The whole building where this pub was located is now under redevelopment. It would appear that the Cartoonist is no more.

Arrived on Saturday afternoon at 1pm after the Lord Mayor's Parade. Doors locked, nothing to suggest the pub was shut on Saturdays, people inside gave a thumbs down. Well that makes two of us. Fortunately we got a warm welcome at the Old Red Cow.

Finally got around to visiting this pub.

I found it a bit bland and didn't like the choice of music.

Wouldn't rush back.

I really enjoy this pub.Its not mutch to look at but the landlord and his staff try there best. The atmosphere is always good and its clean.None stop 80.s music makes it a fantastic place to unwind.Always serves great beer, best real ale in the area.

I have been using this pub for about three months now.I pop in for lunch two or three times a week, basic food but cheap and tasty, very good Harveys Bitter.I also visit with a few friends on a friday night.Great mixture of customers with a happy party atmosphere.Very good all round pub.

Attended a party at The Cartoonist, nice pub, great beers, good atmosphere.

A bit suspicious looking at the previous 6 or 7 glowing reviews of this pub.

None of the 7 reviewers have ever commented on any other pub except this one.

Nevertheless I will give it a try next week.

"Your Local Pub In the City" That's how Landlord Graham Brown wants his customers to think about this great pub. Being a commuter from the countryside, I know the benefits of having a decent regular local and I can see this place becoming more and more people's local pub in the city what with the friendly atmosphere, unpretentious proper pub grub and extensive beverage selection. I most enjoyed the comedy night and look forward to the planned karioke nights with some work colleagues. Someone in the office said this pub used to be really run down, but Graham and his team have made a real effort to smarten the place up and perfect the beer. Definately the place to be for a jug of pimms on a friday afternoon catching the last of the sun in the large outside area!

I was looking for a venue of my thirtieth birthday party and a colleague suggested The Cartoonist Pub. The pub has a downstairs room available for private hire. Its quite a big place with its own bar. I ordered a buffet for my guests. All in all it was very successful and remarkable value considering the location in the centre of the City.

If you want to hold a private party in the centre of London, I would highly recommend this place.

I recently popped into The Cartoonist for the first time for a quick pint after work and stayed until closing time. A very friendly pub with a good atmosphere and quality beer. I got talking to the licensee, Graham. Hes been in the pub trade since the age of 14, his first job collecting glasses. About a year ago he retired and moved to Sussex but got bored and missed London. He took on The Cartoonist as one last challenge. Colleagues have told me that under the previous management it had been run down and neglected.

He does food at lunchtime but is closed weekends. I definitely recommend this pub.

I love this pub. I had a business meeting with a colleague from G Sachs and he suggested we meet at The Cartoonist just around the corner from his office. I arrived early and was made most welcome by a very charming barman. I find most pubs a bit intimidating for a woman on her own, but not this one.

There is a very nice selection of wine and the food was excellent.

The Cartoonist, until recently, had been a poorly run pub with little to recommend it. It has now been taken over by a Publican of 30 years experience. The result is a much improved pub.

The beer is well cared for and excellent. A particular novelty is the availability of Bankss Bitter on tap, a beer brewed in Wolverhampton I havent seen before in London. Also available is Harveys Sussex Best Bitter and Marstons Pedigree.

A good selection of food is on offer and priced to make it good value for the money.

The bar area is spacious with an additional basement bar and seating areas outside.

Graham, the publican, is friendly and welcoming.

A great pub, destined to get even better.

Haven't been to this pub for a long time, but as i was passing last weekand i couldn't help but notice that the old place had under gone a bit of a face lift.
Nipped in for a beer and couldn't belive the change, the landlord was very freindly and extremely helpful, the bar was clean and tidy and the pint of Harveys was very good indeed. i would recommend this pub to anybody who is passing. keep up the good work.

I am visiting from Canada and Afghanistan for a week and just happened to come across this quaint little pub. I had a Fosters which was perfectly chilled. The landlord came over and introduced himself to me and we had a few minutes to chat before he started his setup for the evening. I would highly recommend this pub to anyone visiting the area or working nearby.

We found this pub by mistake today and was made to feell welcome from the moment we went in. The bar staff were friendly and the landlord introduced himself. Food was lovely and so im told the beer was good too !
Will definately go back when were in the area :)

I have been working in an office next to this pub for the last 2 years. But stopped using it because it was run down in all areas. Having seen the sign under new ownership I decided to give it another try. To my delight the atmosphere was warm and welcoming. The Harveys Bitter tasted really good. I returned the following day for a pint with lunch, the food was more than satisfactory and realistically priced. Well done The Cartoonist I will become a regular.

As others have noted, a notice outside advertises a change of management here. This can only be a good thing, as the pub was consistently mediocre under the old management and probably needs a good kick up the backside. Initial signs somewhat promising: I think there is one more real ale than there was previously (although I didn't sample so can't speak for the quality, and note that there used to be a real problem here with bad quality ale), the food menu looks (a bit) better than the previous food menu, and the new manager is quite visible in the bar. They've also got rid of the ludicrous and very misplaced dance music which used to be played at top volume at lunchtimes. I will raise this from a 3/10 to a 4/10 and hope to be able to raise that score again in due course.

Mixed feelings about this place. The Adnams was possibly being served before it was conditioned properly but the landlord seems to be making an effort and wants to make a few changes to the pub. The friendly barmaid was very chatty and seemed to enjoy working here. Will be worth a visit again soon.

Whilst in the midst of a pub crawl we stumbled across this place and thought we'd pop in to break up the walk between pubs. The pub itself was clean, the bar staff very friendly and considering it's in the heart of the capital the prices weren't that bad at all.

As a group we were a little rowdy to which across came the landlord, who turned out to be an extremely nice gentleman who was willing to join in the banter and had no qualms about the noise level as it was all harmless fun. He informed us that he had just taken over at The Cartoonist a few weeks prior to our chance encounter and had made a few changes to the old place.

Those who have been before and had bad things to say, I would suggest you take it into your heart and give The Cartoonist one more chance before writting the old girl off. We had a thoroughly good albeit brief stint as customers and would definately return to the place!!

I sometimes go here for a lunchtime beer to get away from the hussle and bussle of work, nice friendly bar staff always willing to chat and have a laugh with you.

I tryed a pint of Kronenburg while in there, the Kronenburg was nice and chilled to perfection and has to be one of the best pints I've had in London so I had another.

Nice quiet pub ideal for lunch and a nice pint on your own or with someone else, it has a nice beer garden surround.

A grubby little pub with shockingly expensive soft drinks. I was charged 2.10 for a half pint of lemonade, and this was from a dispenser, not even an individual bottle!! I am still stunned, and will certainly not be returning in a hurry.
qwerty72 - 31 Oct 2009 14:23
Fair dos, there are better pubs in this part of town. The beer is a little pricey, and I expect this is in order to survive on the sliver of Mon-Fri business this place shaves off its more cosmopolitan neighbours. However, the staff are generally friendly and I've had some nice pints of various incarnations of Adnams in here. They also show football and the pub is rarely populated densely enough to obscure your view...

A funny place, all in all , but not all bad.
gcc24 - 12 Apr 2009 20:08
The guys that run this place are really nice and they love what they do. It has picked up a bit recently with the smoking ban. I think they could do a lot more with the space, it is in a great location for city workers!

This pub is very expensive 3.80 for a pint of lager but the staff were nice and friendly
morganspice - 13 Sep 2008 18:47
I brought around 8 workmates here this afternoon for a pint, some pool and a decent lunch. What I got was a rude joke at my expense from the old barman, an additional 50p charge because I used my debit card, a gassy pint and an overpriced burger which was clearly bought from a supermarket.

I have been in worse pubs (can't recall them at the moment) and I, or the people I brought along will ever be back.

Just not a good pub.
jeepster - 5 Jan 2007 14:25
Because it was only early i thought a pint of lager shandy was a good idea. How wrong can you be? I was charged the price of a pint of lager plus 90p for a splash of lemonade!
Airwolf - 16 Jun 2005 22:52
good bar staff, beer fine but overpriced, small and can be very overcrowded at times
Venom - 2 Jan 2005 22:51
Weak, weak pub - beer distinctly mediocre, outlandishly expensive, dingy and characterless inside. Go elsewhere.
grecian - 22 Dec 2003 15:58
went for lunch and a pint. Good Adnams and wall entertainment but food very poor value
lout_from_the_lane - 28 Nov 2003 15:05
This pub is round the corner from my office and is good for a quick drink after work, especially in the summer as it's one of the few pubs in the area with space to sit outside. Not really that great otherwise but there's not much better in the area either.

Dark Yes, but it is worth looking at the walls, I didn't rate the beer much (S&N) last time I was there but it is worth visiting on a crawl.
Tim - 28 Jul 2003 13:28
Dark, dindgy, mostly underground. A pathetic excuse for a pub. Stuck right in the middle of 'city pub' territory.
