user reviews of the Cock and Bull, Sutton

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Sad to hear Fullers are closing this pub down on November 14th.Always been a well run place with decent beer.
talesofthebar - 30 Oct 2020 13:02
Excellent range of Fullers beers all well kept. A Spacious wine barish feel to it this pub. I love Fuller beers so always gravitate here on my way home from work. Good election of lager here too. Near to the station.

still Sutton"s number 1 pub, nice pints of olivers island, great service.the current manager has made this place even better,if that's possible, well done!
hoppyal - 11 Oct 2016 13:27
Why the band saturday nights? I have been to quieter Motorhead gigs. Beer still good!
pwilkins - 9 Nov 2015 15:41
popped in for an excellent pint of fullers olivers island, new beer for me.not many in but the tango gang were in and always a pleasure to chat to.must visit more regular as suttons best high street pub.hoping the long serving guy gets the managers job,as he has been brilliant in here for years.
hoppyal - 24 Aug 2015 14:13
I really like this pub, great location, drinks were great at a reasonable price and staff were friendly. Definitely recommend this to everyone. Will be coming back soon. Jordan

haven't been in for ages, but pleased to say the adnams ghost ship was excellent.
hoppyal - 8 Jan 2015 01:42
decent enough Fullers beer and live bands on a Saturday night makes this well worth a visit
Wilson_MacDonald - 30 Nov 2014 21:18
was in last night for end of the beer festival, enjoyed surrey hills, shere drop and greensands ipa.also ok apple blossom beer.beer was running out faster than I could order it!good helpful staff member, well done the C&B.
hoppyal - 17 Mar 2014 17:02

Nice pub, and good beer, good entertainment, shame about the manager!

Lovely pub and boys.
Super staff,fab pride.
rainbowian - 6 Oct 2013 14:38
met mate in here tonight, good too see so many beers on.had a pint of surrey hills shere drop, one of my favorites, bit warm but very tasty.wild river from the bar was fantastic.well done to the staff here.still have a few beers tomorrow if anyone is interested.
hoppyal - 1 Jul 2013 01:38
Lovely time in here yesterday.
Beer festival on,nice beer.
Good music too.
rainbowian - 29 Jun 2013 12:28
Always visit this pub when I'm in Sutton. You can't go wrong with Fullers pubs, always well run establishments with well kept ales. Recommended.
Scotsaledrinker - 9 Jun 2013 11:40
Clean and friendly pub.Wild river beer was excellent yesterday.Expensive, but all fullers pubs are.
talesofthebar - 8 Jun 2013 17:05
I don't think I'd ever been to Sutton town centre before Sunday evening and this pub wouldn't tempt me back! It's a large Fullers pub on a prominent corner which has next to no customers on my visit, when all other Sutton pubs were busy. Beers on were Fullers London Pride, ESB & Chiswick & Clarence & Frederick's Golden Ale. At least they had a guest and the interior had a few interesting knick knacks to keep the mind occupied. But it could just do with some more customers. Maybe it's busier on other nights.
blue_scrumpy - 21 May 2013 20:21
good beer & live music on a Saturday night, great combination
Wilson_MacDonald - 6 May 2013 22:18
as the last poster wilko ,my good mate says best pub around high street.the new brit hop was very good tonight.land lady and staff do a great job.
hoppyal - 16 Apr 2013 01:06
Best pub in Sutton High Street area for a decent pint.
pwilkins - 12 Apr 2013 12:35
chiswick as good as it always is,long live the cock and bull.
anonymous - 11 Mar 2013 02:01
good pint of clarence and frederick golden ale in here last night.bit expensive at £3.85.why do the tables get repositioned so much?
anonymous - 4 Dec 2012 14:25
well done fullers, love the wild river,a very, very double hoppy pale ale.4.5%.it is 3.80,but its hoppy.lovely blonde barmaid last couple of nights, and nice atmosphere.
hoppyal - 4 Jul 2012 01:14
had very good chiswick in here last night, made up for there being no discovery on.since the new landlady took over would think the profits have gone up considerably.as i only use this place the early part of the week, havent found it to be that much rougher.still get a lot off old bill drinking here.must say the bubbly new barmaid is a good addition to the pub.(where is the town house?)
hoppyal - 26 Jun 2012 14:11
I was in on saturday afternoon with the wife, she made me leave after our first drink. It's a lot rougher than it was but I feel it's been going that way for a while. She normally would of have had a meal when we are here but wasn't interested this visit. We nipped over to The Town House and had a bit their, it was OK but not great.
makemineacold1 - 26 Jun 2012 13:40

i hate plastic glasses, realy spoils the discovery.know its police orders for football days, but after 10 pm when the matches are over, and there only a few customers in.
hoppyal - 12 Jun 2012 01:07
had some good pints of discovery in here this week.ive seen 4 new staff this week, who seem to be ok.would like a full pint for 3.60.staff need to be stronger on who they let in,the 3 blokes,1 with paint all over his clothes that were loud and just been refused in o"neills on monday night, wouldnt of got as far as the bar not long ago.
hoppyal - 23 May 2012 12:58
still a great pint of chiswick, only about a dozen pple in but still remains good and 1 of my favorite pubs in sutton, despite the prices.missed 1 0f my favorite ex-oneills bands last night as well.
hoppyal - 14 May 2012 02:11
CALLED IN LAST NIGHT AND HAD A VERY ENJOYABLE EVENING.
I AGREE THAT IT IS EXSPENSIVE COMPAIRED WITH OTHE PUBS.
cockneypaul - 4 May 2012 13:13
CALLED IN YESTERDAY AND PUB IS STILL KEPT VERY CLEAN AND HAD NICE FOOD AND WINE.
WHILST IT IS A BIT EXSPENSIVE ITS WELL WORTH THE EXTRA MONEY FOR SUCH QUALITY.
cockneypaul - 25 Apr 2012 15:04
my comment got removed, funny that, let's try again: since the new management, the prices have gone up, customer service has gone down and staff turnover is rising- coincidence? i don't think so.
amous - 14 Apr 2012 09:43
hadnt been in here for 6 weeks,so gave it a try on sunday and had good pint of chiswick.both staff on were with the previous manager.the cock and bull has always been an expensive pub, dont blame the manager, its fullers who set the prices.having said that i do see old customers of the cock and bull drinking in cheaper places, all bar one (becks vier is 3.30 )and sutton arms(becks vier 3.20 carling 3)much cheaper than cock and bull.might have more competition when oneills reopens as a more upmarket bar.
hoppyal - 11 Apr 2012 15:20
What's happened here, it's so expensive you need a mortgage to buy a beer. This was once a place to have a good meal and drink at but now I find the customers rough and with sky high prices taboot. Seems most of the old staff have left or have been squeezed out. It's a shame as this place was once one of the better pubs of Sutton, now well I'm not so sure.

makemineacold1 - 10 Apr 2012 10:20
Very nice lunch in here today.
washed down with very nice ESB,
As always service and cleaness first class.
Love the smoking area out the back.
rainbowian - 9 Mar 2012 14:44
was in tonight, my London Pride was nice though the pub was very quiet
makemineacold1 - 13 Feb 2012 00:43
Guinness was nice, and my new babes pride was nice as well, loved the candles on the tables, made it a very romantic feeling.Man behind the bar very cute.Nice to have a very gay friendly pub in sutton.
rainbowian - 3 Feb 2012 14:54
was in last night,a lot busier than it used to be for a monday, with the new quiz night starting.chiswick is only 2.50 in january,as my mate cockneypaul says, the new manager is doing a great job.
anonymous - 10 Jan 2012 14:59
enjoyed it in here good boozer
hardman - 8 Jan 2012 22:30
HOPPYALS CRISPS WERE OUT OF DATE OMG WHAT NEXT.
I SAY CALL THE POLICE HOPPYAL THATS VERY BAD INDEED ONE THINKS.
SERIOUSLY THOUGH NEW MANAGER IS REALLY GREAT.
cockneypaul - 4 Jan 2012 12:04
was in last night, had a great pint of chiswick.a few people in as well.new landlady must be doing well.think the dates on the crisps need checking,as the honey roasted ham and cranberry i brought, had a sell by date of 30-11-11,so over month out of date.
anonymous - 3 Jan 2012 15:56
like this pub, very nice fullers beer, nice friendly staff, very clean.nice place to take a date on,very gay friendly.
anonymous - 27 Dec 2011 15:23
been in about 4 times since new manager took over, still seems to be as good as ever in here.mind my beer has gone up 10p,chiswick now 3.25,hate to think how much the esb and guinness is now.
anonymous - 22 Dec 2011 14:10
The Scarlet pimpernel has gone , New manager a vast improvement
Adinfinitim - 22 Dec 2011 10:48
HAD FOOD ON MONDAY EVENING AS USUAL IT WAS EXCELLENT.
CONGRATS TO NEW MANAGER SHES DOING A GREAT JOB.
cockneypaul - 14 Dec 2011 16:44
I was in last night and the place doesn't seemed to have changed at all other than I would agree with the previous posts that the feeling with the loss of some staff has had a big effect. It did not seem a personnable as it had done prior, normally I would stay for a few but the wife and I left after one for The Windsor. My Pride was good.
makemineacold1 - 6 Dec 2011 07:59
agree with cockey paul, danni is missed big time.chiswick was great tonight.

anonymous - 5 Dec 2011 01:48
NEW LANDLADY IS VERY NICE BUT ITS SUCH A SHAME DANNI HAS GONE.
cockneypaul - 2 Dec 2011 17:09
Recently moved to Sutton and this seems the nicest pub on the High St. Big arm chairs and lots of space. Nice atmosphere and the food looks good although I haven't eaten here yet. Friendly, efficient staff each time I've visited.

Is it really necessary that the manger be in the bar and speak to each customer? Isn't it their job to make sure the place can run well with or without them being there? As the recent comments seem to rate this above the overall feel of the pub I thought I'd air my view.
Loki - 7 Nov 2011 16:54
I agree with the last poster, It's been a good pub to come to for the last few years. The ales are most of the time kept in top condition., Sutton as we all know unfortunetly does not have much to offer but Fuller's have done something great with this place. I feel they will make sure to keep it as it is, hopefully. It's hard to find somewhere comfortable in this town and my personal opinion is this is one of the few places. If the landlord is leaving well i hope it stays as it is.
makemineacold1 - 4 Nov 2011 21:53
on now is bengal lancer, mighty atom and black cab stout, all very good, hope the chiswick comes back.as for the manager, ive been told he is leaving at the end of month and a new girl will be taking his place.hope she keeps it up to the standard we are used to.good luck.
anonymous - 3 Nov 2011 12:27
YOU CHATTED TO LANDLORD YOU WERE VERY LUCKY BECAUSE HES NEVER THERE
cockneypaul - 2 Nov 2011 14:49
What an amzing pub this has become! Very pleasantly surprised by how well it's kept - looks as good as new and by far the best pub in Sutton. I had the Hobgoblin then the London Porter on draught (never seen that before, anywhere!) and both were kept brilliantly. My wife had three different red wines and loved them all. Meals served with smiley and helpful staff, Pie was delicious, Pork Belly even more so and served promptly. Chatted to landlord and landlady - both chatty, genuine and helpful. Haven't been here in years due to leaving area but I'd make a point of coming back, if not just for the table football! Top marks all round!
caskaleking - 27 Oct 2011 16:24
Have just read some of the previous reviews an I just don't undestand. This is one of the if not the best pub in the area. I have often been here and got a lovely friendly welcome from both the managers and the staff. The food and drinks are always top quality, and to top it all they are always doing something different and interesting. Keep up the good work
sheepinthecity - 19 Oct 2011 11:34
This place and All Bar One are forever packed out, I love their Honeydew and warm welcome everytime. It's unfortunate that racists are allowed on this website but that's freedom of speech I suppose. A lovely pub with great very friendly staff no matter where they are from...
whathappenedtopubs10 - 14 Oct 2011 20:56
Up to a month ago i would have agreed with your comment gwilkins, it is now a pretty poor show in there, boss never works, happy to let foreigners run it,try the other pubs, much more fun
stealthy - 5 Oct 2011 20:55
Had a great couple of pints of the red fox, as my original comment some time ago, can be inconsistent with quality of beer. I would say this is now the best pub in Sutton.
pwilkins - 3 Oct 2011 12:20
chiswick was great last nite, also tried the red fox after barmaid recommended it,was very good.well done to the barman for chucking the local nutter out.
anonymous - 6 Sep 2011 16:22
Explain where the Stella has gone
stealthy - 24 Aug 2011 20:50
makemineacold, make mine an aussie, fuck off
lippy - 9 Aug 2011 21:20
The staff in here have always been hard working and helpful, it's a very clean pub and I've never had any problems with beer. The type of place you'd want to bring the family to for a good pub lunch. Good alround considering where it is.
makemineacold1 - 9 Aug 2011 13:03
seems like a fun pub
stealthy - 8 Aug 2011 21:07
It's a website about beer. I love beer and pubs. Just had a pint of Discovery and am now wondering why I didn't try it before.
RamblinDen - 7 Aug 2011 18:21
well said ramblinden, lets get away from the rampton inmates.

anonymous - 7 Aug 2011 12:38
Love the Cock. Easily the best boozer at the top end of Sutton. Chiswick and Pride are super though the lager can be a bit flat at times. Clean, tidy and much less rowdy than the it's surroundings. Well up to Fuller's usual standards. A flat calm mill pond in a stormy sea.
RamblinDen - 7 Aug 2011 10:04
And there's table footy too!.
RamblinDen - 2 Aug 2011 08:01
spoke to who i thought was grapefruit down grapes wetherspoons and she says its not her posting.so sounds like someone with a grudge against c&b and her.
anonymous - 28 Jul 2011 11:49
I had a grapefruit the other day that was bitter too.
Nuffsaid - 28 Jul 2011 10:28
Grapefruit we would all prefer to go to O'Neils on a Saturday night than here, yeh right if you have a frigging death wish. Each to their own old boy, each to their own. Strange your still "popping in" even though all your previous slanderous comments have been removed I see, pathetic..
whathappenedtopubs10 - 25 Jun 2011 14:14
Popped in for a drink on Saturday, what has happened to this pub ? lost a lot of custom, going downhill rapidly, carling was rubbish, went to ONeills and it was full up and rocking,,great night.
grapefruit - 22 Jun 2011 12:49
was in here sunday and was served a pint of chiswick, which seemed cloudy, waited to see if it would settle which it didnt, had a taste, was just about to take back when the beautiful bulgarian bar girl(shift manager) came running over to tell me i had end of barrel.she even went down in to cellar to pour me one from new barrel.which tasted perfect, great service looking at lippy, grapefruit, profile,i never take comments serious, when they only ever posted 1 comment or comments about 1 pub only.
anonymous - 27 May 2011 15:38
I'm really quite surprised with some of the previous comments, I've been drinking here for a few years and have never to be honest been dissapointed. The ales are always tip top as is the food, it's the only non restaurant the my wife will eat at. My daughter meets up with her friends here at the weekend if she's out in Sutton as she feels it's an extremely safe place for them. The staff have always been great in the past and I haven't noticed anything different recently. Has been and I personnaly feel is without a doubt one of the best pubs in the town.
makemineacold1 - 20 May 2011 13:00
was in last night, had a very good pint of chiswick.always such a clean place, not many customers, but it was a sunday night.wonder if the prices put some people off, noticed a group that were always in now use all bar one.
anonymous - 28 Mar 2011 16:14
It's great to see the Bar Leeches seemed to have been moved on at last from this lovely pub, very much a food place now full of the local office workers. It seems to stand out above the Robin Hood since their decline of mangement recently which in a way is unfortunate as Sutton needs to hold on to it's safe, well run pubs. Good food but pretty expensive for dinks.
makemineacold1 - 25 Mar 2011 18:54
Never had a decent pint of Chiswick in here. It's allways nearly flat.
rpf1955 - 6 Mar 2011 09:44
Generally a nice pub, bar staff can be a bit off sometimes but quite a friendly place in general. Can happily sit in here on a lazy Sunday afternoon.
B1g_Chunks - 23 Feb 2011 16:54
I never used to particularly like the C&B as I ound it a little small at the ront o the bar and they oten never used to show the ootball om the big screen. However, I have been back a ew times recently as I discovered that it had a dart board stuck away in the top corner.

Me and a few friends often enjoy a game and we have started to use the pub again on a Saturday afternoon. It isnt often busy, it has the Sky Sports Soccer Staurday on the smaller screens and the service is superb with the Latvian barman refilling our glasses and bringing them over with just a nod of the head towards the bar. Excellent servce, clean toilets, decent beer.

Just on the darts theme.......Please please please replace the old board. Too many bounceouts for our liking.
Plod666 - 18 Jan 2011 15:19
Had a beer in here yesterday quality wasnt the best.
This pub is always so clean other pubs need to take note.
rogcs47 - 11 Jan 2011 21:21
Is it just me or does "billtheboozer's" review not seem a tad out of sorts of this place, compared to everyone elses reviews. How can everyone be complimenting both staff and pub so highly for a lifetime then this guy comes along and recieves such awful treatment. To back-up staff at the C&B I've been drinking their for over the last 4 years and have always been given a lovely welcome. Very odd this person states it's a badly managed pub but everyone else classes it as one of the best run pubs in Sutton. Staff of the C&B I would ignore his review. Someone who thinks The New Town is a great pub but your place is no good has serious alternative motives, me wonders are they connected somehow to said pub. Keep up the good work, this place is a diamond within the rough, well done!!
makemineacold1 - 27 Dec 2010 15:36
I like this pub, it is a bit devoid of atmosphere (maybe due to its size) but the staff are great. Very efficient and friendly. The pub in itself is extremely clean. Only downside is the toilets being upstairs.
Smoking area out the back which is nicely sheltered and the clientele generally keep to them selves.
Not very busy most times i have been there but very comfortable so if you want to go for a quiet few drinks this is one of the best places in sutton.
Captainshoe - 30 Nov 2010 13:05
MAGDA WAS GREAT SHE WILL BE SADLY MISSED
anonymous - 17 Nov 2010 21:08
nice place for a quiet drink, with low lighting and candles.sorry to see magda who has worked here over 6 years leaving, best barmaid a pub could wish for good luck and thanks .last year has seen big turnaround of staff, but the beer is still good.
anonymous - 9 Nov 2010 13:40
Good boozer that keeps the rif-raf out
lippy - 28 Oct 2010 05:50
chiswick last nite was superb.staff are improving.still the best pub in high street.some strange characters(regulars) stand around bar.
anonymous - 18 Oct 2010 14:54
A High Street pub without the usual chavness of a High Street pub. Conveniently located to Sutton train station this pub offers much. Good beer, excellent food, friendly and helpful staff make for a pub that caters for a wide and varied demographic.

A good atmosphere, background music, sport on the big screens. This is a pub you feel safe to be in, and happy to return to.

I for one seriously cannot understand the low rating. The only thing stopping a 10/10 rating is the hike to the toilets. Beer, food and service are positives that far outweigh this though.
davidjrandall - 17 Oct 2010 17:24
I like the pub, and the staff have always been decent.
It's just the beer quality, that at times, lets them down.
pwilkins - 8 Jul 2010 12:26
been using this place about 6 years.fullers beers well kept, love the chiswick when on,discovery back on for summer.they had some very good barstaff come and go,lets hope the new ones keep the chavs and idiots out, as well as old staff did.
anonymous - 3 Jul 2010 12:00
A good pub to visit or meet-up at. Unecessary 21s policy though.
Fart - 29 Jun 2010 11:19
hadn't been in for years, my brother and i popped in for a beer and a burger. was very impressed by the quality of the ale and the food. at the same time, the service was excellent. they came up and offered drinks while we were eating which we could pay for on the way out. was a good touch, and made us feel trusted, at home and comfortable. i would urge you to check this pub out again, i am glad i did and this is now my favourite pub on the high street.
jimclark - 26 Nov 2009 19:44
This pub gets a remarkably low rating, which is not justified. The beer is decent, the food is a cut above the usual pub fare, the staff are friendly, and bye and large the customers are not the worst. The general atmosphere of the pub is lively and there's a good mixture of ages, sexes, and social types. OK, it's suprising no-one's killed themselves falling down the stairs to the toilets, but I can put up with that (so long as it's not me).
Marlow - 17 Jan 2009 19:00
Sometimes beer good, sometimes beer indifferent.
pwilkins - 22 Dec 2008 15:14
Nice pint in this pub, and the foood is good too. Only thing is the hike to the loos.
baldyboy - 20 Aug 2008 02:55
I like this pub and contributors who allege anywhere has a lack of atmophere should examine their own personality... I am warmimg to it over the Old Bank which seems to value Chelsea fans for televised games over friendly groups wanting a few beers and a chat
rob307 - 14 Feb 2008 01:26
I agree with the comment on the stairs to the loos, but the loos are decent compared to some places.

Wouldn't really use this as my local as not enough atmosphere and very little if no live music.

Safe enough for lone females though.
susanstitches - 11 Nov 2007 13:56
i have only been in here in the afternoon midweek and it was practically empty by then. however, i found it was very comfortable settings for a pub and the staff seemed pleasant. nice selection of beers, but i would not like to be here in the evenings or weekends when it get very busy, because i can see it getting overcrowded and too smoky.
jim.bob - 23 Apr 2007 23:19
Nothing much wrong with this place really it just seems to be suffering from too much competition. It doesn't even seem to get that busy on Big football match days. It's hard to put your finger on why it seems to have died off. Maybe most people have the same attitude as me, you tend to just walk past it on the way to somehwere else without really giving any thought to going in. Saying that i did venture in a few weeks back and didn't mind it, the staff were welcoming and the beer was OK. We only stayed for one though as there didn't seem to be a reason to stay. I actually think that one day the number of pubs in Sutton will begin to lessen and I'd probably put this at the top of the list to close first, pity as there are worse pubs in Sutton, trouble is there's also better ones
lazy - 18 Dec 2006 12:08
I agree with morchuboo, it is a nice enough place, nothing special.

However, this is a glowing recommendation when you compare it to most of Sutton High Street's other pubs (I use the world 'pubs' here in the loosest possible sense).

If you really are unfortunate enough to find yourself in Sutton on a Friday or Saturday night, then head here. It might just save you from getting robbed/stabbed/the clap.

And as bionicdog alludes, the stairs to the toilet are very steep, and get steeper as the night progresses.
parkhillian - 17 Nov 2006 16:24
Only go to the toilet if you are an accomplished mountaineer.
bionicdog - 7 Aug 2006 16:07
Nice enough place, nothing special. They have the normal fullers range , but the beer always tastes a bit funny. Since the refurb its nicer inside, especially round the back bit, but the rest is a bit too open. Shame the beer is dodgy because the food is excellent.
morchuboo - 19 Sep 2005 14:03
Better since the refurb but as mentioned before the beer can be rather rough. Will do for a no hassle quick drink
BB71 - 1 Aug 2005 13:02
This place is a lovely pub and looks great since the refurb.

It's a shame the beer mings, the staff are rude and the manager appears to know very little about running a pub. This place should be so much more popular and it would be with decent managment.
anonymous - 7 Jun 2005 14:42
Don't go very much these days, too many 'lads' trying to look hard. As an ex-serviceman I can't stomach kids walking around thinking they're tough. Life is for peace and love.

The beer won't win any awards, but most people over the weekend just want to get bladdered.

I'll go back from time to time as it's not too bad generally.
Argonaut - 11 Feb 2005 10:42
Good staff, good atmosphere. Stairs are weird to climb when drunk. Adds to the fun...
Andrew - 19 Jan 2004 20:55
I have only been into this pub on a Tuesday evening specifically for the "Karaoke". I find it to be a very friendly place, including the bar & door staff. as with any pub you get back what you give,so if they are rude to you, it is only because you have been ruder to them. The karaoke is excellent by the way. I usually drink in my local club & so I am accustomed to cheaper prices but the prices in here did not strike me as being out of the ordinary for a pub.
chris - 25 Aug 2003 12:02
I was working there in 1997. Best time i've ever had. Greetings to all folks!!!
Hermann the German - 5 Oct 2002 11:43
Had a St Trinians type thing last night, lots of girls dressed up the blokes were a bit boring though, fantastic licensee new to pub, guarantees to get it going.
