Popped in on a Wednesday night and quite busy with the running club post workout drink. Comfortable place and good beer. Triple FFF - Alton Pride and Timothy Taylor - Landlord on my visit. Bar staff very friendly.

Visited here on a quiet lunchtime in January. Beer very good with a fine range. Food excellent - good value for money. Barman was extremely attentive - served us at our table not just for food but for drinks as well.

Outside was bleak but inside was conviviality itself. They didn't even comment on our muddy boots.

Me and my wife have promised to ourselves to never set foot in this place few years back but after listening to recommendations from our friends we've decided to give the horse & groom another chance and we are very pleased that we did. We had a very enjoyable evening indeed. Food was brilliant, very well cooked and service was friendly and welcoming.
We will be back soon!

Came here with the father in law and wife for a meal and some beers. Truly fabulous value food, decent prices and very tasty indeed. Not too fancy ingredients but very well cooked, got the feeling there is a creative chef back there. Beer was good too - nice couple of ales on offer. The place wasn't packed but it was busy and there was good atmosphere. The Horse and Groom is certainly on better form these days.

Nice welcome, and comfortable pub.

Fish and chips at this pub is not only very well priced, it's also far nicer than anything you'd get from pubs charging literally twice as much.

Can't comment on the beer, as I was only on the boring stuff. I think the rating on this pub must relate to a previous ownership as they are a million miles from our experience.

I definitely agree with last comment. We went for a family dinner on Wednesday evening and place was packed. We had a great time and food was simply out of this world.

Both my friend and I enjoyed this pub. It was a good atmosphere, with friendly people. We went on Saturday evening. It was very busy inside the pub and outside in the beer garden, yet it wasn't unpleasant. My friend had organic lamb stew for about 7, which was lovely. I had rump of lamb which was cooked to order for 11 (delicious). There was a live band which started after we had eaten and was unobtrusive. Deserts were about 4, my friend had mocha cheesecake and icecream which was homemade and very light.

Nice evening :)

Recent changes to the interior have split the pub into smaller areas which helps a lot with atmosphere. We had two good meals at reasonable prices (local lamb and veggie option) and came away feeling we'd got good value. Only slight gripe would be only a single ale on tap on this visit. I wouldn't disagree with previous posters but in my view it is improving.

Same owners as the red lion. So two pubs i will no longer be seen in again
regulardrinker10 - 10 Feb 2010 16:57
still no atmosphere, over priced food and trying to be something it never will be, more like a waiting room than a pub.

This pub changed hands towards the end of the kids summer holidays to two blokes named Craig And marsel who are both very friendly. i took my family for a meal there and they have great quality food at great prices we had a three course meal and i had half a pint because i was driving. The ale i had was courage best and it was good, bordering on excellent. The food i could tell was fresh produce, probably homemade and all in all it was a great night out.

Went on the spur of the moment late one Sunday afternoon. Initially apprehensive as I do not like Sunday pub roasts. However, the barman promised I would enjoy this roast. Very pleasently surpirsed. The starter was fab, and the beef had no fat and was pink in the middle. Did not have a pudding as trying to watch waist but did have plenty of free coffee refills.
As it was late on a Sunday there was not much atmosphere and only two people in. We did wonder if word had just not yet got around as to what a pleasent find this is.

Pretty disappointing in all honesty - ale (6X) was weak, the hastily set-up TV was fuzzy and there was no real atmosphere. Wasn't keen on the interior either, felt like something out of a Magnet showroom.

Barman seemed like a nice guy and the garden looked OK, but I found little reason to return in the near future.

pub now reopened with new friendly manager and bar staff. 6x and bombader now on draught, great position with car park opposite and large garden for the children.

Called in mid-afternoon last week for a pint and a bowl of soup. Licensee could not have been more helpful. This place has a long and eventful history - I hope it has a healthy future.

Once again - closed. The Horse and Groom is becoming more of a problem pub.

Needs to focus on the food inorder to make sure people keep coming back.
chassey - 12 Nov 2007 15:23
temperarily CLOSED at the moment.
tadley_musher - 8 Nov 2007 00:18
Re-opened early 2007 under new management. Beer is good - often Spitfire , Black Sheep and London Pride on, plus the usual bottled girls drinks. Drink prices moderate to slightly pricey. When first opened did so with a pretty dodgy chef and high (at least as high as London) food prices. Now though a much better Chef and better priced menu. Decor was redone by new manager and has not yet really 'worn in' but its getting there. Atmosphere along similar lines right now as the clientele returns after a pretty long closure, but again its building back up. Great position with the park opposite and a large garden. Ideal on a sunny weekend.

new manager, very friendly, quiz nights on thursdays and a very good pint of spitfire
tadley_musher - 8 Mar 2007 20:42
Currently under new management and atmosphere completely different from previously.Nice, warm atmosphere for a good night out with your partner/spouse or just a good couple of drinks with friends.Introducing good quality food from the 2nd April 2007 and the beer garden are being done up to suit the young families in the area.Children welcome with parents till 8p.m.

This pub is the opposite of everything that a good old fashioned village pub should be. Fake decor, and an atmosphere more Starbucks than Pub. I also found the landlord rude, got kicked out of the eating area because we were not eating lunch, even though only one other table was occupied, we only wanted to be there because the other side of the pub was smokey. Tried outside, but not impressed. Did not stay long after that...
AJM - 10 Sep 2006 20:12
I agree with Jude_The_Obscure. The landlord is very friendly and always makes the effort to make people feel welcome. I can't believe people would think he was rude! The pub is also loads better since it was refitted. One of the better pubs in the area with a good selection of ales and wine and really good food.
loimen - 11 Mar 2006 14:23
Disagree with the comments about the landlord being rude - we get in The Horse and Groom regularly, and find him to be a pleasant fellow who knows his beer and food, and who chats to the customers whether they are regulars or otherwise.

The refurbishment may not be to everyone's taste, but the previous incarnation of this pub was dire so it's a definite improvement. It is now a very pleasant setting for a meal (excellent food) and a pint (constantly changing selection of cask ales). Good pub quiz on Thursday nights.
Jude_The_Obscure - 7 Mar 2006 17:52
This pub has been used by the local population of mortimer for as long as I can remember. Although I am still only in my 30's, I can remember going in there with my dad. I am very sad to find that this pub has become something out of reading town centre, and the landlord is less than friendly, let alone hygenic. As a villager since I was born, it makes me sad that I can no longer drink in this pub due to the literal face of management.
