user reviews of the Dove, Bury St Edmunds

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

The Dove was one of the last pubs we tried on a late-October visit to Bury St Edmunds. It's outside the town centre. But it was very busy during our visit. There were no spare tables in either the main bar area or the adjoining smaller room. Ales were Woodforde's Wherry, Wolf Edith Cavell & Mad Wolf, Wychwood Hobgoblin Gold, Mighty Oak Captain Bob & Adnams Ghost Ship. Cider names were not listed. But all were from Burnard's. They were categorised as dry, medium and sweet. One of the best pubs in Bury.

My 2nd pub and a short stroll from Oakes Barn and its this lovely free house tucked away on a residential street.

On a Saturday its open 12-3 then from 5-11....so at 12.45 its heaving when I arrive.

There are 6 ales on with most of them locales. I chose a pint of Grainstore Steelback IPA @ 4.2%. A very decent drop and is brewed a few steps away at the GK Westgate Brewery.

The mix of clientele is wide, with a cracking atmosphere, lots of good banter with people of all ages. Very much a locals pub just a stone’s throw from town but it’s superb.

Spartan old fashioned decor and the pub still has a parlour. There’s a brick open fireplace in the middle of the room.

This is the best pub of the day in Bury for me, I visit 6 in total and this wins.

On my next visit to Bury I will head straight here.

This pub is a case-study in how to run a cracking ale house: no music, no food, no Sky, no quiz nights, no karaoke, no disco. Just eight-or-so carefully curated local ales well kept by a clued-up landlord. The only downside I know of is the carpets, which used to smell of sick, but apparently they've been cleaned now...!

Still hands-down the best Real Ale pub in Bury St Edmunds.
Its won CAMRA East Anglian pub of the year too.
An ever-changing range of ales, porters, ciders from breweries all over the country. You can easily get a top-notch pint of under £3.
No lager though.Plenty of red wine though.
A passionate,knowledgable landlord.
The pub is refreshingly idiot-free too.
The plan is simple, tables,no music,no pool or darts, only pork pies and excellent local pork scratchings, friendly regulars, many of whom practise the art of conversation.
Always busy, whenever you go in,and for very reason, because it s great.

Rare to find such a 'proper' pub like this - does all the things a pub should do so very well.

Every pint I've had in here has been perfectly kept and the landlord really knows his stuff. He obviously knows what makes a proper pub too as you won't find quiz machines, TVs and the like in here. Don't bother asking for Stella or Carling either!

I only wish there were more pubs like this around.

Had a tremendous pint of Maldon Gold last night - beer quality here on 2 visits as good as anywhere. Pub very busy with drinkers, including female drinkers at 10.30, and a warm welcome.

Excellent pub - very knowledgable and friendly landlord with proper decently kept real ale - a real find and recommended - particularly liked the pint of scratchings

Went there on my own ( I'm female ) and was not welcomed except by a letcherous old perv propping up the bar

Best pub I've been in for a long time. Superb selection of beers, usually about 8 on offer. Had a lovely pint of Maldon Gold. Friendly, relaxed but buzzy atmosphere. How a pub should be...

Super place - how a proper pub should be - well kept beer, welcoming staff and a lovely hubbub of chat! Will certainly be back!

I have to post a '10' to boost this pub's rating even more because it is the best pub that I have been into for a long while. As everyone says, the beer is very well kept, but this pub is special because of the welcome. In most pubs, people stay with their friends and dont talk to strangers but here it is easy to chat to people you dont know. Just arrive at the bar and start with "Have you tried X" "What is Y like? and you will easily get chatting to the friendly regulars

I used to travel to Bury on business regularly but I visited this pub last week for the first time as I had always assumed it was a Greene King outlet. It still is but the licensees are apparently allowed to run it as a Free House. (Perhaps GK would like to extend this idea to other areas of the land where they have a stack of pubs). Anyway, very friendly, very busy and great beer (I had Brewers Gold but there were beers from Nethergate.Woodforde's;Elgoods and Brandon). Very reasonable prices and I can easily understand why it is Suffolk Pub of the Year. Looks like they either make their own pork scratchings or certainly bag them up on site. A highly recommended pub.

After an unsteady start from the lovely town of Bury i was recommended here from a few friends and boy was i pleased. They offer a variety of ales with great depth and taste. Unlike the very few that try to compete within the town, the Dove offers great customer service and beer that tastes like it should! I hear there is a new place opening up in Bury so watch out, but for now you are most definately on the top of my list for a stop off when passing through....

The commitment to local breweries is clear and the landlord and landlady impressed me with there attentiveness and eagerness to make sure that everyone becomes a regular. The beer? Wherry and Brewer's Gold kept as well as anywhere I've ever drunk them. The turn over of beers keeps them fresh and long may it continue. Thanks to Tom for the company and local accomodation.

Just great. Knowledgeable landlord serving proper beer in a pleasant old-fashioned pub atmosphere. 6 real ales from mostly local breweries like Woodfordes, Elgoods, City of Cambridge but I also had a lovely sample of "Coventry Climax" from the Burton Bridge Brewery in Staffs.

Pint prices (2.50-2.70) also lower than the 3+ which is the current average across the town.

Highly recommended. Will be returning on a regular basis.

A significant find. A bit out of the way but well worth it if you like a decent pint. 6 real ales on on my visit in late March, two being dark and all produced in East Anglia. The place was busy even at just after 7 on a Saturday with no free tables. Despite this the service was efficient. I tried the Elgood's Snake Slayer which was an excellent porter with lovely coffee flavours, followed by another dark beer, recommended by the genial landlord as he pulled it through, Spectrum Dark Fantastic. Brilliantly well-kept beer and many drinkers njoying the range and quality. Definitely worth finding.

Called in here the other day after being told by friends what a great pub it was. I was not disappointed. Six pumps on, with the staples being Woodfordes Wherry and Crouch Vale Brewers Gold and four ever changing guest ales. The 1/2 pint of pork scratchings was a great idea. It may have been my first visit to this pub but it certainly won't be my last. Congratulations to the landlord Roger for running a corking pub.

Just what Bury needed, pity the occasional GK brew appears but needs must and at least the other 5 pulls are not GK. Like the half pint of scratchings idea, a first move into home catering by Roger bent on proving his presentation skills. Remember to ask for something out of the cellar just to keep the old boy fit!

This is a great pub. We've only been on Monday evenings but we feel like regulars. The landlord Roger is very friendly and welcoming and has a somewhat unique approach. He has, apart from a couple of regulars, different beers every week so every visit is like going to a mini beer festival and his choice of beers is to be admired and the way he keeps them is perfect. A true lover of beer who knows his stuff. If you don't want to miss out on every one of the guest beers you must go more than once a week!

Every 3rd Monday evening of the month is a folk music one with a very impressive group of players and singers.

Only open 6 weeks or so,but I Like what Roger has in mind for this pub.....guest ales with no frills but a warm genuine welcome.
Roger is a true devotee to real ales and the notion that pubs are for ales/having a relaxing pint or 4.
Dogs allowed.Chippy up the road.near the Rose and Crown.
Its very early days and this place deserves the support of anyone who appreciates good beer.(How about some ciders too?)
I will use frequently.watch here for more of my reviews..................

All change here now - out have gone Sky, the banners for disco nights etc and in has come quality real ale. Last couple of visits have seen 6 ales on, including Brewer's Gold, Wherry, Nethergate Suffolk County amongst others. Very friendly and well worth a visit - the rarity that is a good proper pub in Bury.
