A rather dull and unfriendly pub serving beers both very poorly kept and through tight sparklers. The interior has a very cold feel to it with its new decor. Landlord and lady barely uttered a word of greeting and were more interested in hearing the lawnmower exploits of one of the locals.

Really recommend the Oak. Food is fantastic (especially the steak), the beers etc on tap are well maintained with a great selection for all. Location is great - next to the canal when the weather is fine. Popular with both the locals and visitors to the area. Definitely worth a visit!

I visited this pub yesterday (May Day Holiday)with my wife, mother and three year old grandaughter for lunch. It is a pub my wife and I used regularly in the 1970's. Although much smarter now it has lost none of its charm. We were disappointed by the limited lunchtime menu but delighted with the quality and size of portions we received. I also enjoyed the real alefrom the local Breconshire Brewery. Friendly welcoming staff, good food and fine ales - we will be back.

I go to Pencelli Castle every year and the Royal Oak every night I'm there. The landlord (Trevor I think) is very friendly as another person has mentioned. Always good for a bit of friendly English v Welsh banter! It's great for all ages and families too. The garden is a stepped grassed terrace which goes up to the canal and is great in summer.

The food is excellent and the cask ale, Reverend James, is superb. I suppose the only thing you could wish for are cushions on the chairs (does that mean I spend too much time there?!)

All in all, a great pub.

Nice bar staff: very friendly and good attitude. Beer well kept, if a little cold. Suffers from the usual Welsh problem as far as I can see of sparklers on all the taps: but were perfectly happy to take the off if asked. Good plain food, and very handy for the excellent campsite up the road.
