user reviews of Yates's, Lewisham

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

I notice that the old Yates building is being done up at the moment . Does anyone know what it's going to be?

(Which means it's closed down just incase you haven't worked that out)

They've made me redundant, I take back all the positive things I said about this place

I live in the US now but I remember when Yates's first opened in the mid 90's.This place was heaven has it really gone that bad in the last 10 years or so .Surely it can't be as bad as LA where I'm living now, sure hope it's not too bad coz when I go bad to visit Lewisham ,Yates's is gonna be one of the first places I hit for a cold brew.
My mates and I even quit going 2 the West End when it opened up, what with having to catch a train/nitebus, paying 15/20 quid to go clubbing. Yates's was a godsend when places like Ministry,Limelight Legends etc were charging 30 quid and upwards on New Years Eve.

I have read the reviews given here and i have to say that they are extremely harsh to say the least. I have been working at this pub for a month now and can I just inform everyone that our plasma TV's are all in colour and have excellent sound quality. It may have been dodgy before I came but it is now fine. Additionally the comments posted here are all negrophobic. (Just for the record, I am not black myself). Yes there is trouble in this pub, but isn't that the same for most/all pubs? And these "rudeboys" spend good money and are just looking to have a good time. I don't see how the way they dress and walk has anything to do with the quality of this pub. The reason why there is a charge at the door is because we are suffering financially... and it's because of people like you who say such horrible things about Yates in Lewisham. I constantly have customers asking me if I have made a mistake on my till because our prices are more than fair. 1.70 per pint on fosters and 1.50 per pint on john smiths. Pretty good don't you think?

Are you a wannabe gangster? Do you feel the need to strut you hip hop walk (the one where you look as though you've sprained your ankle) within the confines of a pub? Well, look no further friend, you have arrived at your destination - on the occasions I have been in the giant hellhole of a public house, I have wondered if I had mistakely walked into a steortyped "rap" video. The steady decline of our society is reflected extremly well here by the the scores of young men willing to shake of the mocking that is normally aimed in their direction, and wear their jeans under their arses and bounce around in what can only be described as a Rudeboy demeanor. The fact that the largest police station in Europe was built next door doesn't strike me as coincidental....

Came in here Saturday night (23 Sept) after checking out ONE around the corner as it is on the way to Lewisham station. See my previous post. This place is symbolic of the urban decline in Lewisham. For a Saturday night approaching 10ish, it was practically empty. A far cry from its heyday years ago. Even the main plasma screen away from the one above the bar was black and white! Thankfully, we did not pay the now 5 charge to get in, but the paucity of female talent was a joke. The only positive was that the music blaring out was not "cheese", but we did not hang around.

That should read Jan '99. Whoops!
PigPen_in_the_Fens - 13 Sep 2006 17:31
This used to by wok local from the day it opened until about Jan '95. Saw the great times, the good times and in the end it was mainly poor times.

Will always remember Christmas and New Year's Eve in here. They were just the best times.

Used to be for the comedy nights, which were never really appriecated by the local morons. In fact one of the fellas who used to compere the comedy nights, ended up on Channel 4 on Friday nights with Gail Porter, i think his name was Chris.

For me the best times were being in there after work. Used to finish @ 1500Hrs and be in Yates by 1505Hrs. And it used to have Bud on tap. Which is almost as rare as rocking horse shit!!!

Bet it isn't that good in there now! It's getting a rating for how it was not for how it is.
PigPen_in_the_Fens - 13 Sep 2006 17:29
Awful, especially on a Friday or Saturday night. 4 entry after 10 is also a joke. Always full of rudeboys or 'plastic gangsters', so not the best place to look for H-File victims!! People do make the place and this has to be one of the worst Yates' in En ger land. Dark, dull, dingy and downright deplorable. Some of my Sarf-East London mates come here to watch football, but even the screen above the bar seldom has sound coming from it, leaving one plasma that does. Rubbish.

I went in this place once, having only ever been to one Yate's wine lodge before...in Newcastle. My overriding memory from may experience in Newcastle was trying to get rid of a previous nights curry and in a poorly sanitized, open-air lavatory, that was probably the worst lavatory I ever visited in Britain.
And then I go to the one in Lewisham, and the place is like a roman spa...very elaborate....and probably the best public lavatory I have ever perchanced on. I just wanted to share that irony of fate with all of you....

the island.

I've ventured in this pub a couple of times when passing through Lewisham. It seemed okay to me, though a bit too open spaced and I did detect a bit of an atmosphere. I'd be happy to drink here during the day, but not too sure about Friday or Saturday nights.

When I think of Yates the only things that spring to mind are the film "Colours" and South Central LA!!!!!

Avoid, avoid,avoid.....

Had a 'meal' in there two weekends ago, had a steak which wasn't very good at all, leathery, the waitress also mucked up the order. So this weekend went to Marlows and had a proper meal which was miles better. I only went into Yates because it was easy as I was meeting a friend who had just been working out in Fitness First above. Noticed they now have 2 pool tables as well and more TV's with sky dotted around. There are much better places to go than this for a Sunday afternoon meal. As for the other nights, I think ashleyc's comments below are spot on, when I pass by all I see is gangs of youths looking for trouble. I don't think I can think of a reason to go in there, can anybody?

Rich
RichLondoner - 15 Nov 2005 12:22
all yates attracts is trouble, all you see outside on a friday or saturday nightbis a gang of youths with a police van next to them. at jus 18 i would feel old in there. sort it out. used to be nice.
ashleyc - 5 Apr 2005 14:01
This could be a good pub, especially for football, but is spoiled because:

1. People are allowed to sit in the best seats for viewing the footy and often do not buy any drinks. I object to subsidizing these people.

2. There is no enforcement of the no smoking areas. On one afternoon not only did people smoke, but one person brought in his own can of beer! Nothing was said.
jimbo842uk - 23 Mar 2005 16:11
Yates in Lewisham is the worst pub ive ever been to. I use to go every week for years, but it has gone very down hill lately. The last few times i went there for a drink, they did not have anything but alchopops or bottled beer in their fridge, no wine at all. The tables are always dirty, and the female toilet is disgusting, harly any doors even lock! Their policy about head wraps is also wrong! me friend was tuened away on saturday night, as she is a rastafarian, and was told to take her head wrap off, and that it would have been ok if she was 'indian' or a 'muslim', but as she wasnt, she was not allowed entry. The manager even said it was 'illegal' to let her in with a wrap on her head! now we all know that is not true!

Up until recently I'd never been in here, popped in over christmas to get away from the crowds & ended up there for the nite!!!
The food's cheap & better than the wetherspoons, & the drinks arent bad either!!!
ClaireD - 26 Jan 2005 16:15
I am a regular at this Bar and would like to say since the manager took over a few months ago, how improved the bar has become. The bar now has new DJ's, friday & saturday, who play a great variation of music, quick service for the bar staff, and now with the improved security, the problems stay outside the bar, the amount of females coming to the bar is growing every week.

I worked at the Ladywell When Peter Smith was the Landlord in 1958. He wasn't a very good boss but he was a good landlord and we kept the place clean. There was no music then just a cosy atmosphere where people came to relax and enjoy the company and a drink of good ale.
Jack Richardson - 5 Jul 2004 08:57
yate is very good i love they play good music and its a fun night out so what if theres boys outside they wont do anthing to you if anything they'll fancy you plus the police stations round the corner and their not that stupid

On Saturday 24th April Lewisham Yates

Hi I'm a local who moved to Sweden almost 3years ago. In those three years once a month i revisit my local(Yates) with friends around the blackheath area. I have a skin disorder and over the last year have been going treatment here in Sweden. I recently revisted my local and was told very early in the evening that i could not enter, unless i removed my hat.
1. I would like to point out that my condition was mentioned to the door staff who seem to be sympathetic and refered me to the Manager who stood behind me. I reitererated my condition and stated that if it is still he's wishes i remove it, i will be forced to leave.

2. Its a muslim scull cap. Which allows me to dress more conservative. Not a baseball cap.

3. The youngster who entered directly in front of us were not challenge. But rather a mature man who has used the yates to entertain guest, clients and i would even go as far as to say i held my leaving party at the yates.

4. If a Muslim or a seek had entered your establishment would they be given access?

5. Because i have a very open scar on my head i am forced to hide it with a hat. I'm sure as a ex licencee there is some discretion we operate.

Hi just to add a comment and possibly the first from a lady visitor. No, Yates in Lewisham is no Mayfair Club, Propaganda or even Corks. If you want that kind of atmosphere, go up West End!!! But just as Chris says, Friday night there is a total laugh....cheap booze and great music! Everyone dancing. I've never seen any violence in there, but maybe I've been lucky?? Yes, it is a total and utter meat market, but just as with any threatening behaviour or so-called bad boys/girls trying to give off hard looks....if you don't want it just walk on by!
Nicky - [email protected] - 31 Jan 2004 14:18
Must be in the reckoning for the worst pub in London. No decent ale and a miserable atmosphere.

Fantastic Gents toilets though.
Will - 26 Jan 2004 22:59
What is all the fuss about... I've been to Yates's in Lewisham loads of times and I think its a really good Friday night out!! They play decent R&B music as opposed to all that pop rubbish most pubs play! I haven't witnessed any violence when I've been there and yes there are lots of young boys that hang around at closing time, but they are outside because they're were not allowed in!!

The crowd is decent... not every1 is one they're last legs at the end of the night. I'd much rather spend my night with a lively crowd dancing to some decent music rather than than drinking myself stupid and vomitting all over the place!! which I'm sure most of the people who wrote in to rate this club do!

So No! it's not rough. Those who think it is need to grow a backbone and stop cowering over the sight of a few young boys in hoods!! I noticed Paul says he's never been in... Well! talk about judging a book by its cover. Pretty ignorant of you to write a piece about a place that you've never ACTUALLY been into!!

Chris - 29 Dec 2003 13:51
seems alright during the day. Can't comment about the evening and don't intend to find out!
Clare - 25 Oct 2003 17:31
