Cycling past, looked in, as it looked as if it had a good vibe- but offhand service, £4 a pint for poor quality Seafarers, and no acknowledgment on departure, so I won't be returning in a hurry.

I can see a pattern emerging! Politics??

Good theatre, dire pub
SophieN1 - 1 Jun 2011 13:34
Only staff member truly terrible. Asked him whether they sold sparking wine "no" was the answer as he disappeared round the corner only to reappear several minutes later to pick up his mobile phone then clear off again. On return had no idea of who had been waiting an served the pushiest. When we go a glass of red it was stale as the bottle had been open too long. Considering the prices charged I would expect better quality and service. Theatre was good - just go somewhere else for pre and post drinks

A Unique pub that has as much character you would expect from a london pub and a warming atmosphere. Unlike the previous poster, I would say that the welcoming I had by the landlady Lucie was second to none. The food was traditional pub classics with a few south american delights. I had the fish and chips ( which was so fresh) and my partner went for the enchilladas with steak which again I can not fault. Yes the beer prices are not as cheap as your general JD Weather, but there is such a great selection and that with almost 8 different types of gin and whisky. I friendly place with a great atmosphere says it all

The venue is as cold as the staff who finally served us. Drafty and I am not talking about the ales. If serving people is too much effort, get another job. One cut I would welcome from the coalition.

Great pub with a great well maintained selection of ales, great belgian and fruit beer selection and great pub food menu.
I have been here several times now with my children and I'm always remembered by the staff which is nice and I'm always sincerely recommended something to eat by the staff, which never disappoints.
I'd recommend visiting on a sunday afternoon as their roast is first class and very reasonably priced, there is a great selection of boardgames and a very warm welcome. 5/5

DO NOT BOTHER GOING HERE FOR SUNDAY LUNCH - IT IS DIRE.

Pork was pink and undercooked (OK for beef or lamb maybe, but definitely not for pork); potatoes were undercooked inside and burned on the outside (how is that possible?); carrots uncooked (not 'al dente' mind you, just raw and crunchy). Moody waitress took the plates away when we asked to have the meat cooked a little more. It reappeared 10minutes later and was delivered to the table with a sullen expression, complete lack of communication and indifference.

Half-way through eating this wholly uninspiring lunch, a ''pianist'' turned up and started bashing the hell out of an old, barely in-tune upright, to the point that we couldn't hear eachother speak. It was a Sunday lunch, not a jazz/rock festival and I am not an old fogey.

Pay the extra and go to a proper establishment with excellent food and a fantastic selection of beers and wines.......namely The Northgate which is about 150 yards up Southgate Road. At least people answer you when you address them rather than looking at their feet and going off to chat with their colleagues behind the bar while other patrons are clearly waiting to be served.

Crap on too many levels to warrant a return visit.

Seems like a nice pub on arrival, a very good selection of well-kept ale. However the bar staff are terrible - chatting to their mates whilst everyone else waits to be served.

Do yourself a favour and take a ten minute walk down the road to The Eagle.

A great backstreet canalside local that could be under threat from the continued trustafarian invasion of Hackney, were it not for the blessed Credit Crunch. Used to, and may still, run a tough but enjoyable music quiz on monday nights and has a theatre above - always a sign of a varied clientele and a pub worth making the trip to.
BoehmBawerk - 14 Apr 2009 22:09
The staff seem more interested in making this place their own private club. Cliquey and uncomfortable - makes you feel like you've invaded someone's house. Pricey for the area off the beaten path but the beer was ok if not worth the hassle. And patorg1, didn't your mum tell you self praise is no recommendation?

dazzlethepeople, I doubt it! Certainly didnt dazzle me!A drunken irishboy I wanted back for a 2nd shift to recompense for the beers he borrowed without asking after his trial shift, no more to say there really! As for friends Londonrocks and foxylandlass, a private function room for 7hrs, 40 guests and a total spend of less than 5. per head spent on food and drink, to be honest if they do not return it will leave space for a better class of customer. Although I will say we were happy to see them return with the sculpture that they drunkenly stole during the night.
We aim to give good friendly service in a relaxed and quirky enviroment, with a good selection of 6 real ales and value for money, fresh seasonal menu. I hope you can make time to come and see for yourself!! The Sunday roasts are great!!!

Went to the pub for a 30th celebration recently, friends of ours hired the function room upstairs.

On arriving, the pubWent to the pub for a 30th celebration recently, friends of ours hired the function room upstairs.

On arriving, the pub looked great inside and outside. The food I saw being served also looked great. However, we and many others were quite disappointed by the spread that was laid out for the party. A few nachos, manky cut up pizza slices and a huge bowl of hummous.. what the hell??!?!! Never one to complaint about food laid out at parties, but was a bit miffed when the our friends said it was suppose to be 50s worth! There was so little of it, that by the time I went to get some, only the hummous was left. The only thing worth eating was the birthday cake and that was baked and brought in by my friend!!

On a more positive note.. the beers were good and the barman was friendly and polite. Though quite why the drinks were so expensive for a pub which was a bit out the back arse end of nowhere, I dont know! I pay less in the west end!

londonrocks - 23 Oct 2008 11:45
Held a party here recently, nice function room and the barman dedicated to serving us was nice but the owners did us over big time.

Don't waste your money!

Owner agreed a price with food thrown in and then went back on his word. Stereo system was broken and refused to budge the 150 hire cost for the room, instead provided us with travel speakers to play our music through?! It was a party for goodness sake! We had to provide our own laptop and speakers.

Buffet was really poor - unless the food was bought in Harrods we can't see how it cost what it did - afew bits of dry pitta and the worst hummus I've ever tasted. Very bland and truly not worth the money.

There are far more pubs in the area that would provide you with better service and value for money.

foxylondonlass - 23 Oct 2008 11:07
Used to be nice.
davidpfitz - 2 Sep 2008 23:19
Pricey for an off-the-main-track pub - 3.20 for a pint. Can this be right? Chap who I took to be the landlord was a bit odd. I asked directions to another pub and he somewhat forcefully asked if his beer was good. It was but I wanted to move on (and pay less, but was too cowardly to tell him). I thought he could easily get a bit moody if crossed, so I placated him and moved swiftly on.

For barstaff who have to work for inhuman #unts.
I worked in this pub for only 3 days, really liked it, cool staff but the owner, violent . I have never been subjected to verbal abuse like I did tonight. I was left pretty shaken & scared by this man- (as if he deserves that title!) all over an extra bit of cash for extra responsiblity. How many managers have walked out over the past few months Mr owner?? Think it could be a few, as one or 2 of your regulars told me, also said watch your back. Story told eh Knob end. Dont give your money to this @#/t. For the good of all underpaid hardworkers. Had to get this off my mind.

Last laugh.

dazzlethepeople - 6 Jul 2008 03:38
I used to go there regularly in the 90s when the pub had live music, but sadly no longer. Why do so many of those one-time music pubs (the Trolley Stop, the Dove etc.) no longer have live music - has it anything to do with the prohibitive cost of a music licence these days?
MadMick - 1 Jul 2008 15:49
Fairly inoffensive pub with a good range of well kept Fullers beers plus one guest. Seems to house the local clientelle. Has a fairly decent jukebox, DJs on certain nights and a theatre upstairs. Worth a visit if you're in the area.
The_Greene_King - 28 Jan 2008 16:00
Nice enough pub but just when everywhere else nearby seems to be improving their food, here it was over priced and pretty dire. Service was slow and a bit rude. The NorthGate and The Baring are much better these days.
SAA - 18 Oct 2006 16:30
We love this pub, but recently the food has really gone down hill...its just awful! today we tried again and had some soup that was not dissimilar to dishwater. It used to be better we are sure.. bring back the old chef!
jasperplum - 24 Sep 2006 22:32
A cracking pub this. Falls into the 'good honest boozer' category - Quiz nights, juke box, friendly staff etc. A refreshing lack of hoxton/shoreditch/islington ponces, which is remarkable given its location. The food is very average though, im sure it used to be better, maybe im just getting fussier.
mrchips - 10 Aug 2006 11:53
No, this isn't a Fullers pub. It is a free house and part of the small Remarkable Restaurants chain. Serves Fullers ales (incl seasonals) alongside Adnams.
anonymous - 6 Aug 2006 07:59
After the Dove in Bethnal Green this pub was our next stop on the great Regent's Canal Pub Crawl. Quite ordinary Fullers pub with friendly staff and pleasant outdoor seating. We had some decent pints of Chiswick, Discovery and ESB before we continued along the canal.
rune - 5 Aug 2006 13:42
Part of the Remarkable Restaurants (odd name considering they only own pubs?) group along with the Swimmer in Holloway, Sutton Arms in Barbican, Reliance in Shoreditch etc. Great range of beers - Cask - Fullers ESB, Gales HSB, Gales Festival. Some fairly standard belgians in bottles. Litovel Czech lager. Didn't eat but burgers looked huge and will probably try at some stage.

Staff were ok. Punters were ok. Board games and picnic tables ouside. Liked it a lot.
anonymous - 5 Jun 2006 08:56
I agree more with OCW - I did quite like this pub. Kind of old fashioned (which I quite like) but good service (yes really!) and good beer. Doesn't feel like a London pub but that's no bad thing I guess
darlofan - 7 Apr 2006 13:25
The staff can just about tolerate having customers in - pulling pints with no interest, spraying tables as close to the closing bell (11pm) before not after that is. Chairs on tables. Soft seating moved into far flung corners etc etc etc. Just not interested.
anonymous - 1 Apr 2006 15:52
I have been here three times and can say it does what a pub should - there is real ale (well kept), some decent largers and pub food. It also, whilst not being a completely traditional pub, is a bit random, with sculpture and some unusual touches. My wife hates it, but we don't share the same tastes in pubs: I like real pubs, she is more of a polished, modern, bar girl. Unless I've been lucky, the food is fine (if a quid or two a dish too pricey), and beer good to. Staff are a little odd at times, but I've not suffered as badly as anon who posted on 19 Aug 2005

I have got to say that I was really let down by this pub - both service and the food. The evening started with the barmaid completely ignoring me for 10 mins and then when i piped up the courage to shout above the men beside I was told that she was 'going off to collect the glasses'. I should have ended the night there but instead I ordered the food - BIG mistake. 11 for a half cooked bland burger with 8 chips - no really I made a point of counting them! When I complained I was told thatmost people ordered two courses - well I have to say sorry for them. My partner on the other hand tried something which was to resemble chicken and looked liked it had been starved from birth - talking of birth, do yourself a favour abd give this place a wide birth! Oh well there is always the NorthGate....only down the road which is so much more accomodating. Note to the manager - invest in some people skills!

Lovely place. Took a bunch of friends here last night and had great service from Jason the publican. The Fullers IPA was very good, they run a selection of decent strong lagers too. The chef happily knocked up a few bowls of scampi, whitebait, fries etc. for us rather than insisting that we choose main meals from the menu. Well stocked jukebox which was free last night, and we weren't kicked out til midnight. Bonus

Extremely happy that I chose to come here rather than deal with the snooty staff and spend-pressure that I got from a certain organic pub on nearby St.Peters street.
benr - 17 Apr 2005 23:31
I love this very attractive theatre pub. The ales are great, the decor is full of character and the service is extremely friendly. (However, avoid this pub on Thursday nights unless you're oblivious to deafening noise. The bloke who runs the pub quiz insists on shouting into his microphone - ouch!)
foxski - 28 Mar 2005 17:32
Just went down another notch by clearing out the sculpture, inserting booths/pews and generally sterilising it a bit more. Has the theatre shut too?
Where will it end?
anonymous - 27 Mar 2005 14:32
New publican likes to go to bed early so no longer is the Rosie a havened from the 11pm hell of table cleaning spray bottles and dimming lights.
anonymous - 16 Jan 2005 02:13
yeah so it's a bit Hoxton Arts Set but it's a got great old skool interior interspersed with sculpture. Bit pricey but will be popular with the Dove/Royal Inn crowd for sure. Also it's the pub out of 'Happiness' with Paul Whitehouse.
Dan - 6 Sep 2004 12:44
Theatre pub, with lateish license, which first got really really profitable in the 1980s and has maintained a semi full feel ever since a dip during the 90s. Usually no fewer than 2 reasonale real ales.
Food - pricey but OK for the Hoxton arts set maybe.
Art on the walls etc, some for sale which is 'of variable quality'
Bitch points = they spray the tables to make you sterile and leave. Pour real ale with one hand like usikng a bilge pump.
TipTopTommy - 30 Jun 2004 00:12
Excellent pub, good beer, decent pub food including for vegetarians, and a killer pop music quiz on a Monday.
Jon Dennis - 16 Apr 2004 11:04
Really nice pub this. Excellent selection of beer - including some nice Belgian tackle. Don't miss the superb music quiz on Monday nights.
Ant - 23 Jan 2004 14:39
I think this is a lovely pub .. good mix of customers, open late, art work on the walls and a great jukebox
Anne - 30 Oct 2003 20:19
It's a pub/theatre by the canal. There are quality ales and lagers depending on your mood and they're relatively cheap. Great food, great atmosphere, etc... And it's our local.
