noisy main road. Extra point for serving us at 3.20 when they had apparently closed at 3. Five ales from the Palmers range, I tried the Copper Ale for the first time at £3.30 which was fine for one but I am not the biggest fan of Palmers (sorry Ian Mapp!) as they always seem to lack a little life. If I was holidaying very nearby then I would probably return.

Another Palmers House. This is a good thing. Much bigger on the inside than you would expect, with front bar, restaurant area and then TV room at the back. They were catering for everyone on a Saturday night. Bar Drinkers, Diners and the England Rugby. Food was excellent value and beer superb. Seemed to be a lot of activities on. A proper village pub.

We always use this establishment each time we stay in Chideock and have never found anything but a friendly welcome. This is a very popular place to eat and each Palmers ale is well kept. Would thoroughly recommend it to anyone. Steve, Emma and the staff deserve all the plaudits for all the work they do to maintain such high standards.

Made two visits in a week while staying in the area and enjoyed it both times. Four Palmers ales on tap, Best Bitter, 200, Copper Ale and Dorset Gold all of which were in decent form. The menu is mainly based around the specials board and offers a decent variety of dishes including local seafood and more meaty offerings. Would highly recommend a Chideock Egg as a starter (scotch egg made with chorizo, delicious) and the fish and chips was excellent (although they are fries, not chips) with a generous sized piece of fish and nice crispy batter. The staff were helpful and friendly and they also allow dogs in, which is nice.

Sorry anne and sally i have to disagree. Yes the pub is under new management but the menu is very limited now and the pub has only declined over the last 3 yrs since paul and tracy where there. We visit chideock 3 times a year every year and tried this week knowing there where new managers. Still grunted at on arrival, still made to feel " we only want your money " with no friendly chat at all. Drinks are on average 1 per pint dearer than another establishment in the village and we ate at that same establishment twice for less than our single meal cost here. Same music at the pub as it was 6-7 yrs ago and repeated every wednesday and some saturdays. Time for a change of tactic needed but being a tied pub it probably cant compete with the other pub on the main road. Prices are facts the rest is just our opinion sorry.

Although we live locally we had never been to this pub before Steve and Emma took over earlier this year, so can't compare to how it was previously. Our experience there has been fantastic - a super sun-trap beer garden, and such a fantastic lunch (half pint of prawns with home made mayonnaise and a superb sausage sandwich) that we went back with mum-in-law for her birthday treat. Good choice of food, including for children, sensible prices for food, and I had a lovely leek and mushroom gratin which beats any vegetarian option I've sampled before. Looking forward to going back soon for the Thursday night pizza cooked outside in a wood-fired oven.

This pub provides a classic example of how to ruin a decent local.
We first visited the George about five years ago when it was in the hands of the old owners. It was busy, noisy (no jukebox, just people having a good time); the beer was excellent and the food outstandingly good value. I remember paying about 6 for a huge cod and chips. The front room (public bar) had a roaring log fire as did the saloon. There were pub tables, comfy chairs and the sort of atmosphere you'd expect in a busy popular local. There was also good live music played to an appreciative audience.
Then the pub was sold on and over the years we've been back to Chideock we've seen a slow and steady decline. There's a massive mobile home holiday park down the road and the new owners apparently made the business decision to screw the local trade and provide an eating establishment for trippers who won't come back anyway. It's a pity - the pub is in the centre of the village and could provide - and has in the past provided - a social heart to the village.
So the comfy chairs in the saloon were ripped out and replaced with Little Chef-style dining banquets. There's now nowhere to sit and just have a pint unless you go in the public bar. Despite this, food is not the George's strong point. If you want to eat, my advice is to choose wisely from the over-priced menu (last night we went for simple steaks - 19 for a ribeye!), because in our experience (we've visited the George several times over the years) the kitchen is likely to get it wrong with anything more complicated. Just last night we watched a couple complain to the waitress and then walk out because they didn't like what they had been given.
On the plus side, the staff are friendly and welcoming (and apologetic to unhappy customers!). And the beer (I had Palmers Best) was well kept.
But on leaving we had one last look through the front window and what an unhappy sight - a deserted pub on a Saturday night with no fire in the front room (and on the coldest night of the year). Sorry to sound so harsh, but hopefully the landlord of this potential goldmine - lovely building, well situated and with a captive clientle - will one day see sense and turn the clock back to what this pub once was. Not holding my breath though.

Hmmm, Grunted at on arrival, very overpriced for size of portions. Got the impression that if you were not spending 30 per head or more on food then they werent really interested. Zero atmosphere and Hospitality. Sorry not for us.

The A35 bang outsie makes access and egrss to and from very difficult, this puts me off venturing in more than I do. A solid pub if uninspiring, a bit tooo easy to find in summer so it is often full of other tourists ! I tend to frequent the out of the way pubs in darkest Darzet.

Arrived shortly before closing on sunny spring Sunday. Made very welcome and even invited to have 2nd pint...and to make sure we did not miss the bus the landlady said she collect the glasses from outside later. Shame the Palmers Copper was not perfect

At first glance the extensive menu seems to be extortionately priced but the food is very good. I had two huge Barnsley chops which I would recommend. The pub is definitely food orientated although the front bar is mainly for drinkers. Three Palmers ales were in excellent form. The landlady efficiently runs the bar, does the food ordering and still finds time for a chat.

Well kept beers, good (but not cheap) food. One of the barmen does the brewery tours in Bridport.

Generally all-round good.
Decent food and drink, would recommend.

Nice pub with with a touch of the quaint. Good restaurant, though the food can be a touch 'poncey'. Beer's very acceptable - serves Palmer's, though not Tally-Ho (not on my visit anyway). Pretty roomy.
