user reviews of the Sutton Arms, Sutton

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Acceptable establishment, with mediocre and disinterested staff. Survives because it's on the main drag - near shops, bookies and food places.

hoppyal - 14 Dec 2015 14:15

hoppyal - 17 Oct 2015 01:13
quick pint in here last night, always seems a good relaxing bar.good to see one of the best bar staff working here, having years ago worked 2 other high street pubs.always has perfect manners towards the customers!
hoppyal - 20 Jul 2015 13:22
a couple of hours spent in here last night away from the madding crowds.quite a pleasant friendly bar with good service.green king beers so lager for me.shame the becks vier has been taken away.last bell was 12.30,so didn't have to go to the zoo on the hill.
hoppyal - 9 May 2015 14:08
my fav of the pubs in sutton at the moment. friendly staff, good beers, great food, the decor could do with some updating and more frequent t.l.c. is all. mostly decent clientele...nettle is right about guys at the bar (wondering if we are on about the same ones), if they want to leer and comment, they should move onto the moon...unless they've been barred, lol
v.m. - 16 Jan 2015 16:33
Not much of a pub, Greenking struggle to inspire. Bland, dated interior, average choice of ales and larger. Bar staff friendly enough though.
Masterpint47 - 12 Oct 2014 20:54
A disgusting pub that allows men to have a go at young women and staff etc stand aroun laughing about it. Will never go to such a low life pub again. toilets broken and bar dirty

Nettle - 8 Jun 2014 19:36
I know this pub likes to sometimes shut early, but 10 people drinking and that's a few in here for a Monday night and last bell at 10.10,lost income, still went to a better bar.
hoppyal - 5 Nov 2013 01:52
good pint of becks vier in here, but need to stop the short measures.
hoppyal - 29 Jul 2013 12:04
I visited this last night and it was quiet for a Saturday night, it did have Old Speckled Hen on so it was worth going in as this is a favourite of mine. The pub has changed a lot since the last time I was in there, they've taken the TV's out I suppose this is to discourage groups of young lads coming in for the football and to encourage couples and women to come in and create a different atmosphere? They might have gone a bit too far in that direction, could have left the TV's in with the sound off as a half way house measure? Anyway the beer was nice and I'll go back when I'm in the area.
Scotsaledrinker - 9 Jun 2013 11:35
Cockroaches on the bar! And the staff couldn't give a damn.

Avoid.

Very good roast in here yesterday, washed down with nice pint of IPA.
talesofthebar - 5 Nov 2012 15:00
Seems safe enough here now compared to what it was and they have a good range of beers.
makemineacold1 - 26 Jun 2012 13:45
nicebar, good staff, good prices.only downside is green king beers.
hoppyal - 11 Apr 2012 15:33
Not all that, pretty bland & generic place. Not awful just not interesting. Also, seen my fare share of trouble in there.
chalkey79 - 7 Mar 2012 14:54

hoppyal - 15 Nov 2011 14:10
had a couple of pints of becks vier in here last night, like the refurb, beers on ruddles county, abbot and gk ipa,not beers that i drink.going to try the sunday roast sometime,as my mate has tried it a couple of time and says its the best he has ever had in a pub.the friday night disco of 60"S and 70"s music sounds fun.

Tom1503 - 29 Sep 2011 15:25
Nice garden tucked away in the back as well for the ciggies to enjoy a drag (or not).
Tom1503 - 29 Sep 2011 13:21
Went there the day before after a few weeks. They had just had a refurb. Looks great and the wine display is cool. Though notmally not a wine drinker, decided to for the vino and was not disappointed. Food was nice and great value for money and i saw people checking the xmas menu. All in all an enjoyable evening with friendly service.
Tom1503 - 29 Sep 2011 13:01
was in here bank holiday monday with 2 mates, couldnt see why the pub closed at 10pm when there was about 15 people drinking.can see why some sundays they close early ,when no customers there.as my mates dont come out till 9.30 will have to drink elsewhere that stays open later.

I really got to like this pub over the past year or so, but over the past few months it has really started to slide.
I understand a new manager has just taken over and the standards almost immediately slid. From chatting with the regulars at the bar, i learnt that this lady is almost never present, leaving the staff unsupported and stressed.
The pub has a small, friendly staff base who have always been brilliant but since this new lady started, they are left to try and manage the workload of busy Friday and Saturday nights by themselves. Therefore, the pub is no longer neat and tidy, the staff do not have time for pleasantries, and whereas before there would be two or three staff members working particular nights, there is usually now only one.
The outside areas and bathrooms are constantly untidy, the tables are dirty and not cleared and I find it personally quite upsetting to see the once charming youngsters behind the bar looking so harassed and miserable.

On the plus side, the beer is always cold and the outside area is a decent size. Shame about the recent changes, though.

Walking past on saturday, saw a live band playing. Went inside wasn't overly busy but the band very good rocking out good tunes.
Not a bad first visit.
I think the band were called shooter ,I would like to see them again if they have a regular slot.
The people inside were well behaved the bar staff were good a enjoyable night on all counts.

machiavellian - 29 Nov 2010 17:17
was in last night, seems much improved with new landlord.cleaner and becks vier and carling very good(dont do green king ipa).worth going in for a pint more friendly.
anonymous - 19 Oct 2010 14:18
john's left? i'll have to give them another try then! haven't been since summer before this past one..
amous - 27 Sep 2010 12:17
John has left about time to, a few customers going back, good for sports
blackdragon66 - 20 Sep 2010 21:28
I would like to update on this pub... it is a hell hole.
Fart - 29 Jun 2010 11:20
This pub is a shithole, the landlord john is a lardy arse rude arrogant arsewipe of a man, who looks like he needs a bloody good bath. He obviously thinks he is superior to everyone else and spends the whole time ruffing up his customers and kicking them down the high street. The pub itself is dark dingy and needs a good clean, with dirty glasses and dirty tables.

The customers look like they have just been released from the local authority nut house, and ive never seen so many ugly toothless old gits under one roof, the staff arent that much better looking either most have a total lack of charector and brains and i can engage in a more intelligent conversation with my 2 year old daughter.

Overall if you wish to go for a beer catch a coldsore and feel like an film extra in one flew over the cuckoos nest then this place is for you. x
urbana - 2 Jun 2010 23:00
Nothing spectacular. Has a bar, serves beer, no great range.
Empty pop in visits probably work best, if on a crawl because if has to choose just one this wouldn't be too far at the top of the list
the_original_rawnsleys - 12 Mar 2010 10:30
went in the pub the other day ,no one behind the bar the manager talking and did not care about people waiting ,i walked out and will not be going back
makeminealarge1 - 1 Apr 2009 12:20
Greene King IPA & Abbott, kept well enough. Good pub for watching football, several TVs & plenty of different vantage points. Tends to avoid the worst of Sutton's yoof drinking brigade.
Wilson_MacDonald - 10 Apr 2008 17:09
Generally OK. Nothing majorly attractive apart from it being an escape from the hell holes in Sutton on a weekend.
Fart - 30 Jan 2008 11:39
Well looks good from the outside. thats all it has going for it. John the landlord is extremely rude and unhelpful. He likes to stand outside with the bouncers on weekend nights and kick of at anyone he wants to. A-Hole. Had some great barstaff over the years, Fran and Richard come to mind, the others were not that great.
baalaa - 2 Jan 2008 12:38
When it first opened with new manager he couldnt wait to serve you now he is in his circle and doesnt move!! i give him another year.. service way way too slow..
anon0790 - 27 Nov 2007 14:38
Not so sure about tearing the roof off but the band they had in there the other week made me want to tear my ears off and they're not even the worst they've had. What's happened to the pub bands, there used to be some good ones out there but they're missing in action these days.
lazy - 14 Aug 2007 13:43
I used to be the manager of this pub when it was the hogshead dec99'-aug'03. visited with my old supervisor last week and found it to be ok.loads of staff and fairly clean.toilets were untouched by time.
didnt have the 10 casks i used to but still an ok choice for a town centre pub
norton3 - 30 Jul 2007 13:10
Having 'torn the roof off the place' at the weekend, ROAD DOG JACKSON are back at the Sutton Arms on Dec 2nd and also New Years Eve, so book your NYE tickets now.
bassman - 9 Nov 2006 09:24
Do like this pub but why o why did you have to get rid of the excellent Jukebox after the refurb
Britishbeef - 25 Sep 2006 13:47
THIS PUB IS NOW CALLED "THE SUTTON ARMS".

John, the new landlord, once ran 'Scruffy Murphys' just across Sutton High Street. He's given the pub a facelift, brand new decor and it's looking pretty good now.

To launch the pub properly, Saturday 19th August sees ROAD DOG JACKSON play there. This popular 6 piece have been a favourite at the pub for quite a while, and it promises to be hell of a night.
bassman - 29 Jul 2006 10:08
Old beer range gone, now standard Greene King fare - IPA & Speckled Hen. OK, but not enough to draw me there on a regular basis.
Wilson_MacDonald - 9 Jul 2006 15:32
Beer is variable, occasionally good, mostly not. Smokey, tables dirty, sticky, smell of stale beer. Most of the staff are efficient, I wouldn't say freindly. Its dark and cramped, I don't like it.
johnbabercomb - 10 Feb 2006 20:35
Lovely place, only been there a few times.
andrewjames2004 - 30 Dec 2004 18:57
The pub is ok, service is slow and drinks are expensive.

An "OK" place but would not bother too often!
Jo - 30 Jul 2004 14:39
Its very acceptable apart from the lary barman with the skinhead & eyebrow ring with a bad attitude. Busy cleaning when theres a queue of people waiting for a drink and then has a go at me for smoking at the bar! And continued to glare at me all night!
JB - 29 Feb 2004 21:48
Only went to this place once or twice. The downstairs is ratehr cramped. Typical chain pub, not much special there.
JP - 28 Nov 2003 16:39
Polite landlord - friendly 'adult' custom. Very few of Sutton's tattooed lobotomised inbreds drink in here.
Rob - 24 May 2003 09:33
Pretty good place, decent bitter but gets really busy. They have a habit of opening their doors a 11:05 on cold evenings to get rid of people which ticks me off no end. They are generally pretty rude about if as well if challenged and so one has to sit their with coat on and finish pint as slowly as possible.
Dave the bitter drinker - 17 Apr 2003 11:24
Not a bad pub, second only to the Old Bank. Good atmosphere, it IS clean and can get busy, but you'll usually get a seat on a weekend night after about half an hour. Typically frequented by sad'os in their late twenties and thirties...so that suits me!
Steve - 22 Nov 2002 16:58
Dirty pub. Don't put your mobile phone down on the table, it'll never come off again.
mike - 23 Aug 2002 14:18
relaxing. chilled and comfortable and a nice pint.
Li Ali - 4 Jul 2002 13:53
It's a nice pub. Bit too crowded, but what good pup isn't.
