user reviews of the Hole in the Wall, York

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

There are plenty of average to above average pubs in York centre; it's almost like a template of averageness. I visited 15 in 2 days and none stood out as outstanding, or indeed the opposite, but all were pleasant enough. The Hole in the Wall was comfortable, staff efficient and my pint of Pedigree (3.50) satisfactory.

Went back in to give it another try...much better with 4 beers on including 2 good seasonals...it would be good to be consistent!

Went in last night for a pint and there was only 1 pump on, so a restaurant that sells beer as opposed to a proper pub. A shame as I remember when it always had 5 good beers on...

To be fair to this place I had just come straight from the Lamb and Lion so that's a hard act to follow.

However, with Marstons never really being one of my favourite beweries this was always going to tinge my opinion.

In fact it had pretty much the same offerings as the Minster - all being light ales. Can't remember the name of the drink I had but I know I didn't finish it.

Seems more of a eating establishment rather than a drinking venue.

Very average.

I thought this pub was excellent - and I've been to a few in my time :) Lovely atmosphere, great staff and location. I'll definitely be going again!

My familyand I often visit York and find this pub one of the best in York for food ! The Sunday Roast Dinners are to die for great value for money and very friendly staff make this a must visit public house for anybody wanting quality, relaxing, typical English pub grub set in the stunning setting of York Minster !

Stopped in Dec 23rd and caught the tail end of some carolers-which was a nice touch. Cozy atmosphere and does have some space although not a lot. Has music and a few games so not a traditional real ale pub per se. However, having said that it did have 5 pulls available and served a very nice 49er.

I have had meals here before but recently quite unhappy with the food . We ordered to pork sunday roasts which should have come with a large yorkshire pudding and apple sauce as stated on the menu . However the girl came to us and said that there were only little yorkshires and so the chef would do a few little ones instead which we agreed to . When the meal came it was only one burnt small yorkshire each. The pork was lovely but no apple sauce . At 8 per meal total 16 it was quite disappointing. I saw the same thing happen at another table at our side .Not good for food !!!

Had a good pint of Honey Bee in here today. Friendly barmaids. Some guys at the bar seemed to be trying to explain offside to them. Why do people bother!

A little on the dingy side, this is your usual city centre Marstons/Mansfield establishment. Nothing horrible or anything, but unless you're with good company, not much to recommend it with so much quality a stone's throw away

I popped in on Friday 6th February, and although friendly and clean; I was let down solely by my pint of beer (Marstons Pedigree) which tasted a little sour. At 6.00pm it was doubtful that would have been the first pint of the day, so I think a little more care in the cellar management department might be in order.

I would definately return to the pub, but would avoid draught products there in future.

Very expensive. A pint of Ugly Sisters & a glass of orange was 5.07! We won't be back.

I have visited this pub a few times whilst on hioliday in York. I have had several meals here also, a real friendly atmosphere and superb staff.

The pub is larger inside than first appears on the outside. The food is A1 and i thoroughly enjoyed the entertainment in the evening and the pub quiz. The staff here go out of their way to make you feel welcome. The only thing i could complain about is the toilets are upstairs, which could be difficult for disabled people. OPther than that.. there are absolutely no complaints at all.

A relaxing atmosphere in a busy food orientated pub aimed at tourists. Real lack of 'locals' but pub full of nice features such as a real fire place (with a real fire!) and lots of beams.

No complaints at all. We ate here on two lunchtimes as a family and were very happy with the food. They also served a good variety of beer.

The pub was busy on both lunchtimes, the atmosphere was freindly and there were a lot of business people eating which is always a good sign in a tourist town.

Right as i work at this pub i feel it is essential to answer the comments left by previous people!

1)It was not the coice of the staff to turn sport off on the tv we were told we had too as it did not fit the image of the pub.
2)ALL of our food is homecooked. We advertise it on menus as homecooked not to homecook the food would be breaking trading standards, i would invite you try our new menu as i did not know that Farmfoods did for example, Braised Belly of Pork, Grilled Gurnard and Chorizo Sauasage or Whole Baby Chicken to name but a few. I would ask anonymous if he is a chef?
3)We have regular drinkers in fact we have alot of regulars some of which are daily drinkers other may be every few days an some that come in the same time every week. We are not AIMED at passing trade but our location just next to York Minster means that we get alot of tourist trade.
4)Yes we are brwery owned but this does not mean that all our beers are the same! Ok we have permanent beers like Fosters, Carlsberg, Stella, Pedigree, Mansfield Cask, Kronenbourg, Staropramen and Strongbow but we have a variety of guest beers which change every 3-5 days.

I invite you to all visit the pub again for good beer and great food in a friendly and relaxed environment!

I went for the home made food, which i suppose is home made if they have a kitchen in FarmFoods.

A larger pub than it appears from the outside. It looks weell maintained & tidy.Would appear to be directed more at the passing trade, than the regulars who previously frequented it during the day.

Bar staff will put sport on the telly but with no sound as this "causes trouble" eh ? A pub that was at it's peak around 5 years ago, but with new owners came a sharp downturn in fortune, not busy and not recommended.

This is certainly a really well located pub, but not one of my favourites in town. Has nice beer on hand-pulled but is brewery run so they are the same all the time, and I found the atmosphere to be somewhat lacking. (Although I must admit that I haven't been in that many times on their theme nights, quiz and curry nights). Perhaps it is time to give this pub another try.
alistair_cross - 31 May 2005 14:13
This pub is one not to be missed the atmosphere is fantastic, great curry night every monday, free quiz every thurs with a gallon of larger/beer to be won, live music every tuesday and freindly bar staff who make you feel welcome. The only downside is certain drinks are expensive!
