took my 11 year old here for dinner, nothing on the menu for kids, although half portions were offered but the food was not what a kid would want, no wine list, ordered the cheapest bottle, the worst wine i have ever had, did't find out the price until the bill came,£13. RIP OFF. i had a steak which was ok, but salad had seen better days, chips were a bit over cooked,my daughter had a jacket spud and that was fine, will return for drinks but deffinately NOT for food and certainly wouldnt recommend it

I had not been to this pub since the change over - under the previous ownership, this pub was a bear pit. What a difference a name makes. With new names above the door and a much fresher and exciting menu, all I can say is WOW! From the moment you walk in the door, it feels inviting, a place where you meant to find yourself. It has it's busy nights, with some great live music - Zoo were a great 80s vocal group and well worth a listen to. The menu has dramatically changed. There are still some of the traditional pub menu items, but then you can almost forget you are in a pub when there are some quite a-la-carte choices and as for the desserts, they can rival any fancy pants eaterie in London. The service from behind the bar and the restaurant staff was top notch, you can tell the staff enjoy being there, which is infectious. The new owners are very friendly too. This is a pub where you can be left on your own or be consumed by and be a welcomed part of the friendly buzz and atmosphere - needs to be put on the map, a definite place to try, again and again and again.

ate here recently there were seven of us and we waited well over 45 minutes for our starter to arrive, when it did it was of poor quality, thin watery soup, the chips with the main meal were 'soggy' as though they had been put in cold oil, were pre-cooked and acted like sponges soaking up the oil..yuk would not recomend this place toa anyone certainly will not be going there again, over priced, poor quality, poor service not recomended.

great beer garden, decent selection of ales
|
Used to a lovely pub, but as prices have crept up quality has dropped off. Neither the food or the ales match the standard set when it was first taken over. Needs a good shake up as the building and gardens are beautiful and merit a much more professional standard.
|
It's alright. The price of ale is too high, but redeemed by the food's fairly good value for money. Staff are pleasent enough. Roomy backend of the pub is good for larger groups, as is the ample garden and splendid patio area.
|
Nothing dreadfully wrong as a pub but not the place I would spend a whole evening. Too many chairs and small tables near the door and blocking walkways. Bar stools should be removed from the bar on busy nights to give people at least an outside chance of getting to the bar.

You`d have to be blind or particularly oblivious not to spot that the management of the Black Horse put most of their emphasis on the first part of the term “restaurant pub”: its ingrained in everything from its leafy location (between city and suburbs, next to a park), its ample “family” parking, the dominance of the restaurant section over the pub area and the rather heavy handed promotion of the menu.
This does at least guarantee above standard food (in menu depth and quality) and a customer service experience that’s more akin to, erm, a restaurant than your typical boozer. Equally the prices are cheap and thanks to the successful capture of the local family meal market the atmosphere is generally pleasant, if sometimes as sedate as a horse with an arse full of tranquillisers.
The predictable downside is that the pub side really feels like it’s a vaguely neglected add on, not just in the characterless and conveyor belt produced oldie look, but also in a restricted tap range and limited bar staff.
Putting it simply the Black Horse is the sort of place you`d take your parents or elderly relatives for a quiet (and cheap) pub lunch, but not the sort of establishment you`d go to start an all night rat arse session.
6/10
