The Oak was taken over a while ago by a local pub group, with about a dozen outlets - manly in East Surrey.

Standards, including those for food, are high. And the beer quality has never been better.

Lovely village green pub - with friendly staff and ample parking.

I will comment on the beer and the pub. The beer was ok but not exciting, standard fare of London Pride, Doombar and Young's Bitter. I had the Doombar which went down very well. A tad expensive at 3.40 but this is Surrey. The pub itself I liked a lot, simply furnished but comfortable, warm and welcoming. I like the way one end is for families/diners, whilst the other end of the 'L' shape room is for darts players and locals, with the bar in the middle. Plus it is in a lovely setting, I must go back on a nice summer's evening.......

It`s `Beerintheevening` not `Veg or pie intheevening` so your wrong trader.

no, i agree with roverbetokens. A pub has to be a place to relax and enjoy the atmosphere and service. So this website is about beers and the bar but has to be about the setting too as is redbarrels comment. Both Good comments! But at the end of the day, the ales and prices have already been published on this website so its good to see in depth comments and experiences.

Great review Roverbetokens, just one problem.

The site is called beer in the evening so it would have been nice to have a review of the ales etc. I am very gald you had crackers, different coloured tissues, christmas flowers and plants, candles on your table but sadly you have missed the whole point of the website.

I had a christmas meal at the Royal Oak last night, was greeted by friendly staff and were taken to our prepared table. We had pre-booked and ordered our meals. We sat down to the table, which was laid excellently with crackers, different coloured tissues, christmas flowers and plants, candles and in a lovely atmosphere where me and all my friends could relax. I had my starter, Prawn Cocktail (which was excellent and beautifully presented) followed by roast turkey with pots, gravy, sprouts, carrots, excellent stuffing and presented fantastically. My dessert was a cheese board, very beautifully presented. And followed by Mince Pies, all the meals were homemade and tasted fantastically. If i had to be critical, the mince pies were not homemade but the other 3 courses made up for that. The Service was excellent and it was fantastic value. All 3 courses and Mince Pies for 20pp but i am not sure if this is just because we booked the xmas menu. IM IN THE PROCESS OF TELLING ALL MY CLOSE FRIENDS!! Excellent homemade food, service, value and setting. Thank you to all the staff at the Royal Oak, you made it special!

A nice, probably Victorian era building on the outside, spoilt on the inside by a rough attempt at modernisation in the 60's or 70's, by the look of it. The interior is L shaped with a sports club looking bar at the corner of the L and odds and ends of seating around with a few tables and chairs for meals at the rear of one end of the L shape, at the back of the pub, and a dart board down the other end of the L, at the front of the pub. Not what one would call a cosy, olde worlde Inn but no doubt it serves a lot of the locals well enough otherwise it would have closed by now.
Beers: Youngs Bitter, Fullers London Pride & Sharps Doom Bar.

Pride, Youngs Bitter and Doom Bar (3.30). Ok pub, dartboard to left inside. Some seating outside.

Just had a lovely lunch at the Royal Oak. Despite the previous comments I opted for a ploughmans and was given a generours amount of cheese AND ham!. Excellent value for money and the wifes sandwich was top notch. Decent pint of Youngs and fantastic surroundings. Spotless baby changing facilities as well. We will definitely be going back.

Visited this pub a couple of times in the summer so the date of this review is a bit misleading and the pub (and food) may have changed.
Pub has obviously undergone a makeover and looks nice if a little modern in places. Beer was fine and staff were pretty friendly.
Main gripe was the food which was not that great. When ordering the ploughmans was given the choice of cheese or ham when I had assumed that it would have both (was told that was not an option) and turned out to be some of those part baked rolls, a slab of prepacked cheddar and some iceberg. The rest of my party reported similarly disappointing results.
This is the sort of food that you would have got in a pub in the 70s / 80s and could do with a bit more effort for the prices charged.
Doesn't seem to dent the popularity of the place though as it is always busy, will be eating here in the next couple of weeks so will provide an update if it has improved.

Very friendly and relaxed welcome (Sunday lunch). Nice to see a wooden floored seating area where our dogs were allowed to sit as we ate, alternatively there's the carpeted section at the back. Almost went outside as it was a warm day for early April to christen the new tables . Green King IPA went down very nicely. We thoroughly recommend, steak and Stilton pie and roast chicken. Our veggie enthused over the cheese broccoli bake complete with sliced potatoes in! Apple crumble, spotted dick and lemon drizzle cake all good. Looking forward to the next time.

Well, what a transformation! Darren & Suzanne moved took the helm at the Royal Oak in November, within three months it is back to being a truly great pub, fantastic atmosphere, and welcoming to not only the locals, but to the many visitors to our village.

Very nice pub in beautiful setting.Landlord seems a very nice chap and other regulars seem a friendly bunch.A strange thing does occur on a sunday evening, when a strange looking chap with loads of hair and a gold tooth holds political rants and tries to hug any young lady who will let him.Quite bizarre.

Currently closed for a refurbishment, worth trying the Dukes Head

Well-kept Harveys, seating scarce as small public bar area largely given over to darts board, food served in separate space. As mentioned previously, good location for watching the action on the village green.

A gripe - the gents toilet could do with a 'mind your head' sign at the entrance. I hit it 3 times, which i'm sure is not a record......

nice pub , good views of the green , cheaper than the duke nearby and more of a friendly enviroment,
old brock lad - 31 Aug 2004 17:31
Yup, not as classy (we're talking D vs C class!) as the 'head, the Oak is an amusing wee pub with a more prominent position on the green. Worth a visit
goosegog - 23 Aug 2004 23:29
Pleasant pub in gorgeous spot on village green. Proper public bar. Open fire. Nice pint of Harveys.
