A good standard traditional English pub, worth the trip from town. 6 pumps with a selection of beers. Reasonable standard .

Have been in Worthing a bit recently and am likely to be much more for some time. Used to visit this pub regularly in the late '70s and occasionally since. Still a good pub for beer but looking rather sad inside. Am trying to find a regular drinking venue in the area, sadly because it still has a smell although much less so than in recent years, and because of the 'feel'of the place, it will not be here. A great shame as the beer is in good condition and served at the correct temperature.

Don't get me wrong I'm not a great fan of dark star
since about a year ago as all the beers have gone downhill
success etc etc
but it still surpasses most beers and at 245 for dark star in wetherspoons
You don't feel like you are being totally taken for a ride

Came in on a Saturday evening and the pub was very busy, most customers seemed like locals, the atmosphere was good and the beer choice was excellent.

There were 6 in our group and I think we all had something different. The pint of Mild I had was decent, but not the best, though this was the drink and not the way it was served.

Good photographs of the Worthing area adorned the walls all in all a very nice and pleasant pub and now comes the bad bit....what the hell is going on with the smell ?? The previous review to mine is from June 2012 and the smell was mentioned then. It smells of bad drains and how the locals / regular's don't notice it god only knows. All 6 of us commented on it and ultimatly it made us the leave the pub for the Swan.

If ayone from the pub reads this please do something about the smell. I only visited Worthing once a year on average but there were locals in my group and they won't be returning while the smell persists.

Silly as it is I will mark the pub down because of the smell

Best pub in Worthing. Apart from the smell, which hasn't gone away.

Good range of quality beers and friendly staff and locals but i have to agree about that stink near the front door.

Absolute gem of a small backstreet local, stocking 6 ales on hand pull - Dark Star Hophead as a regular and five ever-changing guests (at least one of which will be a dark beer such as a mild, porter or stout). A blackboard to the left of the bar advertises what's conditioning in the cellar, and the wall opposite that has a tally count of the different beers served. The beer festival on the last weekend of January is always popular, but well worth squeezing in for.

The best range of beers in Worthing and a nice pub, but it does stink - kind of sour damp straw, possibly dry rot. Littlecon, if your piss smells like that, see a doctor.Despite the smell, still an essential visit along with the nearby Swan(which doesn't smell)

smells strongly of piss, now it's winter and the doors are closed it's unbearable

Visited on Sat 23rd Oct : Decent and friendly pub with a good beer range, however, as commented on earlier, there is certainly a strange smell here, very odd and very strong, a cross between manure and wet dog, not pleasent and meant we only stayed for one pint as the smell was really offputting..........

I had a well below par pint of Hophead in here on Monday evening. Just goes to show that my 2010 Good Beer Guide is already out of date! No evidence that this pub has been decorated within the last 40 years. It's very much a local pub for local people. They don't get many strangers round these parts!
I won't be rushing back.

By far the best pub in Worthing, recently re-decorated ,so the "wet dog" smell refered to in a previous review has now gone. Very welcomimg pub, great atmosphere, always at least one dark ale on tap, plus several guest ales from small regional breweries.

Arundel Castle, Darkstar Hophead & Golden Gate, Ringwood Fortyniner, Hampshire Lionheart, Gadds Dogbolter (later Ringwood Porter). Small horseshoe bar faces entrance, carpetted surround, wood tables, cushioned stools chairs & barstools. Plasma to left of bar showing racing ystdy, with commentary, but unintrusive. Dartboard far end of left spur, real fire to rt not lit, but must provide a warm welcome when required. Pub has a real local chatty feel, with punters evidently knowing each other & sharing a laugh with the guv behind bar. Various old photos to front of pub, the rear rt could do with a freshen up, some decorative hops looking a bit sorry for themselves. Two beers went during our brief visit but both were immediately changed, maintining six on offer. The only negative was an odd odour which one of the group described as 'wet-dog'; well, my dogs dont smell like that!

Well worth seeking out this back street pub opposite the gasometerand near the hospital. Quite a small pub and usually quite busy with plenty of people sitting at the bar. Always planty of banter going on especially when the landlady is on duty. Good selection of excellent real ales from microbreweries. Does basic pub grub and while I have not eaten there the food is supposed to be pretty good. Not sure I like the fact taht the V is on most of the time but this is a minor fault compared to all the excellent qualities of the pub.

Excellent traditional boozer run by enthusiasts. I have used it for more than 10 years and recommend without hesitation. Great choice and great quality control.

Simply good beers and good company.

Decent food as well.

I must agree with the previous posters. This really is worth a visit and yes, you probably will stay the evening. As a non real ale drinker its not the beer that attracts me but the way the place is run. You only get a pub full of nice people if someone has the balls to throw out the trash, and they have and continue to do so.(Except for Freeman Hardy and Willis)(Local joke, dont even try to understand)

Easily Worthing's best real ale pub. Strong links with
Dark Star/Evening Star hence bootled Belgian beers as well
as cask ales. To find it, aim for the gasometer!

Thank God for the Selden !

Called in here a couple of years ago and it was easily the best pub for real ale in Worthing. A mate called in last weekend and confirmed that it's not changed. Great news
lout_from_the_lane - 11 Apr 2005 13:42
A traditional local with 6 real ales at all times. Very friendly welcome and excellent food
