user reviews of the George, West Bay

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

very disappointing. we went in at 5:30pm and wanted to order food. we were told that they don't do food until 6:00pm. fair enough. we'd checked the menu and made our choices only to be told that they don't do that food after 6:00pm. nowhere did it say on the menu that it was unavailable. the service from the older staff was pretty indifferent too.

One of if not the worst pub i have ever been in.

A total rip off and a dump to go with it.

I will never be back.

My family visited on 18/08/11 Firstly we were seated for a good 10 or more minutes before anyone came to the table to take our drinks order, when the drinks arrived l had asked for a large glass of rose wine but was brought a small white,l didn't want to make fuss so said nothing. About 30 minutes after ordering our food arrived. My sons meal did not have the side order of vegetables with it and my husbands meal was cold, after several attempts to attract the attention of a waitress to point out the problems my husbands meal was taken away, after about another 5 minutes his lamb shank was brought back minus potatoes, veg and gravy, we then pointed out again that my son still didn't have his vegetables, a few minutes later they were then brought out along with my husbands potatoes and veg, still no gravy. My husband by then had started to eat his food as it would have gone cold again, and the rest of us had almost finished. At this point we asked to speak to a member of management but were told that no one was available. As my husband finished his meal, as if to add insult to injury his gravy was brought to the table. We then asked again to see who ever was running the restaurant that night and eventually the chef came to talk to us. he said that he had not been told about the problems and he apologised and agreed that the service was not good enough and said he would take off the cost of the two meals that were unsatisfactory. He said the bill came to 125.15 (or thereabouts) so our amended bill would come to 100.15 which we paid by mastercard and left, as we had found the whole episode embarrassing. As it was late and we had children to get to bed l didn't have time to examine the bill properly, however l had a nagging feeling that the bill was higher than it should have been. When l checked it the next day adding up the food that was on one of the slips and the drinks on the other l discovered that in actual fact the bill should not have totalled 125.15 it was approx 102, then deducting the 2 meals that the chef agreed to we should have paid about 77. I later went back to the pub and asked to see the manager but yet again no one was available so l had to return later. After being kept waiting I was approached by a woman who said she was the manageress, I explained what the problem was and as we were talking she was joined by a man who turned out to be the manager who had walked past me twice whilst I was waiting and had ignored me, he was also in the bar the previous night when we were told that there was no manager available. She then handed the bill to him muttering to him that she could not verify whether l was telling the truth as there could have been more slips with the bill, even though l had tried to show her the credit card reciept proving how much we had paid. He then tried to add up the bill again but got impatient and said " l haven't got time for this, how much do you think you're owed" I told him 23 and he slapped it on the counter and turned to walk away from me. I asked could I please have my bill back and he said "no you can't you've got your money back" and walked away. Both the man and the woman were incredibly rude (she kept butting in when l was explaining the problem and at one point turned to speak to a staff member whilst I was speaking) and he never made eye contact or spoke to me apart from his surly comments about being too busy. I have never experienced such rudeness, these people should not be in hospitality. I would like to point out that the restaurant was not particularly busy that night, there were several empty tables the staff were not rushed off their feet they just didn't seem to care, hardly surprising when you see the style of management. I have been visiting West Bay for many years and have always wanted to eat in The George... what a disappointment, some of the food was ok, the service was appalling but the most worrying thing is the major discrepancy in the adding up of the bill. I would like to think that it was a genuine mistake but the cynical side of me wonders if maybe this is how complaining customers are dealt with, add a bit on so that they can appease by giving a discount. On my return home I looked up the pub on Tripadviser I was not at all surprised by what I read I only wish I had seen it before my visit.

Stopped off here for tea last week whilst staying in Charmouth with our children and in-laws, service was great and everybody was really friendly.

Food was really good too, everything seemed fresh and the lady who worked there was saying they try to keep everything as local as possible...they sell cupcakes too on the bar which both our son and daughter had, kept them occupied whilst we had a afternoon swift half! they said they were yummy!

Lunch is good too! menu is varied and a good selection of hot and cold food, the family room is ideal to just relax in. We are going to go back in the Summer, as we were pleasantly suprised.

We can not compare with the other pubs in the harbour as we have not been to them, but we would give the george 10/10!

Sally1971 - 18 Mar 2011 23:28
Returned to this pub at the weekend for the first time in two years after the ex landlord ruined our last visit.

The new owners and all the staff were everything you would expect them to be and more. Extremely courteous, attentive and the food was perfect.

The pub looks great, the atmosphere was just right and we received a very warm welcome.

Thank you everyone at The George, we will be back often.

Out with the old in with the new!!

sawsmith - 31 Jan 2011 19:49
Boosey seems to be in the pub alot does he also have a problem! Yummy and Boosey seem to be related. Pub looks great now Palamers have spent some money on it. You can't make a silk purse out of a sows ear. Disappointed to see the local drunks back in this weekend.
Ivantheterrible - 28 Nov 2010 12:09
With new management turning this place around you wouldn't believe it was the same place.
The whole pub has been refurbished and has a modern but pub like look to it, the walls are covered in gorgeous pictures and paintings of west bay and surrounding areas which brings a great sense of pride in the beautiful scenery that surrounds it.
The new managers are a delight and a huge improvement than the drunk that they replaced, we found all the staff to be helpful and considerate making sure we had everything we needed.
Whether your looking for "pub grub" or something a bit more up market this place can definitely cater for everyone. We samples the Sea Bass and The scallops with bacon, and both were delicious.
It's great to see the full potential of this pub that had seemed to have faded away over the last few years.
All round a delightful experience, and we will definitely be returning

WOULD RECOMMEND
.

We have now eaten in this pub 5 times within the last week, including lunch today! It was so nice to be able to walk into West Bay and get a decent lunch, with again a great service.

We could even take the dogs in the bar area, and these too were made to feel very welcome!

I know this is my second review this week, but we just can not believe the changes and how wonderful this pub is! We are also booking for Christmas day lunch, and the menu looks fabulous!

Bring on the summer, as West Bay this year will be thriving and this pub will be in the heart of it all, We were admiring the beer garden which still is undergoing some work, we can not wait to sit and have a nice bottle of vino by the river ;)

If your thinking about it, Go! You will not be disappointed!

HIP HIP HOORAY!
Dr_Pangloss - 18 Nov 2010 13:45
We heard that the George in West Bay was under new management so we popped down for dinner.

The place now looks amazing and the new landlords/ladies are very friendly and genuine. Very impressive menu as well.

Would recommend!!

Greenie74 - 18 Nov 2010 13:34
Agree with comment below - pub looks lovely, management and staff are very friendly. I didn't eat there on this visit, but my son had a steak and the food/service was faultless.
westybird - 15 Nov 2010 16:10
Novemebr 2010 - The George is under new management!!!

The violent drunk has left the building - Thank God :)

Have to say the new licensees are lovely. The place has been completely refurbed and renovated since Roy's departure in September and it now looks amazing.

We went there last night for the first time in over a year, following the worst meal out of our lives (see previous comment)

The new menu is varied and not pricey. We had the scallops and sausage n mash and both were very impressed.

Already this place has become our favourite in Bridport & West Bay. We are local and its very handy to have such a nice place to eat only down the road from us.

10 out of 10 and would recommend The Geroge to anyone!!!
boosey - 14 Nov 2010 11:08
Went to this pub for a meal 17/09/2010 was not impressed, very pricey for very little. Also wife had to send hers back as it was stone cold in the middle. As well as some sort of row going on in the kitchen.
dbj - 19 Sep 2010 19:40
This pub is a dump.

Full of drunk gobby idiots and rip off prices for beer.

Will not be going back.
fj54lcu - 25 Jul 2010 19:09
We decided to give this pub another try this weekend after having a bad experience. We were hoping there would be a new landlord but nope...hes still hanging on! :( Still the same...agressive and balshy and drinking behind the bar..somethings never change!
boosey - 13 Apr 2010 18:12
Oh yes another good weekend in Westbay . Back to the George again stayed in roon 6 this time, we felt very welcome again by Roy and Jackie . I would just like to say Cockleman i was there singing happy birthday on sunday what a good day cant wait for my next visit.!
poolepirate - 8 Apr 2010 20:54
went down to west bay on bank holiday weather not to good but as usual went in the george had a warm welcome, in fact it was my birthday on sunday and we had 18 people come down to visit, and at short notice we all decided to eat in the george no problem for staff they took it all in there stride and the service and food was exellent and sang happy birthday to me, the thing about this pub it is so good i don't feel the need to go any were else so i dont review any others
cockleman - 8 Apr 2010 20:20
well this place seems to really divide opinion, people who have had really bad food and service, or the people who only write about this pub with glowing comments, who accuse all the other reviewers of being sad, if you check out the people who have had a bad experience in here you will generally find they have left genuine reviews for other pubs, the glowing ones only for this one, so I'd suggest you look at all the reviews before making up your mind, I'll give it a 1/10 as it sells beer
vinnnie - 1 Apr 2010 12:18
What a wonderful pub ! Food was well cooked, very freindly staff cant wait to get back there . Glad i took no notice of those very sad comments. All best to to all at The george.
poolepirate - 31 Mar 2010 21:59
Visited 23 March, was going to order until we saw the black chips cooked in filthy oil delivered to the table next to us, the chap sent them back.

The landlord who was dressed in chefs white was behind the bar and seemed more intent on finishing his pint!!

Wish we had seen these reviews before we travelled

Believe the bad ones, it's a shame because as someone else commented it could be a great pub with different people in it.
boatlover1 - 28 Mar 2010 16:24
I see my comments have been removed, some one dosn't like the truth, just read all the other reviews for this pub before they get them removed too and ignore the ones that have plainly been contrived
vinnnie - 25 Mar 2010 12:45
Personally I think this pub is great. I only go to West Bay a couple of times a year but I can always be assured of a welcome here. Great well kept Palmers ales and the food, although not great, isn't half bad. Don't know who Vinnie is but if he doesn't like this pub then good ridance.
bigcolchelseafan - 22 Mar 2010 22:22
going down westbay this weekend can't wait to have a few pints in the george
just hope the last 2 reviewers are not in to spoil things for us still they will be
at home writing some sad comments about someone (hopefully) cockleman
cockleman - 11 Mar 2010 20:16
Thanks to ALL contributors - I shall now AVOID this pub like the plague when I visit West Bay at Easter.
anonymous - 3 Jan 2010 18:57
what a great pub the most friendly landlord & landlady i have ever had the pleasure of meeting all the staff are great we spent new years eve here one of the best we have ever had all the locals in fancy dress made us feel like one of them especially the ones dressed as wuzell & aunt sally there was a free firework display & a free buffet we just cant wait to visit this great pub again
thanks again to all that made us so welcome
cockleman - 3 Jan 2010 18:28
I was tempted to give this a try whilst in West Bay a couple of weeks ago, just to see if the guvnor was as a bad as the recent reviews had suggested, just for entertainment value, well sinse I've been home and read the last couple of reviews it seems to have got worse, I'm almost disappointed I didn't go in now, it sounds like a scream, so long as you're not eating
vinnnie - 5 Nov 2009 16:47
Went to this pub at the weekend ordered our meal and waited well over one hour for the food, when the food arrived I had steak very ropey and fatty! Complained to the waiter who offered me a refund then the landlord/chef came out...appeared to be quite merry and told us to p*ss off if we wanted our money back? I am currently in talks with Palmers Brewery regarding this man and the service we recieved, Chatting to another local last week they experienced something very similar at this pub, The guy should be in a boxing ring not in a pub!
clairelouise1980 - 27 Oct 2009 18:51
WORST PUB WE HAVE EVER BEEN TO!!!!!!

I say worst pub, but meant only in a service capacity. The pub itself is located in the beautifully picturesque harbour of West Bay in Bridport. Under the correct management this place could be in the top 10 in the entire country.

However, the landlord is a vile pig that was rude to my wife and shouted at other customers in the dining area, simply because we had the audacity to question his cold vegetables and for waiting and hour and a half for our food.

Not only this, the red faced neanderthal was more incapacitated than most of the customers. I cannot believe that someone like this is allowed to run and establishment like this and get away with it. I can only guess that his entire trade is toursists and people who would never go back there, under the current management anyway.

It was such a shame as what was a lovely day by the seaside was ruined by this drunken bigot. His snarling wife was no better and had the personality of a venomous snake.

I urge anyone contemplating visting Bridport to NOT GO TO THIS PUB. We did however, go to the Crown which is a 10 min walk afterwards and were very pleased with both the service and the food.
booseylucie - 27 Oct 2009 18:38
Messy pub full of neanderthals (the uninteresting variety). Waited 10 minutes to buy a drink, but gave up in the end and found an infinitely better pub round the corner (The Quarterdeck - not listed on here for some reason, but highly recommended).
man_versus_horse - 28 Sep 2009 17:57
The worst Chicken Tikka I have ever tasted. It tasted nothing like it. When I complained I was told abruptly "That's because it's home-made" and "I went to an Indian and they didn't even use proper meat." Two outrageous and pitiful excuses. I was not given a refund.

Three of our party had the lamb which tasted off and this shambles completely ruined my evening. I would not recommend this place to anyone. Stay away. It is a complete waste of money!
SianStatham - 26 Sep 2009 15:23
Awful food, confused staff and a chef who tried tio blame his team. The chef then agreed to refund the cost of the meal but the landlord overuled him. Fortunately my voice is louder than his and we got our money back after a very rude confrontation with the nastiest landlord I've ever come across. DO NOT EAT THERE!!!
gavlb - 24 Sep 2009 21:00
Two bar pub with a restaurant /carvery at the back, one bar is pretty much a nautical themed lounge but pleasantly pubby, while the other is a very basic public with a pool table. Beers from Palmers nearby brewery, IPA and 200 in this case but served with the sparkler on a Northern setting and suffering badly as a result. A trio of lagers from usual suspects; Stella, Fosters and Kronenburg, Guinness of course and Thatchers cider. Quite busy on a Saturday night but not overwhelming although the staff struggled a little.

oldboots - 10 Sep 2009 19:25
4 July 2009 Landlord extremely rude and bullying to family of four with week old baby. Had to ask for Police to be called - Landlord likes to taste his own beer a little too much!!!!!
charlie09 - 6 Jul 2009 15:44
I've visited this pub every year for about seventeen years, I have always felt that this is a pub where things could kick off at any minute.Quite often twenty or more motorcycles adorn the forecourt, at weekend a cruise takes place with a discreet police presence. The pub has some erm... well oiled patrons who are a tad noisy. To be frank a very swift half prior to climbing the steep hills suffices for me.
slerpy - 19 Jun 2009 22:05
Quite the rudest landlord it has ever been my misfortune to come across. On being seated at our table this evening 16th April 2009, it was a beautiful sunny evening but the sun was blinding us at our particular table. The waiter kindly closed the curtains which took away the problem. About ten minutes later the landlord came in and opened the curtains and then asked if the sun was a problem for us. On answering yes it was, he pointed directly at me and said "Dracula" in front of all the other diners. When approached and asked to apologise, all he was interested in was extolling his virtues as a successful businessman.
We will never go back again.
sawsmith - 16 Apr 2009 20:47
Just as pleasant as previous visit. It was nice to be remembered by landlady. Excellent Palmers Copper and good substantial food. Lively pub with friendly locals and tourist visitors. Keep up the good work.
southfields - 3 Mar 2009 16:55
Nothing out of the ordinary as a pub, but they trade on their location - seething with tourists in the summer apparently means that the staff don't have to take an interest in customer relations and can ponce about trying to look busy while avoiding serving customers at the bar. They also charge ridiculous prices for what are, after all, only Palmers beers - so nothing really to recommend the place.
BobOs - 9 Dec 2008 16:02
down again visiting.Booked a table for Sunday Lunch.table was available on time,Food was very GOOD.
Keep up the good work

dghs - 7 Dec 2008 11:13
Had 3 pints in The George this week end. Very good beer (as always) from Palmers. Each time they were topped up without my asking. Quick, friendly professional service on an exceptionally warm and busy October Sunday lunchtime.
southfields - 13 Oct 2008 16:19
It's OK, but that's about it. The setting is what does it. But they hike the prices up in the summer and the staff can be quite rude - and God forbid you should ask for your glass to contain a full pint! 3.10 for a pint of ale in the south west if quite rich.
beerbarber - 24 Sep 2008 20:01
Popped in with the girl for a quick pint, around 10 pm on Tuesday 24th June 2008. We joined the queue at the bar (two people in front of us) and waited. And waited... One of the chaps in front of us (not obviously thugs etc) rapped the bar with a glass in an attempt to attract service. After a couple of minutes someone appeared behind the bar, pottered about while ignoring the assembled four possible customers, then wandered off. A minute later another member of staff did the same. A third was busy clearing tables near us. None acknowledged our presence. We left having waited perhaps 5 minutes, as the staff clearly had more important things to do than serve (or acknowledge) customers, and went home. Unable to buy a drink, and therefore unable to recommend this place. Zero out of ten. Suggest the West Bay 100 yards away instead.
Sand_Dancer - 29 Jun 2008 17:32
hi, firstly this pub is nothing less than perfect for any occassion. The Staff here are lovely friendly staff and create a great relaxed atmosphere. I had my wedding reception here and it was everything we wanted and more. The owners are lovely, they went completely out of their way to make it a special day for us, we honestly couldnt ask for anymore. You can ask anyone that attended our reception how lovely the venue was and the staff, and they will all say how lovely it was.The food / buffet was perfect and very posh not any old buffet this was tops. so we really cant see why there have been bad reviews, (must have been their beer goggles and the sea air getting to them!) The staff and owners were very professional but they at the same time mingled in with guests making it special, and nothing was too much effort for them. We would recomend everyone to go to this pub as it is perfect!!!
Lisajayne84 - 26 May 2008 18:17
i recently visited after new management took over & found food ,service & staff to be very pleasant.
dghs - 29 Mar 2008 21:05
I have been to this pub/hotel many times, since the new people have taken over it has come on leaps and bounds, the beer is very good as is the food. I am really suprised at the daft comment left about the landlord being rude he's probably one of the best I have come accross in 40 years. The staff are very friendly and its well worth a visit. (Big Mick)
TheRealGuvnor - 29 Mar 2008 00:41
Hi

This pub/restaurant/hotel has been recently taken over. It has been extensively cleaned, painted and refurbed. It will offer a very warm welcome with excellent cuisine now offering a Sunday carvery. Give it a try.
JS6691 - 13 Mar 2008 14:49
Awful Service. Awful food. Awful prices.
We went here as the Riverside is closed during the Winter months, and I wish we hadn't have bothered. The drinks were ridiculously expensive and the waitress had dreadful body odour. However, the worst aspect was my meal - I ordered a "Heritage (!!!) Fish Pie" for around 15 and it arrived as just a plate of grey slop with a couple of token minuscule prawns and some pollock - not at all like a pie - not in a pie dish and not with any topping - really it looked like vomit. The side plate of vegetables were all undercooked and very hard. I sent the meal back and the owner/manager was extremely rude and said "do you know how much that costs me to make, it's not cheap, it has prawns and pollock in it." Gosh when was pollock ever expensive? He didn't offer me a refund or an alternative. Quite honestly I was glad to get out of there. I would warn people to stay away, as quite frankly this place does not deserve to take anyone's money.

JoJo35 - 7 Feb 2008 13:26
Rico166 must have gone on a bad day. Wesy Bay is a great place with some excellent establishments, this one included. A great place to try some excellent Palmers ales and sit on the benches outside watching the world go by.
By the way, the locals are not unfriedly, just West country trawlermen who have been up since some ungodly hour.
The foods not bad either.
bigcolchelseafan - 10 Sep 2007 14:52
Horribly expensive - actually more expensive than most London pubs, unfriendly staff (but that goes for pretty much everyone in this village). Not a happy experience.
rico166 - 12 May 2007 15:05
Had a couple of Palmers real ales, not too bad. We were going to eat here until we saw the menu prices.

It is being renovated with scafolding adorning the out side.
Kernow - 26 Jun 2006 19:14
Out of tourist season an unwelcome mass of neon in what was a nice public bar. The brewery seem intent on establishing the sort of identity that pubs had in the 1980s. Ho hum. Rough crowd out of season, I'm afraid. Played darts there and found it v intimidating.
