Still closed. But I believe the sign was still there.

I used to drink in this pub quite regularly but hadn't been for a couple of years now. It seems to be geared up for sports fans with several large screen TV's about the place. It was quite busy for a lunchtime with people eating and they have a large courtyard area outside for smokers. I had a couple of pints of the Nethergate Umbel Magna, they had 2 other real ales on. Very pleasant pub, probably catering more for the younger drinkers and sports fans . Certainly worth a visit if in this part of the town though.

Three ales, all non-Greene King which in theory is a plus for a pub in East Anglia. However the two I tried (Wherry and Old Speckled Hen) didn't taste right. Slightly Wetherspoon-ish: not off, but not how they should be either.
One of the bar staff was courteous enough, but the other was very unfriendly and spoilt the visit for me. Clean, sterile, slightly old fashioned (in a 1980s sense) interior. Quiet, on a Sunday mid-afternoon, but the barman and the few lager-quaffing casuals watching the big screen made for a slightly edgy atmosphere. Not worth going out of your way for.

Yes it has a big telly and a quiz / fruit machine but this pub is just 200 yards from the Greene King brewery and has the marvellous nerve to serve not just Adnams but a couple of guest ales too - when we visited there were 2 crackers from the local Nethergate brewery in Clare. So impressed were we with 1 of these that we returned later in the evening to try it again. Thursday night at 10 p.m. and no sign of the oiks or idiots referred to by other reviewers...

Plush quiet lounge, traditional bar,off sales in between - just right ! - BUT THAT WAS IN 1969 , when we used to help 'do the bottles' (replace stock from cellar) after school and in the summer holidays. Now it has a dirty great plasma screen and is full of idiots. Is this really what people want??

Beer well-kept and served, staff friendly. That said, there is an atmosphere of unease about the place, not helped by the presence of 'lively' children.

as someone else has said before...best at lunchtime.
Adnams ales, well presented.

There are some interesting comments here about the pub's weekend personality loud and oiky, apparently. My only visit here was lunchtime on a spring day, mid-week, and it was a pleasant place. The garden/yard is a good spot to sit when the weather's fine and the interior is cool and quiet. The real ale was excellent in range and quality bliss in a town that's virtually owned by Greene King. Visited 4/07.

Beer wise this place is good, as mentioned in other reviews a good choice and well kept. Downside was the over zealous staff that managed to ID myself and my partner in crime whilst we were both 25 and not looking like kids.

Used enjoy long Saturday afternoons in this boozer back in the late 90's. The bar manager and door staff are all linked by radio on the weekend. If this setup is necessary then it's not the sort of place I wish to frequent. Pity bout the provincial behavior.

An excellent range of beers but the volume of the music from the video jukebox makes this more a preclub pub than a comfortable boozer. Four real ale taps deliver well-kept beers.
