LOL@historyloony. Well said!!

As a certain Top Gear presenter would say: "For crying out loud!" In 2 years this pub has gone from being the Peacock to O'Neills Bar, to Ryans Bar (in May), back to O'Neills Bar (in August) and NOW back to the Peacock!! I've heard of identity crises but this is ridiculous.

Review of Ryan's Bar.....
Appears to have a friendly clientelle. Good atmosphere. Nicely decorated. No bitter or ale, which is a shame. Will probably go back at some point.

This is now RYAN's BAR, following yet another change. First impressions are that the place is a bit cleaner, and the new food menu is tempting. But lager-drinking and Sky Sports continue to dominate.
historyloony - 26 May 2009 16:39
This is maginally better than the old Peacock pub, and definitely cleaner. But already it's in the grip of its dedicated locals, and yesterday (Friday) there was only one person behind the bar to serve the rabble. After being elbowed and jostled for 5 minutes I gave up trying to get a drink and departed. Shall not return. 4/10

Re-opened as O'Neill's. Not the chain, owned by the same people who have O'Neill's in Welwyn GC. Has gaelic football and hurling on the box every Sunday for all you Irish. An improvement, seems to have cleared out the previous clientele, staff and manager are very helpful, TV in the garden. Bit smokey, roll on the ban.
Sherminator - 23 Jun 2007 23:02
It's reopened!
O'Neills Bar is OK but I suspect that really most of the customers are ex-Peacock. Oh well.
The London Pride is fine.
Time will tell.
historyloony - 26 Apr 2007 21:34
It's coming back! But not as the Peacock.
It will be called O'Neills Bar, sister to an establishment in Welwyn Garden City. And it's nothing to do with the big chain - this is a separate enterprise owned by people called O'Neill (allegedly).
A big sign has been erected outside, and inside builders are working away, so it could be open soon.

Still shut. No news. Doesn't look good.
historyloony - 7 Jan 2007 11:06
Is this place still open?
stub - 2 Nov 2006 16:22
It's reopened - and what a transformation! An expensive refurb has seen the back area converted into a restaurant, with a separate bar at the front. By the looks of it, no expense has been spared.
I suspect that the new managers want to promote the restaurant primarily, which could explain the high bar prices (£3 for a pint of Bombardier). But when I popped in yesterday evening the restaurant was empty, and there were about 10 drinkers in the bar, all smartly attired (except for one scruffy, unshaven scumbag, i.e. yours truly).
The transformation of the Peacock is a brave venture, and I hope it works out.

No, it hasn't yet reopened (I checked yesterday). Stay tuned for further developments...

Has reopened.

Shut down! It's currently being refurbished and will return as The Peacock Bar and Restaurant for "Over 21s". Oh well, it might turn out to be a good thing - could hardly be worse than the old pub.
anonymous - 27 Apr 2006 21:03
Not much cop. It's OK as a meeting place, but there are few drinks available - I had to resort to drinking John Smiths! - and Sky Sports blares out. Keep walking.

pleasant comfortable pub, though a serious lack of choice when it comes to beers/lagers....
moclips2002 - 29 Jan 2006 23:25
Very impressed, used to always be shut in the day, think it's open from 5pm now? Pool table, tvs everywhere, very relaxed and friendly. Amazing guinness. Pool table as well, but £1.50 a go

TOP pub! great atmosphere, great tuna and cheese melt, wicked staff and cool monthly themed nights. Try it out
michelle - 21 Apr 2004 12:25
TV pub. Small no-smoking area but it is not properly separated from the rest of the pub. Food used to be good, but is only average now. Sometimes there is a good local real ale on tap. Car-park garden.
Allan Stewart - 18 Mar 2004 00:58
I've only been here once, but they have comfy sofas and serve nice chips.
anonymous - 29 Dec 2003 17:50
graet pub since it has been done up good beer especially the Boddingtons.
annonymous - 12 Aug 2003 15:21
Great food. Light and airy. Comfy sofa's. Great for watching sport, with five tv's you can see a tv wherever you sit. The football table comp on monday night is always good for a laugh and the curry club on wednesdays is excellent. Karaoke once a month is the best. Fantastic pub
