user reviews of the Sun, Redhill

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Love the white noise of hundreds of people chatting quietly over a good value, good quality bevys with no music/tv

Shame that over the years they've never managed to remove the beer stick engrained into their tables.

If you read a paper don't expect to walk home with the front page it'll be molecularly fused to the varnish.

Super-glue was a spin-off from the space race. Surely there's a world beating application waiting for the first person to register a patent on the gunk from a Wetherspoon table?

While in rant mode. I might add that they thoughtfully wrap a hygienic serviette around the knife & fork, or spoon - bizarrely all except the actual eating bit which they lay on the sickly, beer swilled table. Nothing kills the appetite for Wetherspoon grub quicker than the leverage needed to prise off the bit of the spoon or fork you are about to put in your mouth from the bacterial syrup that calls the tables home.

Bur if you think the build up on the tables is bad, spare a thought for the floor, they soak the table top in dirty water from an antique floor cloth & squeegee the resulting gunk into the carpet - hugely entertaining to take a house-proud female at 'carpet feeding time' & watch the horror in her face.

Guest ales rather hit and miss. Sometimes up to 4 or 5 on tap, sometimes lucky if there is 1. Could do with better management on this front

Imagine assembling all the crooks, alcoholics, tarts and rogues from the area and incarcerating them in one plca. Yep. The Sun o.k...... but was the beer any good ? I am really not interested in the clientele , what's the beer like ?

Popped in for a quick pint after work. The beer selection was not bad and the pint I had tasted OK. Like a lot of 'Spoons it's a bit soul-less. There were also parts of the pub that didn't smell fresh at all - I guess that's going to be more common now after the smoking ban.

A great barn of a drinking establishment that could be mistaken for the booking hall at Kings Cross with about as much atmosphere. The choice of guest ales was limited to Sheps Spitfire!

I'm afraid this is not one of your better outlets Mr Martin and would have probably been better off left as a Magnet store! On yesterday's showing I won't be rushing back anytime soon.

was in there for 2 minutes on thursday before a massive fight borke out lol not the best advertising but its still a great pub, cheap and relatively quick service when you take into account the amount of people they have to serve

Visited last Saturday lunchtime. Yes, it's a bog standard Wetherspoons, you know what you're getting. However, I didn't find the atmosphere "hostile and edgy" in the slightest - probably it depends when you visit. If you visit on Friday / Saturday evening when the psychos and meatheads are out - then what do you expect ?

I was disappointed with the beer range - Courage Best, Directors, Abbott and Speckled Hen from the "nationals" and only King's Red River ( Horsham Brewery ) from the micros, which was an enjoyable pint with a hint of berries.

It was certainly a cheaper and more enjoyable pint than either of the Youngs beers in the Home Cottage, I have to say.

Wetherspoons pubs for me are generally the Ryanair of pubbing: strong brand and cheap. You know that you are not going to get a unique experience. You know that you will have seen it a million times before even if the pub in question is new to you. But you will use them generally because it gets you where you are going: either on the way to somewhere else or on your way to get trolleyed. That said, I have to say that this Wetherspoons pub offers nothing other than cheap beer. The food is terrible even by Wetherpspoons' standards and the atmosphere is hostile and edgy. Located next to a bookie and over the road from the job centre, it is full of people who seem to spend their entire time in that exact vicinity. Just don't even think about going here. I rate this as 1, just because it is cheap.

went in last sunday. the food was ok but the staff were surly and uninterested. the girl behind the bar was away with the fairies and seemed to have no customer focussed training. still it was cheap beer and food!

Not too bad when last visited on a late weekday afternoon. Two excellent local beers from King's brewery in Horsham. Planned to have a quick pint and head for the station, but stayed for another...

Food is sometimes slow. Busy place and reliable standard in food and beer. Best part, not very smoky. Reminded us a bit of Aussie clubs. And we don't tend to like clubs.

Not perhaps one of JDW's most impressive outlets, either in terms of its service, regular customer base or its architecture. However, it isn't all bad at the Sun. Even if you're a devoted beer lover, there are usually a reasonable selection of ales in good nick to be sampled as in most Wethy's; certainly more than in most other pubs calling themselves free houses in the area. The food is no worse than any other similar pub, and depending on the time of day, the clientele can be surprisingly mixed. Yes, old alcies on cider in the morning and loud boys 'n' girls on alcopops and lager of a weekend evening, but afternoons and some weekday eves can be more moderate! Have a quick one, and move on.

It's a bit vulgar to post comments according to where people should drink depending on what they earn - it's offensive to the people who drink in there, and. No wonder you've remained anonymous...
milkybarnick - 8 Oct 2006 18:38
If you earn more than £10,000 a year, you have no excuse to be drinking in here.

"Yeah, but it's cheap innit?"

So is heroin.
anonymous - 15 Jun 2006 14:40
yeh the sun is crap, full of alcies queing outside at 9 in the morning and are there all day. yeh its cheap, and nasty. wot more can u exspect. i feel for the staff.
anonymous - 5 Jun 2006 04:31
Just say I liked the pub for the range of good cheap beers but had 2 pikey/chav/social security vermin "birds" nick the money from the bottom of the fruit machine when I wonthe jackpot. When I tugged them about it "scar face" Gary and his loser mate threatened me. OK if you can put up with the pond life (not all the clientelle I hasten to add, good guvnor though)
scooterroy - 12 Feb 2006 17:38
Welcome to Redhill. The usual pillocks will be about causing trouble, however the Sun is considerably safer than certain other venues. Busy atmosphere at weekends - the place to hit before Liquid for a few cheap drinks. Cant really knock it compared to everywhere else
mattyj_1987 - 7 Jan 2006 20:19
A rubber stamped JDW. Wide open space. Long bar. Bookcase in one corner to add character. It's not great, but it serves food and beer.
SilkTork - 11 Oct 2005 10:37
Large typical Wetherspoons pub, has all the usual selection of affordable beers & fairly good food. Ive been in this place more times than I care to mention, & despite all the talk of redhill "pikies", "chavs" etc I rarely see that much trouble. Good place to get hammered cheaply before a night out
lone_wolf77 - 15 Sep 2005 21:02
Iz wikkid, innit mayte? Yeah? Wanna shag?

Cheap beer, cheap food.

Cheap women.

Wasn't sure if the menu was for food or the tarts sitting at the table.

And how the hell does a place with 5 bar staff at any given time take so damn long to serve you?

Walk in, spend £10-15 in 30 minutes, go elsewhere.

Or pick a random bird - preferably one with scraped back dyed blonde hair and gold loopy earings - and treat her her like the lump of meat she is.
anonymous - 3 Aug 2005 13:24
Boring pub, no atmosphere, no music and the sound of people talking gets quite annoying! cheap drinks so yeah you can get pissed quick, thats how we get binge drinkers!!
anonymous - 30 May 2005 18:03
Great for throwing meus out of the windows and cheap beer... I was very very drunk
anonymous - 12 May 2005 23:49
Tramps, alcoholics, gypos, and students.

Can knock it - you can get pissed on fifteen quid.
burn - 22 Apr 2005 20:20
One of the better places to go in Redhill. Very much an open area pub which makes for a good atmosphere. Good place to people watch as well
aleman - 21 Mar 2005 15:10
Some characters in here. A bit like the Red Lion in Godalming, but I quite like that
Will2 - 18 Mar 2005 12:45
Well what can i say, the sun, its awsome a good night out and within 2 mins of all the popular redhill night spots cheap wetherspoons prices whenever in in the area its my top pick, i love it.
ballsack - 24 Nov 2004 21:07
It's cheap as chips, the bar staff are ok, and the food ain't bad either (although the service can vary). Hosts a special night for deaf customers every now and then which is a nice touch.
Nick - 14 Oct 2004 19:24
great food
Batman - 17 Jul 2004 17:06
the sun is great. everypone is so friendly, food and drink are good too
jo spencer - k4yl3igh@hotmail.com - 18 May 2004 19:26
Everyone hates it, and evryone still goes there. Do not go if you want a) atmosphere b) class c) nice clientele. however if you wana see loadsa old mates, get battered for 4 quid and then move on to a better place, you will love it. My advice: join the 'Monday Club' - have every drink on their offer list (each 1.09) theres ten of them. You will never get so wasted on a tenner.
Sean - 4 Apr 2004 21:45
Lots and lots of gyppos and kevs. As all other Wetherspoons there's a good selection of food and beverages at reasonable prices. It's nicer than other pubs in Redhill but it's still not a nice place to be unless you like getting into fights. Very busy at weekends. Staff are OK but it can take a while to get served on Fridays and Saturdays.
smuj83 - 19 Mar 2004 12:53
i love the sun!! everyone knows ya name, they sell cheap beer(especially stella) and it is close to one of the souths premiere clubs, the british embassy, what more could you want.

whoever thinks the sun is full of inbreds can answer to me!
i live in redhil and luv it.

the sun's cheap, has a wide range of beers, ales, spirits and girly drinks, plus filling food and quick service
Gary Lager - 10 Jan 2004 16:53
A nice pub, good prices and fiendly staff but they should play music. Good location.
Milja Mannström - 21 Dec 2003 16:29
Beers aren't too bad as they sell so much (the only way pubs in Redhill keep the pipes clean). Shame the clientele are all scum, then. Very good place to witness the phenomenon of guys with girls who are out of their league, and then the guy leaves them on their own while they play on the fruit machines for the whole evening before they go to the Abbott where it's okay for them to scream at each other. BRADLEY YOU CAAAAAANT!
Chris - 14 Aug 2003 13:27
Horrible atmosphere when sober, but its a great place to see old school friends and such, and the drinks are so cheap you can't not go in there on a night out in Redhill(!).

Oh and Curry Club on Thursdays is becoming a religion to me.
Kat - 30 May 2003 12:02
Loads of space is packed on weekends and is popular with us students as it is so cheap. Great warm up before going to The British Embassy Night Club.
Phatboy_Jim - 29 Apr 2003 16:40
Standard Wetherspoons, quite large, no music no atmosphere, cheep booze.
