Friendly pub - got to agree with pkrp - popped in for a couple of pints of Red Mist; friendly and more pub-like (in a good way) than it looks from the outside.

Above-average Surrey pub with homely bare-brick and beams interior, extended patio-room to the rear and a garden with additional fair-weather bar. Pleasant smiley staff and a range of ales that included Red Mist brand plus a hefty range of taps including Marston's Oyster Stout and lots of pils/high-end lagers/ciders etc.
Aiming for the high-end of the income spectrum, the Duke sports four well-kept beers and that's reason enough to visit. It's not too 'foody' or 'winey', as with many Surrey pubs, plus it has a beer festival annually (Cherryfest) so there's scope for a good reputation here.
The pub is a minutes amble from the Greensand Way and the best for miles around (unless you head to Churt). Sleek, modern and a tad pricey yes but rather more informal than you might imagine. We didn't try the food (but we will)....

Rural pub located approximately 1 mile outside Tilford village.

Visited this pub one lunchtime whilst passing by. 4 real ales on tap including Ringwood Fortyniner and a couple from Hogs Back Brewery. Nice interior and well appointed patio seating which is great for the warmer months. Extensive food menu but just opted for a chicken sandwich with a side of chunky chips. The staff I found were friendly and the service good.

It's not cheap here by any means but judging how busy it was in the car park it would appear that there were plenty of people who are willing to pay that little bit more to eat and drink in pleasant surroundings. It does seem to be a popular pub and I gather it's recommended to reserve a table if you're looking to eat there in the evenings. Overall I enjoyed my visit and would recommend the Duke of Cambridge.

8/10

As part of a party of 6, I visited this pub on 21st October. We were not planning to eat, although the visit was partly to check out the food for a future occasion. For this reason, we avoided the peak Sunday lunchtime session, arriving after 2pm. All the tables were in use by diners or had "reserved" signs on them so we gathered in a tiny corner (the only available standing space) to enjoy our beer, which was in less than great condition and chosen from a range of 3 rather predictable real ales. When a nearby table was vacated, we moved to it and I checked with the waitress who was clearing it that it was, indeed, free. Once we had sat down with our (expensive) drinks, we were immediately asked to move, as the table was "booked" - I asked (politely) how this was possible, as the management could not have predicted that its previous occupants would leave at this precise time, and we would only be staying for about 20 more minutes. The question went unanswered and a manager (?) had now joined us. He asked us again to leave the table. I pointed out that "our" corner had now been taken over so there was nowhere else to sit or stand and he rudely told us that we should "go outside to finish our drinks". This was unappealing on a cold and wet October day so we left, feeling extremely aggrieved. I shall never set foot there again under present management, no matter how good the food may be. It is run by greedy, ignorant and rude people. We went then to the nearby Barley Mow where we were made very welcome indeed by a good humoured landlord and friendly locals, saving our day.

Six of us visited on Saturday halfway through a walk.
Beer was very good & the food was excellent.

Well worth a visit, particularly if you are hungry

We had our second visit to this enjoyable pub in under month

love the pub and the outside area's

Dissapointed that the Charcuterie Board didnt include 3 or 4 dishes from the first visit, in fact the difference couldnt have been more dissapointing, from a culinary major success of great pate, beautiful venison, amazing cherizo that got us to return to a less than average terrine, awful beef and no cherizo - we will try it one more time in case it was offcut Wednesday

Was in the area so dropped in as I had heard it's had a refurb. Very nice decor & very busy with food. Nice to see a puppy in there! I like pubs which take dogs in :) They seemed to have a good outdoor area with a large kidsplay house/slide. Too cold for my daughter to play but good to know for next time. We only had a snack (chunky chips) but they were great :)

Love this pub, lovely food and polite staff. Would recommend!

An excellent pub with attentive and pleasant staff. The food isn't the cheapest around but then the quality is good and it still represents value. Have eaten there alone and with the family so my definite recommendation is not a 'one off'.

Had Sunday lunch wiv friends (the Squire &his lady) here, splendid meal. Thoroughly enjoyed the game pie, recommend it. Busy little pub at lunchtime. Ample parking, play-area, and plenty of ground at the back for kids, or dogs to let off steam (in the warmer weather!) Staff were friendly and attentive. And the NZ wine was excuisite! We will certainly be going again...soon! TJ

Hi All

We went in there on Saturday night. It has recently undergone a renovation. All I can say is that they must have had a complete change of staff as it was completely different to the reviews above.
Food was great and mostly sourced locally. There is a farm across the road where they get pork and ribs from.
House white was great too.

Staff were prompt with food and attentive but not in your face. When a small accident occurred with a tiny amount of wine being spilt on the gravy, without even asking it was whisked away and a new serving was brought out.

Although we didn't eat outside, the garden area has been improved and increased in size.

Seriously recommended now its been done up.

Overpriced, the new potato salad i ordered was grey and soggy. the pasta salad was plain with huge lumps of sea salt sprinkled over making it inedible. Service was slow. A big dissapointment!
buttercrumpet - 3 Feb 2009 13:13
This pub has just got more unpleasant every time I have visited. The staff although friendly are constantly changing and hardly any of them seem to be able to speak enough English to even take your order. The food is of the worst, most overambitious and OVERPRICED kind. For want of a better word in my and my friends opinion it is substandard. If you want good traditional, local, well prepered food then this is NOT the place to go.In summer a very nice place to go and sit in the garden with the children but that is about all it is good for.

Lenka you missed out The Stag, if your going to use cheap tricks to promote a pub you work in or manage do it right.
Saying all that we have been to 2 of this groups pubs and been totally underwhelmed the food is very very average but pricey same with the beer.
ThePilgrim - 8 Jan 2008 11:24
Food delicious. I recommend the warm duck salad to start followed by pushing the boat out for the seasonal special fillet steak. They also have outstanding deserts to satisfy any sweet taste (creme brulee being my favorite). If you like your ales served well, then try the ones they have here, last week I was on Hobgoblin, Tea and Loxley. Lovely. Staff are very friendly, with faultless service. I have eaten 5 times there in the last few weeks and have yet to be dissapointed in any way. To end a good evening, they have Jura whiskey - what more could you wish for... perhaps accommodation? I stayed at Woodgreen House B&B directly opposite - ideal.

JANEP'S comments about the duke sep 2006 she also managed to visit all of the dukes sister pubs and managed to slate some of the pub groups competition, oh shame on you for your vitriolic comments, this web site was designed to allow the public to comment good or bad about its performance and possibly to encourage a landlord to note the views of their clients. however the managment of this pub group are more interested in attacking other pubs and their staff to promote their own self interest. i hope that anyone reading these words would take their business to competition that they so enjoy attacking. i would also advise landlords reading this to make there feelings known to put a stop to this hijacking of what is a great asset to customers. rant over!!

well i never did LENKA1 has been to all of the duke of cambridges sister sites, me thinks i smell a rat. "oh what a tangled web we weave when first we practise to deceive but when we've tried it for a while how vastly we improve our style, or in this case one's pub rating"!!!

Great pub!! Superb beer, friendly and efficient staff and the food was simply amazing. We will be back and I thoroughly recommend this pub to others.

We ate at this pub a couple of weeks ago - the night before the smoking ban, and if the ban had not come into place the following day we would not return as the pub had insufficient facilities to cope with the copius amounts of smoke! Our clothes absoloutely reaked.
The food, in our opinion, was over priced as essentially we were sitting, eating in a pub and nothing more. To our shock we also noted how they increased the price of one of the dishes on the blackboard by 2.00 at 9.30 in the evening. No excuses, you cannot do that midway through the night.
I felt like telling the people who had just arrived to ask for the price of 30 minutes earlier if that was the dish they wanted.
All the puddings were a rounded off figure at 5.00 which we felt was incredibly overpriced - so generally - too expensive. But its sister pub nearby, worth it as it appears to be more of a restaurant than a pub.

Lovely looking pub in a great area, nice interior, and I had the Spitfire which seemed well kept.

Sadly I can't reccomend the Sunday Lunch, we had Roast Beef at 12.50 it was very dissapointing, one and a half wafer thin slices of rather tough Beef, 3 or 4 roast potatoes which were OK and veg was also OK. I would have been dissapointed if they had charged 5 for this meal, at 12.50 it is a joke.

On the upside, one of us had the steak which was good, if a bit steep at around 12.50.

Service was timely and freindly. I would reccomend this nice pub, just be careful what you order off the menu.

Did we visit the same pub?!
I totally disagree with the previous comment.

I found this pub charming; the food was excellent and the staff wanted to cater for our every need. Definitely visiting again.

Superb!

went here for dinner, what a lovely place set in great area, but ohh!!!!!! what a dissapointment the food was.

small portions, overpriced and really pretty awful, service was almost non existent and how true the last post is it was freezing cold, no fire on, why have a open fire if you dont bother to light it.

definatly a place to avoid
anonymous - 13 Dec 2006 01:08
Great pub. Very friendly, helpful staff. Really nice food and relaxed but cosy feel. One slight moan (only slight) It gets a bit chilly in the evening due to extractor fan and they don't like to put the wood burning stove on because it gets very hot. Had the fire been going that would have toppped the evening off. Overall a great place. Will definately be going back

This is now an excellent pub. It changed hands earlier in the years and is truly worth a visit. The food is first class (freshly prepared using local and seasonal produce) and the service is relaxed friendly and professional. Have visited on numerous occasions this summer and will keep this as one of my favorites. Also a good range of cask ales

We enjoyed Good Food in a very Relaxing Atmosphere and would Recommend it to all!

Lovely Pub!
The Staff couldn't have been more attentive and we felt really at home.
We enjoyed a superb evening meal and will be recommending the Pub/Restaurant to all!
The new management team appear to be on the ball with everything.
Top Marks!

This has now changed hands. Still a nice pub with a couple of nicely kept real ales and lovely atmosphere.

The food however has gone up in price and down in quality and quantity. I was fairly shocked when I took a friend there a week ago.

My meal was small, unexciting and expensive!
slugbreff - 20 Mar 2006 16:39
Now this pub is worth a visit, especially for food. Service can be a bit slow, but staff very nice and mean well. Far better bet than Barley Mow on the green.
