I hadn't been here for a while because what had been good seemed to be getting less good and more expensive. Thought I'd give it a try again recently and was pleasantly surprised.

This is still a pub. Just. The emphasis as always is on eating as it is with most pubs these days but for those who remember when the primary purpose of a pub was to have a drink and socialise with your friends, you can still do that here. There is a much more formal dining area but most seem to dine in the bar area.

When I was there, they served Harvey's Sussex, Sharp's Doombar and Well's Bombardia. I tried the Doombar and the Sussex and both were good.

I tried the food too and though it was very good and, while not cheap, not overly expensive either. I also found the staff to be very friendly and attentive without being overbearing. I believe the current management have been there since October 2011 and in my opinion are doing a good job. I believe they also do food all day Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Good news, dogs are allowed, bad news, so are kids!!

I went here on Christmas Day with my partner and I am afraid it wasn't up to much. The change of management has not done it any favours. For 65 a head I expected more than dried turkey and a strangely bitter gravy- I think it had burnt at some point. The staff were friendly but clearly there were not enough- what seemed to be the Manager and 1 other. Two Christmases ago we came here and it was excellent, hence the re-booking. Slow service. The veg was ok. The starter of mushroom was unimaginative and not very tasty. The turkey roast was poor, and the dessert was pretty grim! Oh dear. Shan't be going back- but for a place opposite Wakehurst it would do for a basic lunch. Pretty place, too.

Lovely surroundings combined with good food and beer. Table service is a nice touch but this is still a pub and not just an eating place. If I was going to be REALLY picky the food could have been a tad hotter but what we had was excellent. Looking at the decorations I would imagine Christmas here would be brilliant. Definitely coming back.

Visited this one recently at lunch time. I didn't eat, but enjoyed a few whiskey macs before taking off with the dog.

The pub is one open area, which doesn't really work too well. We were made to feel welcome, but not much to be said about this place really. It's ok, thats all.

This was only my second visit since the refurb and the first when I had a meal there. The food is excellent, a bit dearer than average perhaps but well worth it. The menu covers the usual pub favourites plus a number of more interesting dishes, which are definitely worth trying. The beers, Harvey's, Young's Ordinary and London Pride are well kept and I'm told the wine it very good too. This is definitely a pub I will be going back to.

Best Sunday Roast I've ever been served in a pub... And serving again from 6pm, which is a perfect time for late lunch, non? Love it!!

I've been here twice since the pub was taken over a few months ago - and have enjoyed it both time. The landlord Dave and his partner are going great guns with the food, which is excellent, and with the Friday night music. The beer is kept in tiptop condition and you can choose (on a sunny day) between a pleasant garden, a cosy corner settee or a dining table. And just a short car hop from Wakehurst Place - you must try it!

Firstly I would like to say that this pub has just been taken over. the food is great and every friday there is live music such as the tarbabies and be sharp. well worth going to see the band and having a bite to eat. they have a seperate restaurant to the bar which is a 16th century barn conversion. they have youngs, lanlord, and harveys as well as different largers. the wine list is excellent too. I wish them all the luck in the world, and is well worth a visit.

Used to be a great pub, haven't been for a while now as it turned into a very expensive eating house rather than a pub.
