Total dive more's the pity as it's handy for the town and station - but beer is suspect and interior rather threatening. Outside should be a lovely garden, but it's overrun with uncontrolled kids from patrons who simply sit drinking. Was also not impressed by rat in the car park! Needs investment to bring it up to today's standard because there is so much competition nowadays.

Love this pub always will had some great times in there!!!!!!
|
The Top House is finally on the up!! The new manager, Rob, is a crazy Irishman, who genuinely seems to want to make the pub better. 241 meals are back on the menu, with early birds there as well. The atmosphere now is relaxed and friendly, a right laugh. In 2 weeks, it's gone from being stale to vibrant. So come along and see for yourself.
|
finally the old manager gone - who ran pub into ground unfortunately but new team in now and getting busier by the day good riddance to bad rubbish
|
Now under new management, thank god!!!! they seem to care about the pub and doing 2 meals for the price of one
|
good varied menu, staff seem friendly, needs a pool team and some activity come on sort it out - used to be the best !!! come on bring back the good old days !!!
|
food good staff friendly. witnessed the so called manager tell cusstomers to f*** off and heard him call us f'ing old c***ts on our way out the door. we spent a lot of money that night and will certainly not be returning until management has changed hands which we hear will be soon. friends of ours were called c***ts for leaving through fire escape. not on.

Sh*T Pub. Don't bother.
The staff/owners don't care - and it shows.
|
barr staff are greats ,foods ok but could do with the kitchen to be open longer.shame about the landlady..hasent got a clue..needs a decent landlord and it would be the old packed pub it used to be..
|
Went to this pub for a leaving do with come work colleagues and at time when the bell was rung, one bar worker shouted "yeah f*** off"
disgusting service and terrible staff attitude
|
Glad to hear things are on the up for the top house. what a shame the old landlord didnt last.
|
Pub has been taken over since Jan of 2008 so the old landlord is no more if you could call him that, i have been informed he was kicked out by the brewery which is no surprise.
Proper pub menu again, friendly service, wife and i had some food from the 2 for £10 meal deal which was second to none. Now that this pub is back to what it used to be i suggest you give it a go. i avoided it when the old landlord was there but now i have no problems with having a drink in there.

Very poor. No atmosphere. Unintersted staff. Got there at 8.15 pm one evening to be told the kitchen was shut - a whole group of us wanted to order food. Sign outside said full menu available until 8.30 pm!

totally unbelivable.. visited top house for the first time in decades, to watch footie, NO real ales, all lager, even then they ran out of kronenborg.absolutly piss poor. walked down to railway to get ale. leave pub well alone. manager hopeless.
|

I have been drinking in the tophouse for years and now i dont bother going there at all the owner is a womanising old pervert and he treats his staff bad i hear him shout at them and he also over charges for food annd drinks if i wanted a microwave roast id stayed at home and had one!! Pints are now around £2.90 why dont you go to jacob post or railway or kingshead they are all cheaper!!! do not go to the top house until that man hs left.

what a load of rubbish! sunday roast is MICROWAVED at best, cold food, rubbish atmosphere, staff all look so very unhappy, very expensive. bring back the 2 for £8 menu and the old owners. such a shame run into the ground.

I've had a few drinks and meals since the new manager arrived and he is a very friendly guy. He said that a new menu will be available soon. Two new pool tables have been installed. Also had a drink with the new owners, Dave & Bev, (very friendly too) who have big plans for this pub. All in all a vast improvement on last managers! Give it a try.

Sooner the managers are out the better , their attitude stinks - towards the undesirable element that will no doubt try to return once they have left. Hope the new owners keep the undesirables out as it would ruin one of the friendliest pubs in burgess hill.

Good John Barras site in the heart of burgess hill worth a visit for the cheap food and range of fuities and good for watching sport
|
intresting reading those last comments.spoke to the current managers about them and they still didnt know their leaving date.i think 'dave brown' should have waited until the current managers had been informed first before messages started appearing on this site.

new landlord:hi reders name is dave brown we will hopefully be taking over the top house in december.whats planned!!homemade ,food hog roasts ,curry night .bar snacks .jnew pool table (we want pool and darts teams please)live entertainment will be introduced.wait and see the new menus (mouth watering)....we want the old customers back !!!!
|
why do people get so down on this place, i have nothing but good things to say for this pub and the managers, maybe if people got to know the managers they would realise that they are nice people. maybe they seem a bit down at the moment because the pub is about to be sold to a lease holder so not only do they face losing their jobs but also their home.I'll be honest i wont miss john barras but mandy and james will be missed, they dont stand for any nonsense so you get very few idiots in there, maybe the person who posted the last comment is one of those people who didnt like the fact that they now have to behave in the top house unlike the old days, i hope whoever takes over doesnt send the pub back to those dark old days.

What a shame the John Barras and current management are no more. They started of so well with friendly management, ended so quickly, and managed to alienate a small number of their customers- high spending customers at that. Customers that decided to go elsewhere. They have since voted with their feet, the 30 sec walk down the hill is well worth it.

OK for lunch time drinks, don't bother in the evening with Children, the landlady will request you leave. Note this pub serves "Ding Ding food"
anonymous - 17 Sep 2006 18:19 |
in the last comments i meant to say - are NOT grumpy and miserable - yeah you can miss words out after a good night on the beer at the the top house
anonymous - 12 Sep 2006 01:38 |
i agree with the last comments.i started to visit this pub just before the world cup and decided to make this my home for the england games,i was always made to feel welcome by the managers and staff (normally at the door so they could keep an eye on the 'rowdies'- not that there ever seemed to be any). i have been back on many occasions since and after visiting some other pubs in the area i can only say that the managers are grumpy and miserable and if you get to know them they are quite possibly the most welcoming people in the area.tried the windmill - feel sorry the staff . good luck to the top house

Lovely family pub with a brilliant atmosphere. Clientele from all age ranges, lovely bar staff. Very friendly and excellent service. I don't care what anyone says about this pub it is an excellent pub with a pool table, non smoking section, two beer gardens, pool table, itbox, various fruties. I go here most nights and wouldn't go anywhere else. Definitely worth a visit.

Good pub at lunchtimes, don't bother with children in the evening (you will be evicted), very odd landlady the staff are frightened of her
anonymous - 14 Apr 2006 06:57 |
good restaurant, good bar, has an good mix of people... BUT its not a pub, as with the last persons comments i agree they shouldn't turn down buisness they need to work out what they want, a restaurant or a pub atmosphere.
|
we visited this pub one eveing as a couple, the pub was faultless in it's food service and atmospher
4 weeks later we decided as it was my wifes birthday, we would visit as a family,
this was not to be the case ,for as we entered the bar area we were puounced on we asked for a table for six, and were told NO children after six pm discusted we took our trade elsewhere, spent £98.00 on food and beveridge and had a great evening out
can a pub afford to lose this sort of money by this Anti family approach to business in a food orientated pub WE DONT THINK THEY CAN.
WE fully reccommend the devils dyke pub (brewers fayre) who serviced our requirements for the evening with open arms
a copy of our recipt will be sent to the top house as evidence of their loss for the evening. what a shame.
|
If you can avoid being rugby tackled by a Mr Middletom at the bar then you have a chance of being served my the moody landlady who is trying her best to rid the pub of it's previous low lives (and not doing a bad job) Good if yu are getting to my age and like to be able to listen to people when socialising. Food ain't bad either!
|
You will normally find a drunkard named Marvin Leppard slumped at the bar willing to show you his goods

Situated rather obviously at the top of Sation Road in Burgess Hill a brisk 100 yards from the staion. Lively and friendly
