Well run family pub, lots of room for the kids to let off steam in the fantastic beer garden, marquee and play area. Food is homemade and served most evenings, good value for money .... Bar maids are stunners .... well worth a look on a tues wed and thurs, but on the mon and a fri they are generally quite hairy around the lips. Every village has an idiot and i think this award goes to someone call Paul, a local cab driver ...talk about know all .... mind you very snappy dresser, looks like hes a serial mourner at the funerals at st michaels as he always wears black ...each to there own i sppose.
Give it a try anyway

The pub looked like a oldy wordly place from the green outside so we thought we'd try it... mistake. Loud music, were advised that the Pride was off. We tried it and so it was. The girl behind the bar suggested that she pulls a couple of pints to clear the awful taste. Surely, had she been trained well enough, she would have known that the barrel needed changing or tipping. She didn't have a clue (or so it seemed). We opted for a couple of 1/2 Guinesses and were out of there as soon as we could.
Didn't seem to be the kind of pub where 'gays' would be comfortable to go and have a quiet drink! Even if I was a lesbian, this is the last pub I'd go to for a drink with 'my fellow lesbians'!

Shame. A lovely old country pub on a small green blighted by low climbing aircraft directly overhead on full throttle from Heathrow a few miles away. The bar lady immediately warned us the London Pride (only real ale on) might be a "bit tangy", yes it was well passed its best and undrinkable. Turnover may not be sufficient to sell a 72 pint barrel in a few days. My bad timing, perhaps. Pub had loud music playing on the juke box and widescreen TV screens on.
Didn't notice any obvious gays, not that I was looking.

Popped in for a lunchtime pint and was welcomed by friendly barmaid who served up a decent pint of Pride. Can't comment on locals, gay or otherwise (does it matter?!!), as I was only punter there. Pub was clean and presentable and toilets in top condition. Judging by pictures on the wall this is a thriving locals pub and would visit again. Don't be put off by negative comments elsewhere.

i take it this is some sort of running joke about the Crown being a gay bar ??

its possibly the least gay establishment i have ever visited !! top place with top people in charge of it !!

Nice place to just hang out with all the boys being an active homosexaul its nice to just relax with fellow homosexauls without being judged i would rate this pub 8-10 pop in for a glass of wine you wont be dissapointed.

I have visited this pub regulary over the past 10yrs and can honestly say that the present hosts are the best since Rene. A traditional local with all the trimmings. Garden, rear patio area, Darts, Football teams and a willingness to support their locals in whatever event they need a venue for, within reason of course. A marque is also available for hire. The food is good quality traditional Pub Grub. The London pride is great when it is good and always refunded when it is not for what ever reason which is the beauty of a real ale. A place where you can always find someone to discuss the problems of the world with. Sadly friends of mine have been barred for overstepping the mark with fair warning to change their conduct. If you like the traditional quirky real English pub atmosphere that wars have been fought for Come on down to the Crown.

Wouldn't care to comment about the Gay Pub observations! However, I have occasionally dropped by for a lunchtime pint and a read of my paper in the garden. Not such a decent selection of Ales as some pubs, I drink Guiness here. Funnily enough, I've never been made to feel particularly welcome and I can't understand this. Maybe the're a bit suspicious of strangers round these parts...

I know that everyone is entitled to their opinion but I am a regular at The Crown and I just cannot see how HortonKid can say these things about the place. He quotes Poppy77 but when you read back to his/her comment it doesn't say 'down to earth' but it does quite rightly mention a lot of good things that Frankie & Phil have achieved in this pub. I remember the 'beautiful' beer garden being a virtual wasteland before they did it up and put in the patio, which incidentally is the best patio by far around the area. As for not being family oriented, how many pubs do you know that even have boxes of toys for the children to play with? how many have scooters and things in the garden for the kids?

As for not being made welcome, that hs got to be the most disengenuous observation of your whole comment. I have also eaten there with family and friends on many occasions and we never had cause for complaint and I have eaten in many establishments from the the poshest to the cheapest.

Apologies for rambling on but I finally felt compelled to reply to a comment about The Crown, if only to give a balanced argument. I hope others will follow suit........long live the Crown!!!!

If you're out for a pint with the lads after working all day on site, this pub is for you. If youre chasing women or men its not at all the place to go. I think that Poppy77 had the right idea about the place in as much that the staff and locals are 'down to earth'. Problem is its the sort of place that makes you feel like a loser and its not family orientated unless you're part Pikey. If it hadn't been fifty feet away i'd NEVER drink in the place. Eating is cheap but you get what you pay for so dont complain. As for adjectives like welcoming, beautiful and re-born!!' you must be joking...
Finally, the Guiness and the lager is just fine, as it is in lots of other pubs.

whoever wrote its a gay pub is obviously a disgruntled barred person - weekdays in the evening theres normally a load of people having a pint after work, yes, quite a lot of scottish, all employed at terminal 5 mainly !!
Frankie and Phil have done a great job with the place and the sunday lunches are great value - yes it can get a bit boisterous at times with some of the younger locals but overall its a great little pub with loads of character and always a brilliant welcome

Perhaps if the writer of the last review can find time between their spelling and grammer lessons, they can check some facts out before their next review. I am a regular drinker at the Crown and, to my knowledge, the few Scottish people who do come in are gainfully employed and very friendly. Please excuse them if they had a little too much to drink....in a pub!!!. The bar staff are always clean and tidy and above all they are very friendly to anyone who is courteous to them. The pub is old but always clean and I would hate to have a circa 16th century pub that was too bright inside.......it's called character!!!!

The pub is the same as it was two years ago.
Food is reasonably priced pub grub.

Despite the anonymous comment made on 17 September, this is not a "gays pub".
It is a pub where anyone is welcomed. If the person who made that comment spent more time concentrating on their diction and less time worrying about their sexual inadequacies then I am sure they would benefit.
Just to make the point, this is a public house (or pub), not a "bar". A bar is the place inside a pub. You and your boyfriends are as welcomed as anyone else

Been a while since I have been here and am proud to say nothing has slipped, the drink is fab, the food is to die for and the staff are as friendly as ever both new and old.

I have been frequenting this pub for a number of years and if you want to enjoy excellent food, beers and company its an absolute must, this pub also boasts a fantastic beer garden and fab roasts on Sundays. We were made very welcome by all locals and friendly staff.

Total thumbs down for this cramped pub poor beer selection and warm in the summer. yuck! mission impossible to get to the bar for a drink with the local drunks laying across it best part about this pub is driving past it and not going in!!!

Everytime I drink in The Crown I leave with a smile on my face. It's not just the staff who are great, the customers are absolutely fantastic and there is always a good laugh to be had with them all.

I have been to this pub on several occasions and like always the quality and sevice keeps bringing me back, a lovely sunday roast washed down with the coldest of draught beers ever sold
makethatalarge1 - 17 Oct 2005 14:26
What can I say it was a very enjoyable experience with a warm friendly atmosphere in a nice country pub. I was made feel like one of the locals and will definitely be back for my next sunday lunch

I agree with all that has been said, beer, food, staff absolutely wonderful and the beer garden is very nice and relaxing.

The Crown, Horton, is what I would describe as a traditional English pub with much character and atmosphere. The landlord & lady have developed a beautiful beer garden area, great for children, and continue to organise great events such as Guy Fawks fire-works displays & Halloween costume parties, as well as generously sponsoring the local football team.
The Crowns staff and locals are friendly and welcoming, the food is great value for money and the beer, particularly the Stella...in my opinion, is the best in the area!!!
Poppy77 - 5 Oct 2005 13:22
The current Landlord and Landlady have turned this pub back into a proper village local. They cater for all people, young and old, and there is always a nice welcoming atmosphere. They make every person, local or stranger, who crosses their threshold very welcome. The food is very nice and very good value for money, especially the Sunday Roast. I have seen people with dogs in the garden on numerous occasions so perhaps they are not permitted in the bar. The beautiful garden has also got lots of kiddies bikes etc. for the children to play with. The pub has been re-born!!!

Traditional Local pub.
Big screen which shows all Rugby, Cricket and football matches.
Nice traditional bar food and one real ale on tap.
A bit smokey and no dogs allowed.
