user reviews of the New Moon, Welling

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

I remember this as an excellent pub originally called the Station Hotel. I used to go in there religiously every Friday after spending an evening learning to ballroom dance at the Court School of dancing (above the old cinema) in Bellegrove road, both of which have now gone. The Station Hotel then changed to the Station Pub, this was even better. I remember going in there on my 21st birthday and drinking Hurricane Hattie cocktails - never knew what they were made of but were fantastic, best cocktail I have ever tasted. The decor was stylish and classy, sort of piano bar. I remember when seeing it as the Inferno years later how horrified I was at what was once a lovely pub.

The New Moon and Sixpence closed sometime in 2004 and reopened the same year as Infernos. All the reviews on this page dont refer to its old guise (including by yours truly) and relate to its latest incarnation, but Infernos is now thankfully listed on its own.

Gooners comments are a bit harsh. Dj's on a friday and Saturday night are a lot better now than before.

Real shame that this pub is always empty on a fri and sat, I suppose it does not help when the Dj is playing the same old music night in night out and wont change it when asked. This place really could be buzzing if they got in the right management and did the place up a bit and also did some theme nights.
Oh well we can only dream.

thanks for the complement rob, you made it happen as much as me though buddy.my number is the same if you want to call me. and to answer the question about why that fine irish manager left? he needed a break :)

Oh dear. I popped in Infernos last Saturday night, only to be confronted by the burley bouncer and abruptly warned to take of my "hoodie" before going any further.

This was my first visit in some time. I went with my girlfriend and after reading here that it's changed management, I just wanted to see the changes and oh, what changes! The good jukebox has gone, along with all the decent CD's and has now been replaced with one of those modern touch-screen devices, with crap music to boot. The clientele seems to have gotten worse and the DJ was playing drum 'n' bass. At least in the past they've tried having live bands etc, but with this turn in direction, I most certainly won't be going again. There was a horrible menacing atmosphere too and well, where as I thought this was a half decent boozer, I've changed my mind.

Thank you Infernos. I had some great laughs in here last year, shame I won't be doing the same in '06!

If Carteraa is a certain Irish bloke i think he is, then Inferno's was always a pub with great atmosphere when he was running the place.

Although I'd visited a few times in 2004, I didnt really become a regular at Infernos until last year.

I usually popped in, on days off from work, during the 4-5pm period, when Fosters was 1.45 a pint. I'd only heard bad things about this pub, but it suited me fine and with few clientele at time, I found I could have a drink in peace. I used to meet my girlfriend in there, but she despised it. She hated the run-down decor and for the life of her, couldnt understand the attraction. MAYBE the attraction for me was that the other pubs are so dire. At least they had a decent jukebox here and well, like I stated earlier, I just felt comfortable.

We'd occasionally go there in the evening and while it was okay, the pub defiantly changed once the Sun had gone down. As you'd fully expect, it was busier, but that wasnt the problem. To me, there seemed to be an air of menace. It always felt like something could kick off and I found that off putting. The Irish manager (why did he leave? Was it because business was slow?) was cool and very friendly. I don't know if he was responsible for introducing the live acts on Sundays, but it was a great idea. I wasnt too keen on the bands, but it was always a friendly atmosphere amongst the student types.

I left the area late last year and have only ventured back once. As others have commented, there seems to be a new manager, the third since I started going! I only stayed for a bit, but the place just didn't seem right. Maybe it had lost its familiarity to me. The bar staff had changed and RnB was playing on the jukebox.

Would anyone care to comment on what it's like on Sundays now? Do they still have live music?

shame to see the welling attitude still hasn't changed so much. I managed this bar for 9 month last year and met some really cool people. i think this place just needs to be looked after properly and be used for what it can do best: live music!!!! there were some really good times there on the sunday nights that we had live music. the place was full full full with no trouble at all. thats what this place needs, the feel good factor, live music and socialising without walking around with a chip on your shoulder.

Says a lot about a pub, when even the previus manager is barred! It got a bit bad there in Gareth's last month or so. He was letting all sorts of people in, and i didn't get on with his cronies one bit. The bouncers must be there for decoration :O Not keen on that new landlady. She gives people that look that suggests, we could all go and die for all she cares. I like the look of the new barmaid that's there early afternoons, even though she doesn't seem to understand English very well. Yes, she is English :P That new landlady will be be gone in something like 3 months. There have been 4 different managers there in the past year. One for every season :D Oh, the new landlady in the Plough and Harrow, says that Gareth has gone to spain, for good i think.
RobLawford - 21 Dec 2005 12:38
Under new management(again). New stern landlady says old manager is banned.

Standard operating proceedure then....
bigaerials - 19 Dec 2005 13:12
It never really seems to get busy in there, and i have to admit that i like it like that. Maybe that's why the landlords change fairly regularly. I did pop in there on a Friday night once, and it was packed. Never mind being suprised us knowing where Gdansk is, i think the barman is suprised we know where Poland is lol
RobLawford - 3 Sep 2005 08:48
Got to agree with Big Aerials about this one great music but too loud for the ten people in there, like Rob says really friendly manager and bar staff but I worry if it doesn't get busier if it'll last, which would be a shame as I'm new to the area and it's the only pub I like and feel is my taste. Seems from reading this sight it changes hands on a regular basis but it'd be a shame if it didn't work out for this landlord, but here's a tip for him re the music .....when the pub's full crank it up when pub's quiet keep it lower.
sirpucho - 2 Sep 2005 16:18
umm, been in there last 2 Tuesday nights. They have a sort of "indie disco" - the music's great but it's a bit too loud considering there's never more than 10 people in the pub at any one time ! The landlord always makes an effort to say hello and the barman is amazed anyone from Welling knows where Gdansk is!
All in all a pleasant surprise in DA16 land !

bigaerials - 2 Sep 2005 15:49
Went in there last night and had a bloody good night :D Feel a bit wrecked at the moment. They've got yet another landlord in there. The new guy Gareth is a laugh, and easy to talk to. I was talking to the barman, and Gareth actually came over and introduced himself :O That never happens in pubs elsewhere, no matter how friendly the staff is. It was well cool about 9pm, when they showed A Clockwork Orange :D
RobLawford - 16 Aug 2005 07:14
Yeah this is a pretty good pub. I used to get on really well with Jane who used to run the pub (she was that large blond woman behind the bar that you might remember) , and she was friendly enough, but it usually time to leave when her daughter started working behind the bar in the evenings, and it wasn't a good idea to be around after about 8pm unless you wanted to get involved in a fight with the under aged drinkers! However, Eric (irish guy and a good laugh) has totally transformed the pub. Now you get really good looking polish barmaids in there, the service is always friendly, and as long as you go at the right time there isn't any agro. Give 4-5pm a miss, as it's idiot hour :P Pool tables are great, good music on the cd thing on the wall, and the women that drink in there are well nice :D Oh, the green pool table near the exit to the beer garden is the best one to play on :)

Interesting pub.Awful D.J the night we went, living his own dream. Looked as though it could get a bit tasty in there if you looked at the wrong person. Not bad.
NorfLondon - 5 Jun 2005 15:56
This is without doubt the best pub in Bexley now. The new landlord has been a saviour. He has got rid of all the cokeheads and there is never any trouble in there now. He has also introduced rock and indie nights and has had some great acts performing. Although the music nights are at an early stage, I know that the landlord is keen to build on them and turn this once doomed pub into one of London's top entertainment hot spots. Go see for yourself!
codchops - 31 Mar 2005 13:40
right, this place has changed..A LOT..in the past few months its been sorted right out.no louts,no coke, loads of crumpet and live bands every sunday.also a rock dj on tuesday eves and a dj on friday and saturday eves.its also now a good local pub with some goodlooking bar staff.so get your bum bums down there sharpish.

i like this one,i'm there almost every weekend.but only hit it if you're in a group or if you know people in there.its crawling with coke heads in and out the bogs. on a good note, theres no 'youngsters', everyones 22+ and..thas it im afraid.stella on tap 2.50,carling 2.40,most bottles in the same region so pretty unreasonable.it has a new landlady every bloody month cos the place is such a hole, and you have to be careful where you look.his used to be an alright pub in the day,its now called inferno's(sounds like a name for a cheesy gay bar!!)and open til 12 on the weekend, but with the intro of yates n lloyds in bexleyheath, this place is to be doomed til its death.

Bright, colourful pub with 3 fruit machines, 4 pool tables, friendly staff, good music, video-jukebox, quiz machine, golf arcade machine, and cheap bottled beer.
