John Smith's Cask: 2.80, Theakston Best 2.90. Also Theakston XB on. Cask ales seem to be from the Heineken UK list as Deuchars IPA also features. Heineken 3.50.

Lots of negative comments here, but I found it OK though it served Duechars IPA & John Smiths on draught, both perfectly OK pints, and I thought their food was good - 2 normal pub meals for 10 on a weekday can't be bad, certainly better than the microwaved stuff out of a Wetherspoons for example, it had actually been cooked.

We went early afternoon however, so not sure what it would be like later on!

Why did we come here, my friends and I asked ourselves. Generally dirty with a stale beer odour, food was unsurprisingly awful and staff although reasonably pleasant seemed to have no idea of their job description. Best to be avoided

Went in as a large group and tried to order drinks. I was given all the wrong drinks then blamed for getting them wrong. See then swore at me. I decided to just pay for the few drinks we got and left. The member of staff was incredibly rude. Never been spoken to like this before especially by some one I was giving money to!!! When we asked some one else if we could speak to the manager we were told that the person that had been rude was the manager. AWFUL EXPERIENCE

Grim. Smells like a toilet. Feels like there's going to be a pub brawl constantly.

Not as busy as it was seven or eight years ago, when it was one of the only pubs on the north side of the river with a late license (1am on a Sunday, most other places shut at 10.30pm). Since then, it's quietened down a bit. I like it for the well catalogued juke box and being one of the few York bars to sell "Magnet". On the downside it could still do with a tidy up and perhaps some more seating instead of the big sofas which seat 3 people but take up the space of 6 !

poor atmosphere, constant backround ambience of smashing glasses, only worth going to once the Gallery Fodder have vacated (between 1 and 3 am) when it can be quite relaxed, disgusting toilets and unfriendly bouncers.

This truly is a York institution, always open and inviting when you didn't quite get your fill somewhere else, and while mainly packed with students, you could meet basically anybody in here. Does at least sell one real beer too (John Smith's Magnet, thankfully not their regular dishwater). Nice sofas too.

Late licence, thankfully. Beers and spirits are cheap during happy hour, and you can actually hear each other talk. Full of students (this may or may not be a positive thing)

Are you sure this place has a safety certificate ???

The prices in this pub are excellent and the atmosphere on a weekend second to none. Would recommend the "Slush Puppy-like" vodka flavour slushes that are made.

Two bars and a wide variety of different people make this one of the best pubs in York.

And if this wasn't enough there is a late license as well. Rather spend saturday in the Lowther than across the road at a well known chain pub and would have more fun doing so also.

Having seen a rating of 3.3 i felt compelled to even the score. As far as pubs go after closing this happens to be one of the few where you can carry on socialising instead of being deafened in one of the late night bars/clubs. The beer is cheaper than most places and there is a broad age range of people who use it. The only downside is, like the kings arms close by it is situated next to the river which likes to flood on occasions forcing us more social drinkers into mainstream clubs. Visit it and enjoy.

This pub does tend to get a pretty hard press when you speak to alot of people in York. Yes it can be very busy with students and "alternative" type people, and I understand this sometimes puts people off. However, for late license pubs in York, it is bound to be busy, and the drinks are reasonable, and it is pretty large. I would imagine even people who rate it quite poorly still go there. However, it does serve a purpose, and typically on not too busy days, it is a pleasant friendly place to drink, despite the imperfections of the settings.
