I think this pub's ok and go here fairly regularly. Ok-ish beers and I didn't find the staff too offensive, as per other pub-goers.
They did have a pop at my friend Trev when he asked for a fork though.

This pub is full of City broker scum who work in the local area. I heard one such creature called Wadada(??) order a "pint of pinot grigio lalalargio" shortly before threatening someone with a pool cue. Sums it up.

What a lottery this pub is.
Last Thursday the staff rang the bell at 10:30 for last orders (which they at first said was just a joke) and then after ten minutes told us to stop playing pool. I enquired why they were shutting early and the East European girl smiled smugly and said they were a Free House and could do what they liked.
Okay so they're a Free House, but I pointed out that there's a certain expectation for customers to be able to drink until 11pm in a pub on a weekday.
She said they didn't have enough customers (about 20) to stay open. The diminutive Italian bar girl then started swearing at us in Italian. We were ordered to leave the premises at 10:45.
As we left the staff started pulling pints for a lock in.
This could be a great pub in good hands, I especially like the paintings of early European tanks and armoured cars in the pool table area. Shame about the random, irrational 'screw you' behaviour of the staff.

Great boozer. One of my favorites.
|
Popped in for a couple of jars and a sit down. Whilst other half was about to order at the bar I was asked to vacate the table(by whom it seemed was in charge)for 3 tourists as they were GOING to order food!!!! Forgive me but, food profits concidered, it's a pub and not a busy one at that (and these guys were probably never coming back). My main issue was being told rather than asked. Bizarre. Needless to say we left straight away and ended up in the White Hart where we enjoyed a fair few in peace.

Back street boozer with high street prices, but it is in the City so I suppose we have to live with that. Bit of a tired looking pub and the service can be unpredictable, depends what part of Europe the bar staff comes from.

I have been going to this pub on and off for about 3 years, perhaps twice a month. Generally en route to sausage and mash. The beer is OK and it was OK after the city "gents" have cleared off. Last Monday the sour faced eastern girl (see Henriktheking) gave me the wrong change for a tenner. She refused to check the till - which I thought was the accepted norm. She then refused to talk to the police who I got on the phone. I think the landlord - Mr Pollack? - should get a grip. Looks like a scam to me.
Clearly I won't be going back. There's a good pint of Bombardier round the corner and S&M still a great caff.

Well Spitalfields Market has been completely redeveloped but fortunately this has completely bypassed the Gun.
Looks like it was last decorated in about 1960 and is definitely a decent place for a pint - they even have San Miguel on tap which makes a nice change.
The food is basic but quite good - the biggest problem in coming here for lunch is making it past Sausage and Mash without being tempted in.
I have some sympathy with those who complain about the prices but everywhere in the City is that way these days and I'd rather pay in the Gun than some of the plastic bars which now proliferate in the Swquare Mile

Decent East End boozer, just a shame the toilets haven't been replastered since Jack the Ripper was using them.
|
Average Adnams Broadside £3.20 a pint.....Now that's rip-off Britain. I said £3.20 a Pint!!! and not even top quality!
|
Your inane ramblings about television screens leaves me cold, but you have piqued my interest by saying that the Gun is being demolished - I'd ask you to elaborate but I am doubtful that you can post here without prattling on about your "campaign".

One of the problems with Rip-Off Britain is that customers seem to avoid/ignore the problem. After informing the manager that their two flat-panel TVs were showing distorted 4:3 pictures, he said that he understood the problem, but wasn't going to do anything about it, since his customers, "after 6 pints", would not see the problem. He also made an excuse(?) that the place was going to be knocked down in 2 weeks' time (or perhaps he might have said 2 months). STAND UP FOR YOURSELF, MAN! Popped in for a quick drink on the way back from a particularly fiery curry on Brick Lane and was immediately impressed. Bar service was instantaneous and friendly, beer was cold (lager, don't fear real ale fans!)and prices no more or less than anywhere else in the environs. Selection of beers ran to four real ales, three draught lagers and Guiness with a small range of bottles including the increasingly rare Light Ale to supplement them. The look of the pub is appealing, it's a nice building on a corner for starters and inside you are treated to carpets resplendent with cannon motifs in case you forget where you are and need a visual aid, long curved leather benches that form booths of sorts, a nice bright ceiling, some wood panneling, some much needed rotary ceiling fans and one of those old fashioned display fridges for food, in no particular order. Clientele when I arrived was devoid of the suits (it was about 9.45 and well after the post work crush after all) and was a good mix of studenty types and more grizzled looking older regulars and the atmosphere was relaxed and cosy. Hope to visit again in the near future and may try the food next time which I am assured by reliable sources is very good.
|
I've not been to this pub before but I had a few observations on my one visit. Nice old fashioned pub, in the city so lots of suits but they seemed quite inoffensive.
However, I was served a bad pint of Youngs, which the barman refused to change, in a fairly unpleasant fashion. At the end of the day that is a reason I wouldn't drink there again, and would urge real ale drinkers to avoid it. A real shame.

Fairly run-of-the-mill sort of pub. Popular with shoppers from the nearby markets. The beer was OK although not all that cheap.
|
I dunno what on earth 'almills' is on about. It's called The Gun because a couple of hundred years ago part of Spitalfields was a training area for a London militia which used artillery guns. Maybe they should rename it the Fluffy Bunny to keep him/her happy.
Anyway, I like this pub. It doesn't seem to have been entirely invaded by Nathan Barley and his mates – unlike the Golden Heart round the corner.
|
The pub itself is ok. Some of the punters are annoying, especially the suits on 20K a year who act like millionaires. there is a sour faced eastern European girl who works there sometimes who looks like her face would crack if she smiled. There is a pool table and the beer is well kept.
|
A nice pub for a meal and a pint. After some strenuous (forced) shopping hours this is the perfect pub for afternoon dining. Even though the area slowly has been overtaken and surrounded by modern City high-rise buildings, I still feel the atmosphere relaxed and genuine.
|
A few daft comments of late. This is a proper old boozer. Not enough if these places left. It's a pub that attracts an eclectic mix of drinkers but that's never a bad thing, surely ? Dave is the landlord - and a very good one at that - not the amusingly curt Jock you refer to, Mr Sock.
|
Pathetic. If i opened a pub up i wouldnt call it 'The Gun'. That is possibly the worst name i have ever heard for anything.
The lager is good and the customers are an alright mix of people. A decent location and if you dont like theres plenty of good places near by. But despite all this its still called 'The Gun' and therefore i wouldnt recommend it based on that.
|
Where do i start? The interior of the pub hasn't been touched for (at least what looks like) 30 years. The clientele is a strange mix of braying city-boys and clueless locals. Of particular note is the fat scottish landlord who'll happily give you a parting earful of abuse.
This place would almost be worth a visit in a circus style if it wasn't for the final insult of being charged over the odds for a near undrinkable pint of lager. And given I can't think of a worse pub within 5 minutes walk, why bother?
Avoid.
|
Quite a lot (more) change going on in the area at the moment now that they've knocked half of Spitalfields Market down. But The Gun survives as it always will. Will be there this Friday for our annual close-season drinks.
|
I disagree slightly with Mr. Lash here.
Although a good place for watching football the real ales are kept very badly.
I do find myself returning though. I'm not sure why because Dirty Dicks is better... Variety? I suppose it does have a down-to-earth atmosphere which is unusual for the city. With all the development nearby it will probably change.
|
Good old fashioned boozer. The beer isn't anything to write home about (though there's nothing worng with it - and I think it's a freehouse which is always to be welcomed) but the place has quite an 'honest' feel about it and the staff/licensees are friendly. Good place to hide from colleagues - also to watch footie on one of the screens
|
An excellent layout for a pub, absolute first class, it even has carpet with The Gun inn sign in the pattern. So why by 8pm on a Sunday had the place nearly run out of alcohol? All they had left on tap was Kronenburg - not even any Strongbow or anything. I can go to a bad house party if I want to be left with that dilemma. Poor show.
|
Very enjoyable, at last a pub in the city where you can sit down, get to the bar quickly..

I hope this place is not going downhill but the current batch of E.European barmaids, (although OK on the eye), struggle so match with the lingo that you often get the wrong bitter.
|
This is a pretty decent old boozer I must say. I have only been there a few times, sometimes on my tod and other times with friends. Every time has been good. There really is a lovely atmosphere.

When all the Shoreditch twats have moved on, this place will still be standing. A good little local.

This pub's a cracker. Beer and food is always just right. A good all rounder - cozy during the winter and perfect to stand outside of in the summer. Always go there with my Gooner mates during the closes season !
