user reviews of the Royal Oak, Tolworth

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Having visited the Royal Oak more often in 2017, I felt I should offer another review as it''s clearly changed a lot since some of the other reviewers visited (some time ago).

This is now a very well run (if a little pricey) pub. Always at least 4 ales on - all of which are well kept - and plenty of cider and lager, craft beer choice. It''s got a nice smart interior, but is still obviously a pub and the garden area is a nice place to drink in the summer. Food is good too.

As mentioned above, it''s probably a little too expensive - although it almost seems normal now based on other places - but it''s certainly worth a visit if you''re local or in the area as it''s much better than many of the reviews suggest.

A grotty pub inside and out, located at the far end of the broadway. On the far left is a pool table area with stone flag stones and the remainder of the L-shaped lounge is carpeted. All the decor looked very tired. The bar, although had 3 hand pumps only had Courage bitter available. On the more positive note, I overheard a conversation that there is a new manager and the pub is to be "redone". It certainly needs it. My visit was back in August so the pub may now be much better. I will revisit sometime to check it out.

Pub with a single knocked through bar - bit of a barn with no soft furnishings and few hard ones. Big screen available but was not in use on a Saturday afternoon when I popped in - maybe because the only sport on TV was cricket. Pool table and games machines with background music on. Decent size garden but unkempt - seems mainly used for smoking area. Two ales on draught - Courage Best and Youngs Ordinary - I had a pint of the Ordinary and it was ok. Collection of football shirts fixed to the most disgusting coloured (khaki?) ceiling that I have ever seen. Few punters in - little atmosphere except a noticeable smell.

Kids running wild, strange atmosphere. Didn't notice a real ale, staff friendly. Used to live near here 30 years ago and having a wander round - definitely gone a long way downhill

Yikes, just popped in there recently. NASTY. Just thought i'd update the review thread to let people know there is no change.

The 'selection of real ales' was a selection of 1, that being courage best, and it tasted weird.

As the German U-boat captain said......"DIVE, DIVE, DIVE!!!!!"

Not the pub of old by any stretch.

This could be a fine pub and was when I first started boozing in the early nineties with good beer, good punters and the then lesser spotted SKY Sports! It went into a bit of a dive for a while but picked up well again when Ray, Wendi and Shaun were there. Sadly went in recently and it has gone back into a depressing dive from which it may never recover. Wont be back until (if) changes.

I think this place does have potential, but it seems to be one of those pubs where the locals are firmly determined to put off any new customers who might give it a try. Beer was nasty and no red wine other than a horrible merlot in a mini bottle. Won't be back.

Went in here for the first time a week ago and it's just plain nasty, horrible beer, chav dogs running around and patrons that would be dangerous if they had a brain cell between them. Avoid at all costs.

Hi all,
first let me say that the oak HAS got the potential to be a great pub, as was proved in the past, but its the people who go there not the g'ovners who create the right ambiance.Do what you did for me and Wendi , and go back and reclaim your pub, yes it helps if the g'ovnors care but why should they if the punters dont? We had some great times there in our 4 1/2 years , but as you will well remember it was hard work cleaning up the place but hey its been done once, why not again? cya all soon ray (non landlord)piss taker

hi ya Loyal Oaf's.....how are you all doing. We both miss the Oak but are sure glad that you take the time to come see us at our new place. We had some great times when we were at the Oak....great parties hehehe hang in there

My local and I avoid it like the plague. Poor beer and company more akin to pond life. If you support Chelsea you might get by but it says everything when all the previous regulars under the old manager have moved on to other watering holes.

Definitely a good place for flying glasses and ashtrays! Was fairly good when Wendy was there and then went totally downhill. Getting a little better now - would hate to have to stand in garden again to duck out of the way of glasses - not much of an escape from there either.

the royal chav - i went in recently and thought i was at the zoo.

Don't bother unless the backs of your hands drag on the ground.

The "new landlady" has gone and there is another new landlady who doesn't seem bothered either. Whatever happened to pub landlords/landladies who actually looked pleased to see customers? It's a shame because it wasn't a bad pub when the Scouser was there.
doghouse - 22 Apr 2006 23:24
i used the pub in the 80's has anyone seen the griz?
carstairs - 9 Apr 2006 09:26
What a horrid place! I wouldn'nt go back! Don't have to say anything else!
switch83 - 25 Jan 2006 15:51
Wendi & The Scouser have now sadly gone to pastures new. New Landlady doesn't seem bothered! The place has now gone completely downhill and the old, banned "Undesirables" have returned. Do like the New Landlady, "Don't Bother!"
anonymous - 11 Jan 2006 19:46
Well, unfortunately for the non Chelsea supporters, the Scouse (Non Landlord) has gone!
The new Guvorness is good & doesn't take any S**t.
Bitter good and great atmosphere for the Footie!
anonymous - 26 Oct 2005 00:05
OK so he's not the Landlord! But it's not too important I think. The putting of Chelsea fans back in their place is what's important.
GNC - 3 May 2005 10:51
Who's this Raj bloke, I've never heard of him. By the way, as in my last comment, the scouse (P!ss taking) geezer is not the landlord!
anonymous - 28 Apr 2005 16:59
It's alright apart from smelly/drunk bloke called Raj who can be found there from time to time. He really lowers the tone. He also has the indecency of never owning a spear! Landlord funny when taking p!ss out of Chavski fans!
GNC - 28 Apr 2005 16:42
Okay, so it's a Chelsea Pub! But all supporters are welcome there to support their team, the Chelsea Boys do actually have a sense of humour.

By the way, the Scouser isn't the Landlord, he's the Lanlady's 'Other Half'.
anonymous - 27 Feb 2005 12:31
I would imagine that this place would be a brilliant place for blokes who love lager and love CFC.

These are great passions I'm sure, but they're not for me. On my visit I found the atmosphere to be a bit threatening, and finished my drink as quickly as possible, continuing on my way up towards Surbiton proper.

Tolworth has never been a good place for pubs, and the Royal Oak is no exception.
loz - 2 May 2004 12:52
Good pub, comfortable, good crowd, good TV coverage of football. Pool and 2 dart boards.
Steve - 2 Sep 2003 19:36
This has been my local (off and on) for 20 years. Great place to watch football (particularly when Chelsea are playing). Decent crowd, no aggro. Scouse landlord (can't have everything!)

Trotsky - 19 Apr 2003 18:39
Easy to miss if flying to/from Tolworth Broadway. Nothing special but it's a decent place with comfy seating & a big screen.
