please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

This place is a disgrace!

I went yesterday for lunch with a friend and my father. We ordered 1 BLT and 2 cheddar and mushroom sandwiches and the waiter was less than alert or switched on for his shift. A different lady arrived with the food 15 minutes later and handed us 2 BLTs and 1 Goats Cheese Sandwich, we were in a hurry so I said don't worry we will eat it as we don't have much time. I female waitress apologized but basically slagged off her male waiter, not very professional. I then asked for some vinegar and the waiter brought it to me, unfortunately after I had used it my friend pointed out that the vinegar had a at least 10 dead flies in the bottom, how pleasant!

My chips were ruined and only one of us ate what we ordered and the waitress gave me a 25% discount off the food, I was not impressed!

I will never go to Clapham North again, the place is a disgrace.

Came in over the weekend with a group of friends and had an amazing time.
Food was awesome and good drinks too.
As afternoon turned into evening the place turned extremly busy, with live music to.
i will be going back.

Lose the laminated menus, it's not a good look!

No prizes for imagination in terms of pub name. Unless of course it was situated in Berlin.
Standard aspirational Clapham outfit but not anything outstanding. The staff were fine and the food was ok if steep in price as you might expect.

Nothing dynamic or impressive. Standard in a Clapham kind of way.

A Saturday afternoon visit here was a decent experience, if nothing to write home about.
There has been alot of comments complaining about staff here, but they were very friendly on my visit, was waiting at the bar, they were serving someone else, they told me they'd be straight with me (customer acknowledgement), then said they'd take me order from the table when said wanted food. Pretty Aussie staff as well.
Decent range of largers on tap.
Wasn't all that busy on my visit, the sun was out but it wasn't the hottest day. Interior is nice and snug.
The only thing im comment on is had a breakfast meal, it was rather expensive for what it was, but for this type of pub, its too be expected. Nice though.
the_original_rawnsleys - 10 Mar 2010 11:23
rude staff and bad management

This is a very dimly lit pub that has a standard and premium draught selection (no ale) and I counted five plasma screens stretching the length of the bar area which is split into two. Food is served, but most of the other customers seemed to be gathering for the start of the football which was being shown on Sky Sports and Id imagine that the loud dance music would be turned off at kick off.

Maybe I was lucky as, contrary to more recent reviews, I was served a decent pint of Guinness by a friendly barman. Whilst supping my pint I noticed a sign that advertises the closing times as 11pm everyday except Friday and Saturday which are 2am, so handy for a late drink if in the area.

This isnt really my sort of pub as it was full of twenty-somethings drinking premium lager, but I would pop back in if using the tube station again.

Run down by some blind idiots now. Back to times Bedford used to be. Owner, dps, mngt do not care about anything else than green and themselves. Not worth going, stay away or hit the high st. Clapham bars were more than Wetherspoon a while ago.
tomribs - 16 Dec 2009 03:22
Never did reviews before but this day was too much! I used to work in a bar myself!
Never herd anything like this before! Blonde e european chick is a mean racist + terrible bar staff.
At first my boyfriend tried to order drinks for us at the bar by himself (he's from india).
He heard a sick comment from this (russian maybe) girl: "to busy for you nigg..."
We got very confused. Lost! What the hell is this?! We stayed. Wanted to sort things out.
Waited for a while and saw same girl giving drinks to her frends for free! Few OZs at the bar.
She didn't even realise we were still there waiting for service and watching her.
After next 20 minutes we finaly got our drinks. Mixed up! (something we did not order)
When we tried to explain she couldn't say a word in english.
We did ask for a manager.
Waited for another 20 minutes. Noone turned up!
Left.
Whoever is responsible for recriuting staff? Find another job!
CLAPHAM NORTH: Not a place where i want to go out again. Never! We wont come back.
Going down clapham north! Sorry!

Oh and the only reason I'm not there tonight is because I'm not well...:(
jade27 - 5 Dec 2009 01:04
The Clapham North from personal experience of my friends and I attending there since Summer 08 is great. It's one of our favourite places to go in Clapham.

The comments from some on here reflect impatience and are obviously socialising in the wrong area, not themselves on the right wavelength to enoy such a free spirited and relaxed atmosphere.

Clapham is a cool, trendy place to be, and 'The North' as we refer to it, is one that is easy going, fun to be in and the music is great.
Whether it be light funky house and party music on a Friday late and Saturday, to live acts on a Friday earlier evening and Sunday Evening...

You can wear a pair of jeans or a little black dress, who cares, nobody judges and everyone has a great time.

The food is very good, and service too with that,, Sunday Brunch is a very good time to go after your Saturday night for Eggs Benedict with Salmon...to die for...yummy :)

The staff someone wrote that they are arrogant??? Not true, they are very busy...This is a popular place to be, so if those who commented are reading, maybe you should go and sit in an old man's pub and pick the beer you want and have a chat with the local barstaff if that's your idea of a night out...for everyone else who is up for a good laugh a good old dance and the surrounding of plenty of eye candy, then this is the place to be...

I think if you're a people's person you will naturally get on with people here, there's no trouble and you can guarantee whether you turn up alone as a local, you'll make friends from all over...

As for the better service in Moscow comment? It's obvious that this person is from there and just doesn't have the personality or ability to fit in that we have here in the UK...

Oh and there are loads of Aussies and Kiwi's...they are great too :)
jade27 - 5 Dec 2009 01:00
This bar opposite Clapham North tube is one of the darkest establishments I've ever visited; Everyone should be told to wear bright colours so you can distinguish from one another. There is no ale but a reasonable selection of decent lagers but this place is more notable for its regular Thursday evening Parmo slot and its for this in which our party (featuring two smoggies) chose to partake. It was pretty good, although the novelty aside there's little memorable about this place.
ChrisP87 - 13 Nov 2009 11:50
chopper1 is spot on

great location but run by fools
mikeh1 - 11 Aug 2009 20:37
Rude arrogant staff.... I've had better service in Moscow

I've come arcoss some appalling customer service in my time but these idiots take the cake

I came to this dump on Saturday to watch the 2nd Lions test. I usally avoid clapham like the plauge because of the pretentious little turds that frequent the place so I was off to a bad start anyway. I arrived just in time for kick off and made may way through the crowd to the bar. I was served ( for want of a better word) by an angry little man who must of been rehersing for a part in a movie about Mussolini.

As I had no cash on me this rodent abruptly informed me that if I wanted to use my card it was a 10 pound minimum and I had to run a tab. This was fine by me as I just wanted to see the game drink my 10quids worth and get out of the place

so far, so not so good..... I made my way back to a vantage point and started to enjoy my pint and watch the game but it was not to be.

As the place was packed the only position I could find happned to be near a fire exit that was been used as a thoroughfare by people to come in and out of the pub. The litle rodent came past and told me to keep the door shut as he had the aircon on. At first I was a bit shocked as I wasn't sure if this was a request or an order. Being a paying customer I would of hoped that it was a request so I gave him the benifit of the doubt and shut the door

Needles to say that only a few seconds later the door was opened again by patrons moving in and out of the pub... So there I was watching the game minding my own bussiness when along come this little rodent and accused me of opening the door and odrering me to keep it shut.. After recovering from the shock I explained to him that it wasn't me and it's not my job to monitor your fire exits. He then made some kind of bizzare gesture with his hands up against his lips ( like he was impersonating a duck) and told me to get out! ha ha hilarious

I'd lost paitence with with him by now so I told him to go away and leave me alone ( it was a bit more coulorful than that but you get the idea)

I thought the matter was finshed with until I went to get anothr drink and was infomed by his side kick (sideshow bob) That I was no longer welcome. He actulally had no idea of waht had happened, so I asked the little shit to come over to the bar and explain himself. He obviously realised that he was being a prat and wouldn't come over and explain to sideshow bob as to why I was no longer welcome

By this time i'd had enough laughs for the day so I decdied to take my custom elsewhere

All in all an unpleasant experience in this place but I manged to make my frinds laugh when I told them about it. They have all promised me to go there and open the fire exits....just for kicks

Chopper1 - 29 Jun 2009 09:04
I seem to remember this being a rather dingy pub a number of years back but it's been given the Clapham bar treatment. That said it is not over the top at all and I found the interior rather comfortable and the eclectic set of tables well suited to the interior. It's clearly set up for sport watching as there are a number of flat screen TVs dotted around the walls and fliers around the pub confirm this.

On a Friday afternoon the bar was naturally quiet but I could quite easily imagine it being deeply unpleasant on Friday nights or sporting Saturday afternoons
murgatroyd - 28 Jun 2009 17:37
Avoid Avoid Avoid

I went here for the first time about two weeks ago. While it is nicely decorated, the staff are very very rude. I ordered 3 drinks - one of which was a Guiness. I paid while waiting for the Guiness to settle. A minute later he finished pouring the drink and as I was walking away with the drinks he said rudely "do you have a tab", I told him no and amazingly he said "drinks in here are not free"...

I told him I had paid and he gave the most disgusting look, one could imagine. He checked the till receipts and without apology, started to serve the next customer...

Plenty of other good places in the area - so I would check them out first...
DB17 - 7 Jun 2009 10:55
Went on Sunday for a quiet drink and had a very enjoyable day, considering my head was pounding from a very heavy Saturday night.

Very pleasant!

Good bar, I often pop for a few cheeky vinos on the way home from the station.

Three years on, thought I'd post again. Another Saturday night, another birthday and.... nothing's changed really. Pretty rammed, same clientele, staff were working hard and fast, but struggled to clear the four-deep crowd waiting to be served. Music still pretty average and way too loud.

I was a bit disappointed as I'd expected it to move with the times a bit. I had a good time, but I wouldn't' choose to go there.
jonnymusic - 2 Jan 2009 17:52
I must say, after reading some of these comments, im astounded, albeit they were posted a year ago, I went in for a friend's birthday party a couple of weekends ago and I absolutely loved it. The staff were helpful, efficient and very easy on the eye, the music was great (Dj with Live bongo player playing a cool selection of non cheesy but fun music) and the mojitos were fantastic. . I will definitely be going back for my birthday party (it helps that its a stumble from the tube station as well)
janeysouth - 4 Jun 2008 18:14
Went on a Saturday night for a friend's bday - absolutely rammed but I have no idea why. Wine list ordinary, beers non existant - just identikit Eurolagers and Guinness. 9 quid for a pint and a glass of wine, and the food service stopped at 8pm. It may well be OK outside of weekends but a bland and soulless experience on a Saturday night.
anonymous - 4 Nov 2007 10:37
Variable. Avoid on a Friday/Saturday night unless pre-Infernos geezers are your thing!
Food can be ok, but have had poor service and luke warm food on one or two occasions. Thursday nights are pretty good- good music. Packed when matches are on. Seating outside, although right on the main road.
Nice G&T.
edaj - 13 Aug 2007 15:43
The managers are helpful but the rest of the staff are awful and certainly the door staff....not all its cracked up to be!
anonymous - 20 Jul 2007 19:17
doorstaff are rude and arrogant here. wa asked for id and when it was shown they still refused me for no reason need to sort it out
anonymous - 28 May 2007 10:50
Had a decent bottle of red, as yes the beers are somewhat lacking. A good place to chill with a paper on a Sunday afternoon. Some decks behind the bar. As Mooky says it's all about the urban brown loungy thing.
OldRogue - 28 Dec 2006 14:00
refurb is ACE. If you like the urban loungy brown thing, more space somehow and I hear on the grapevine (hopbush?) that they are opening an auspicious resto here soon. Top for watching footy; now if they could just improve the beers...
mooky - 7 Nov 2006 13:29
places like this arn't usually my cup of tea but I had a good time in here. I found it a bit pricey, but I expected it to be before I entered. Music was good and Bombay Sapphire as thier house gin. I wouldn't make this my local but I'd come back again as its nice for a change.
ratfink - 2 Sep 2006 13:26
I have been going into this bar for over a year now and never get bored! This bar has everything you need, cool people, cool music and best of all cool drinks, they ahve a really good cocktail and wine menu as well as a load of great lagers! I would highly recommend this place to everyone and anyone!!!
zosh - 30 Jul 2006 23:27
Just moved to the area and rate The Clapham North as my fav bar so far. It may not be the fanciest but the cocktails are well made and every time i go in there seem to meet new friends. Staff are extremely efficient and always willing to help.

flakster - 22 May 2006 23:27
It may not have a manufactured chain feeling but it still has a rather false atrificial 'rah' find of feeling thats certainly not authentic.
yt22uk - 18 May 2006 23:53
I've been here a few times and also have mixed feelings about the place. I went for a Sunday roast a few weeks ago and found the food not that great and over priced. In general though it's above average and at least it doesn't have that manufactured chain feeling about it.
TechnoBimbo - 20 Apr 2006 11:53
I have mixed feelings about this place they bend over backwards to help you with getting a table reserved for a friday night and I think the idea of buying a bottle of vodka or gin etc is differnt (sorry im from kent originally we dont have clever ideas like that where im from)and the food is very good for a pub but I always feel the staff let down the place slightly not a bad watering hole.
juzza - 6 Apr 2006 09:58
One my locals and a fairly good bar. Beer selection is limited, Guinness tasted a tad odd last time. Good vibey, young and trendy atmosphere let down by well meaning but erratic service. Clapham High St area is blessed with a few outdoorsy pubs and this is one the best
mooky - 28 Mar 2006 16:11
all in all not a bad little venue for beer and brunch, spent a saturday night in there a couple of months ago, the place was buzzing enough and not TOO jam packed although the bar staff could have been a little quicker -
(not helped by the guy leaning on the bar in front of dropping his rather fermented guts - which may say more about the clientele than the place its-self?)

usual complaints about ridiculous noise levels, and subsequent inability to converse.
Nosowner - 13 Mar 2006 14:44
Comments on here are harsh, I think. Great, albeit loud and trendy, atmosphere on weekends, and on summer nights when they open the front up to let the air in. Opens late. Nonetheless slightly "up itself" - the kind of place you'd see all the desperately trendy people you knew at college, hanging out by the bar in their pulling shirts, frowning their prettiest, coolest frowns. Worth considering if you're on a night out but nobody's idea of a local.
Monters - 22 Jan 2006 19:04
Nice little pub - typical Clapham trendies hang-out, but don't let that put you off!
lwk198 - 25 Sep 2005 21:57
Usual identikit of a refurbished pub -faux leather chairs, candles, tinny DJ toons blaring out, drink prices a bit more than usual, etc. Not too bad. seems that Clapham North is now more Clapham than Stockwell. If it gets too much, seek refuge (and conversation level volume) in The Landor down the road
redrocket - 24 Aug 2005 21:04
Haven't been for a while, but had a great night on Saturday. We were just planning to go for a few drinks and then carry on, but ended up staying all night! I found the staff really friendly and served us really quickly.

Miss_B - 22 Aug 2005 10:42
I was here with a dozen mates last Saturday. I expected the worst after reading previous comments, but it wasn't that bad. We'd reserved a table which the friendly manager cleared for us without causing a fuss. The two bar staff I ordered from were patient and efficient despite it being pretty busy.

It's a young, local crowd up for a good time. Biggest down side is the music - dull house played at ear-bleeding volume. Maybe I'm getting old, but I like to be able to talk to people in a bar.

Bouncers seemed okay, prices weren't exorbitant, didn't try the food. Prefer the Railway and the Falcon, but this place is okay.
jonnymusic - 22 Aug 2005 10:36
all i can say is that i enjoyed an evening there with some of my girlfriends last night to catch up on all th gossip....the cocktails were great, the seats were very comfy and the waitress service meant that we didnt have to move all night...i assume that they may well have changed some of their staff because the ones i saw were v friendly and very pleasing to the eye too.....not sure how much i enjoyed the hangover today...
rooster - 19 Aug 2005 19:12
I live down this way and often frequent the place on a Saturday morning for Breakfast. Their breakfasts are the best in Clapham.

However, I would never again go there on a Saturday night. Not only was one of the bar staff obviously high and incoherent, but I went outside to meet a friend after being inside for 5 minutes, when I went through the main doors the bouncer charged me again to get in. He said he had no recollection of me entering, despite only 5 minutes passing.

The music is rubbish as well.
beckyboo - 19 Aug 2005 16:23
I agree, nice fit out. But bar staff are so rude. When we were overcharged on our bar tab, the manager refused to believe us. We had to argue for 20mins to get him to take off the drinks that weren't ours!!! A note to potential drinkers - don't leave your card behind the bar.
note to the owner - sack all your staff they are usless!
boozer27 - 12 Aug 2005 15:38
Dont bother! The staff are barely competent and rude. The chef cant even cook a burger - it was literally raw inside. Not rare - RAW! Plenty of other places in Clapham that deserve your custom.
anonymous - 18 Apr 2005 10:16
We visited this place on Saturday night and the attitude of the bar staff was a disgrace, as was the fact that they were unable to provide cold beer.

They literally ran out of cold bottles (it was room temperature) by around 10pm and the staff literally laughed in my face when I asked them for cold beer (of any brand - I wasn't fussy) - they informed me that I was the only one who had complained and that I should drink draught lager. Given I was buying 6 beers in a busy pub when they had no trays, this was a little tricky.

This is the sort of place that will always be full because it is opposite a tube and open late - that's about all it's got going for it.
anonymous - 24 Jan 2005 10:47
A shocking display of dire customer service by the staff earlier this year!

a friend booked a table at this venue for food. The menu was ok, fairly limited and pricey for what you got - Roughly 9 quid for a burger which leaves you feeling ill (only decent place for good burgers in Clapham is the Gourmet Burger Kitchen, Northcote Road). The food took over an hour to arrive and then the bill payer was charged twice for the same thing.

Didn't visit this place prior to the refurb, but my guess is the staff forgot everything they knew while the place was shut!
anonymous - 17 Jan 2005 12:05
Lived down that way for years and still drink out that way. This place has been rebranded and now has a late license - otherwise I think it would be empty. Doorstaff are a bit hit and miss sometimes and it can take years to get served because the barstaff are too busy dancing and juggling with the bottles!
Al - 17 Sep 2004 15:32
Nice refurb, but shame about the doorstaff... Visited on Friday night and doormen and little rude blokey collecting the money seemed more intent on letting in their mates than anyone in the queue.

Jim - 4 Sep 2004 12:00
A fantastic place to visit - its got eveything and it was well worth the 3 month wait. Update your photo, the new Clapham North is (thankfully) nothing like the Bedford Arms
Andy - clapham - 26 Jul 2004 23:59
Absolutely useless. A lovely re-furb, sure, but what's the point when the staff are so pathetic? There were more staff than customers when I went in. I stood at the bar for a good 15 minutes and wasn't acknowledged by a single one of them. I promptly left (without having had a drink) and went to the ever friendly FALCON. Buck your ideas up - there are plenty of alternatives in Clapham!!! I was thinking about visiting again on a Saturday with friends but will avoid the place for a while now...
Chris - 6 Jul 2004 17:04
Shame about the name change!! Clapham North how original!! Not as good for football as it used to be, no big screen! Great Sunday lunch though and same chilled out atmosphere.
Kate - 6 Jul 2004 16:33
very nice work, much better than it was after reopening a couple of week ago big chairs make you feel like a 6 year old
matt - 17 Jun 2004 11:32
Now called the Clapham North, total revamp, must have spend thousands. Now a Fab place to go, cocktails and music great. Now open until 2am Fri & Sat. Update your photo!
debbie - 9 Jun 2004 14:53
quality funky house mashed up with some fantstic old school flavas.Friendly staff, nice atmosphere,a man called jay really shows us why its claphams best kept secret! See you saturday!!!
ben essex - 26 Oct 2003 17:58
Excellent funky house DJs on the weekends when it's open late.

very nice, pleasant pub where you can have a drink with mates after work. reasonably priced drinks

Is this the same pub building as the one next to the library in 1826?

Sorry, I mean restaurants !!!
anonymous - 19 Sep 2002 13:42
Music/sport on lots of Tv's including a large projector Tv. Street tables too. A lovely pint of Stella opposite Clapham North tube station and at the start of a very busy High St full of pubs and restuarants.
