As a venue for an evening meal after visiting the nearby Botanical Gardens, the "old world" Chef & Brewer Garden House served a purpose on Saturday without being particularly good. Greene King IPA and Rocking Rudolph were the 2 handpulls; I tried the latter at £4.35 a pint and it was average (as was the festive party menu).

No ciders on my most recent visit. Ales available were Purity Mad Goose, Greene King IPA, Old Speckled Hen (?) and something else which didn't jump out at me as being particularly exciting.

I went for the Mad Goose which I think was £2.73 or £3.73 for the pint.

Service was friendly, as I have always found in here on previous visits.

A nice place to sit and relax with a quiet pint.

Visited again this week. The seasonal cider offering has changed and at the time of my visit was Rosie's Pig, 3.8%, £4.15 per pint. It was very nice. The 6% Thatchers was also still available.

In terms of real ale, of the four pumps, one was off and the others offered Greene King IPA, Wainwright and I think the other was Wadworth 6X. Not a very exciting selection but I was fancying the cider anyway.

Very pleasant large pub on Hagley Road. While the focus may be on dining, the pub is large enough that there is still plenty of seating for drinkers.

At the bar there were four pumps for cask ale, but it was the chalk board advertising the ciders that got my attention. Old Rosie cloudy cider with elderflower (4%) caught my eye, having had regular Old Rosie before thought I would give this one a try. Was not disappointed and despite the higher than expected £4.10 for the pint, it was a lovely drink and I would recommend it. The other cider listed was a Thatchers at 6%. I only stayed for the one pint though.

Chef & Brewer restaurant/pub on one of the main roads out of Birmingham. Whilst primarily aimed at diners, the Backyard Blonde & The Hoard & Sharps Doom Bar. The building is quite large. One area was taken up by a private party and the main part is set out for diners. However, there are a couple of tables near the bar for drinkers. There are many better options in Birmingham for a pint.

Great character pub and lovely large beer garden. Normally have three ales on with one guest ale. Generally well kept lines and knowledgeable bar staff. Good food as well at reasonable prices. Worth popping in for lunch, post-work beers or weekend session!

Nice old building that in a way feels slightly institutional, within which there is a Chef and Brewer pub which means you are going to get two or three ales (including Two Towers brewery which is local to this area) and it is going to be safe enough. Which sometimes as for the current social meetup is what you want.

Average ordinary chef and brewer with decent hand pulled beer

Tried this pub on a fine weekday (lunchtime), as an alternative to the rather corporate atmosphere at the adjacent, but now unrecognisable, Duck.

Extensive garden seating area was well-used on such a fine sunny day, though all diners were plagued by wasps!

There were a couple of decent ales available.

Food menu was fairly varied, but mostly standard chain pub items. Worth noting that a credit tab is not offered for the outside tables - cash at bar only.

Decent pint of Adnams Broadside at a reasonable price. 4 hand pulls, 3in use. I'm sure this used to be the Duck!!

Wasn't expecting much of this place based on the comments on here and it being a Chef and Brewer. But as I was over the road in the hotel thought I'd give it a try. Two Davenport beers on and Hobsons Mild all in good nick and the service was fine. Not a bad place at all.

Worst collection of staff i have ever come across in 1 pub!Rude, ill mannered, slow, scruffy and uncaring, what more can i say.Apart from the overpriced bought in(as was informed by staff) mediocre food.So apparantly my dissapointing meals.6 of them.Wasnt the chefs fault. As six smokers 2 boot,we had no heat in the heated smoking area and no seating. How outcast could we be.No apologies nor san fairy ann from the manager! So we paid our 130 bill and left.Never to return.I hope the directors of these chain pubs read these comments.I wish i had spent my money in tgi fridays where you get what you expect. Thanks for ruining my mothers birthday...........

very large pub, part of a chain. a couple of interesting good value guest beers. overpriced, pretentious, over complicated looking menu. atmosphere of a toby carvery. full of townies and bored looking couples in their 30's.

occaisional blues band on sunday nights.. might be worth going to see. next one is 27th august.
