That should read long may the traditional East End boozer continue.

They had karaoke when we went in late sunday afternoon and the largely older crowd all mingled and knew each other. When a few Chas and Dave numbers were played they lifted the roof.A great laugh and long live the traditional East end pub continue.

Charles Wells branded pub (image 2 appears more current)
No real ale, Bombardier on keg was, I think, £3.60.
Busy pub with a good atmosphere early on a Monday night.

Popped in for a very quick drink on my way to Dagenham. What an amazing pub. Kind of place you read about or see in Eastend TV programs. Loved it. Really friendly and made everybody welcome. This is a real pub, run by real pub folk. If tourists wanted a proper example of a London pub look no further, but I guess tourists swarming all over it would ruin the atmosphere. Shame no real ale, and that's why it loses one point.

Good old fashioned London pub with friendly staff but, and this is a huge but for me, no real ale of any description. Wide choice of lager, draught and bottles so, given the wide choice of bottled ale in supermarkets would it not be possible to stock a small selection?

Being in London in early February of this year, I went to East London for an afternoon, got thirsty from walking, and stumbled upon the Wentworth Arms.
Big luck - jackpot. Authentic as can be, a real London pub which I would have to search for for quite a while in central London.
Friendly and entertaining guests and barkeeper; treat them nicely and they will treat you even nicer, they are honest and down-to-earth folks.
This is a genuine piece of the old working class culture in a neighborhood where you would not expect it to have survived.
No beer on tap but bottled beer is something I can well live with, and also one simple kind of pub grub as solid basis for more beer would make this place above perfect, but I am far from complaining.
If my travel money would not have been limited due to the strong GBP rate I would have stayed there until closing time.
Thanks to the great people there for a great stay with great chats and treating me as part of the family. I will return gladly to this friendly island of genuine Englishness where I already felt at home from the first swig of beer on.

Great East End back street boozer that survived the blitz. No cask, but great atmosphere.

Love this place. Go in here for beers after playing footy down the road. Great pair of ladies behind the bar and the fattest old pussycat wandering around the pub like he owns the place. Excellent selection of food - if you like pork scratchings, scampi fries and crisps. Long may this place thrive.

Another great sunday afternoon spent at the Wentworth. Real people and West Ham supporters to a man (and woman).

Proper old fashioned, east end local. Small and no real ale, but a friendly, proper little pub in an area that has lost so many.

Good old fashioned East End pub. Atmospheric and friendly. We dived in here on a Friday for a chat after deciding that a Westfield to Westfield trip via Ealing Broadway was a bad idea and we needed to chat A Pint for me and wine for the Mrs.

Only have to say Stop watching Eastenders on the telly and come and enjoy the real thing. We left with a smile on our face and were bade a goodnight by staff and locals alike

whilst attending a festival in Victoria park, we stumbled across this local on our way to the tube station. Being from the midlands you hear comments about the "Friendly east end welcome", that Phrase must have originated from this pub. From the moment we walked in off the street we were welcomed with a smile and served in super quick time. The following day we popped in for a quick pint before we went to the festival and once again a warm welcome was afforded to us, on that welcome we decided we would pop in for a couple after the festival and the evening was even better, within 10 minutes we were being treated as regulars by the local patrons and a great night was had by all until unfortunatly we had to depart to catch our tube back to our hotel. Good range of beers on offer with the bombadier being very well kept indeed. If you have to visit mile end please pop into the wentworth and experience a real east end welcome. Cheers guys.

RogerSusie - don't know anything about the people you mention but the pub is definitely still there! Not sure why it's not on Google Earth. I'm relatively new to the place but regulars tell me the current landlady and landlord (who are lovely) have restored it to its former glory!

Hi, Can anyone help me with info. about this pub and the people that worked there.
Richard was the landlord until he died in 1980. It was then run by Colin. I visited the pub for a while in 1981 & 1985 I looked on Google Earth and it looks like the original pub isn't there anymore. Is this right? Anything about the pub or the people from that time would be appreciated.
RogerSusie - 25 Jul 2010 06:07
Excellent if rather small pub that's great for watching West Ham matches. Very friendly locals, never any trouble and a nice pint of Red Stripe too.

the wentworth is a hidden gem-there used to be a pub like this on every corner of the borough 20 years ago-sadly no more as the borough has been effectively ethnically cleansed of its original cockney inhabitants by the councils right on approach to community cohesion-treasure it while it is still here.....
mother123 - 2 Apr 2010 18:04
It amazes me that places like the Wentworth still exist in Tower Hamlets, given the demographic changes the borough has had over the last 20 years, yet it seems to do a very steady trade, with a lot of regulars. As has been noted below, it is a small, old-fashioned drinkers' pub with the east end-obligatory West Ham and boxing photos on the walls, that has two unused handpumps, serves lager and keg Bombardier and shows the football.
Despite the lack of real ale, I rather like the place and hope that it continues to thrive.

I love this pub. I have just gone up with my friend and celebrated our birthdays there. I use to live in the East End and work for tower Hamlets and this was my local and I used it nearly every day. We were treated so well and looked after by the landlord and staff and the local people were kind and friendly. I love how it is and I have always been made welcome and the pub is clean and tidy and nothing is too much trouble. It's how an East End pub should be.I hope It always remains.

Nice East End pub - bit small, and a little bit loud, but that's the East End for you. Very friendly

This is a small single room corner pub. As others have commented, its a Charles Wells House. There were two handpumps on the bar, but neither were in use. The only bitter available was a keg version of Bombardier, which turned out to be undrinkable. The landlord readily refunded my money (there was nothing else that I wanted to drink). This struck me as friendly local; all they need is a decent ale or two to make it a decent pub. Cant see me returning unless they start serving a real ale.
RexRattus - 11 Jul 2009 12:07
This place is pretty much what I would expect from a small east end boozer with its vocal crowd and nice yet authoritative landlady/barmaid.

As previously reported, there is only a standard selection of draught, including Bombardier, as the two hand pumps are unused. I decided upon the Guinness which was well served.

The pub is pretty basic, but there is a dartboard and an outside area for smoking and sitting in the sun. I wasnt that keen with the set up as the railings up each side make this narrow area feel like a cage sandwiched in between some garages and the busy pavement. There were some kids playing football and their ball kept flying over which was irritating a few of the locals and narrowly missed my freshly paid for pint.

This place is ok for a quick drink if meeting people from the nearby tube, but I wouldnt go out of my way to drink here again.

Smallish street-corner community local in a side street just behind Mile End station.

It's a Charles Wells pub, one of a small number of pubs they have held in London for a number of years, before the recent tie up with Youngs. I didn't see any sign of any Youngs beers on my recent visit.

There's 2 handpumps on the bar counter, but they had no pumpclips attached. Given this and comments from previous reviewers, I think we can safely say that this is a real ale free zone. Had the pub been less busy, I might have taken the liberty of asking if real ale was ever available, but it would have been without any real sense of optimism.

Keg Bombardier was available, but lager and Guinness appeared to be the favoured drink of the locals. I stuck to the draught Guinness.

The pub appears to attract a good mix of different age groups and both sexes, if my recent visit was anything to go by.

The pub's interior is clean and basic, but rather characterless. Music from the juke box was too loud, but could be avoided by retreating outside to the small covered smoking area along the side of the pub.

I didn't particularly dislike the pub, but, taking the experience as a whole, I'm inclined to leave this one to the locals next time.

Real, old-fashioned corner local, with a good community atmosphere but without the uncomfortable stares you sometimes get as a visitor to such places. Had to make do with the keg Bombardier, but I suppose you have to try most things once...
rpadam - 22 Jan 2009 22:15
Absolutely loved it on the sadly one occasion I visited (I live the other side of town and was just passing by).

The atmosphere just hits you ay walk through the door it says to me what a good old fashioned boozer is all about.

The only sad thing is there is no real Ale, so I had to drink lager- but that aside I very much look forward to my next visit.

Very much an old style boozer round the corner from Mile End station. Has got a real East End local feel to it, nice old girl behind the bar and chatty locals propping it up. Which after spending most of the last two weeks working in the wilds of the North, was very welcome to this London lad.

As previously stated there is only Bombardier on keg, (I can only imagine how awful that is.) But, being a Wells pub I managed to get Red Stripe on tap which always goes down well.

Interior is small, but cosy and has been given a good clean and a lick of paint recently, which makes for pleasant surroundings. Small but functional beer garden/smokers area to the side.

Would get a higher mark had there been some real beer on offer, but a decent pub all in all.

Dropped in here accidentally at the start of a crawl round these parts ( while we waited for one of our crowd to turn up eventually dragging him off the virtual roulette in Hills up the road ). Wasn't disappointed. We ended up staying for three and there were even free sandwiches. Guinness was excellent. Banter was friendly and hearty. The random music selection on the jukie ranged from classical to hard rock, which provided great entertainment. I think orientbear's review below got it spot on. A good find.

A little gem of a boozer. I first stumbled accross "The Wentworth" after being forced to disembark my central line train by a rather over-zealous "passenger assistant" at Mile End station, apparantly a mans false arm had fallen onto the track (im pleased to report that he wasn't attached to it at the time).

On entering, the pub (situated only a minutes walk from the station) the first thing you notice is how small it is, but dont let this put you off as if anything it adds to the character of the pub.

Served a lovely pint of Guinness by friendly and knowledgeable staff going out there way to enquire after the day you have had without being intrusive.

A handfull of regulars perched up at the bar all with stories to tell only adds to the ambience of the pub. You feel as though you have stepped back into a bygone age when pubs were seen as the centre of the community, such establishments are becoming increasinglky hard to find, especially in London.

If Hogsheads or All Bar One's are places you enjoy frequenting, this is NOT the pub for you.

However, if you enjoy good banter, friendly regulars and staff and a good pint, I would recommend a visit without hesitation before the developers move in and build luxury flats on top of it all in the name of "progress"!

Tucked just round the corner from the tube station, the Wentworth is a smallish, no nonsense, locals corner pub with no glamour or pretensions. As previously mentioned, this is a Wells pub but despite 2 hand pumps, they have no cask ales and keg Bombardier is the only option for bitter drinkers. There is a dart board at one end of the bar (mind the bookshelf below) and a couple of TVs and jukebox. The dcor is plain and simple with polished wooden floor, padded pew seats and plain ceilings / walls. The windows are partly frosted with the pub name picked out and a staircase cuts across the bar that would have originally been divided into a typical public / saloon set up but is now knocked through into one. The beer garden has an interesting bus stop style shelter so smokers should remain dry. The pub may not be anything particularly special but there are far worse places in the area.
RogerB - 14 Sep 2007 11:29
Now reopened with beer garden.
loopzilla - 10 May 2007 10:34
Closed at the moment for a refurb I think, but used to go in after football during the week for a few beers. Have to say I found both the bar staff and the regulars very friendly. Hope it reopens soon because this along with the Archers on Osborne Street and the Royal Oak in Borough, is one of the few proper pubs left.

This pub is not for tourists, women, students, ethnic minorities or anyone that is friendly or open minded.

Went in on a sunday, enquired as to whether lunch was being served. After the barmaid stopped laughing (incidentally she was only woman there) she said no. by this time my friend was being racially abused by one of the ageing locals.

Suffice to say we departed, never to return. My friends and I have redubbed this place 'The Dead Jew'

Turn left out of Mile end station and this is the first pub you will see. keep walking, cross the road and enter mile end park, walk down the toe path and you will come across the palm tree, a much nicer place.
E3_barman - 26 Nov 2006 19:53
Went there on a Wednesday afternoon and was disappointed to find no beers on cask -although this is one of the few Charles Wells pubs in London.
