Amazing pub. Was here for a friends baby naming ceremony on the Saturday and went to visit on the Friday and Sunday.

FRIDAY - Live music was on, a very lively jazz act. They were brill. Full table service which was brill to see in a British pub. They were busy, but the staff were knowledgeable about the drink range. Excellent pint of DoomBar.

SATURDAY - We had one half of the pub closed off for my friends party. The buffet food was great, varied and interesting. The staff were busy but didnt forget about us at all.

SUNDAY - Sunday lunch was yummy, again full table service we had a table of 14 in the conservatory. The staff weren't as attentive as they were on Friday but still knowledgable and competent.

A classic pub that has moved with the times to keep evolving. Liked the full table service, the range of draught products.
Disliked the outside wasnt to a fantastic standard and could do with a facelift.

Visited this pub on a Sunday and whilst clearly understaffed - I watched and waited with patience as the staff ran around trying to keep everyone happy and satisfied. I found the manager attentive when I explained the problem and as well as not charging me for the meals, he gave me a voucher for my family to return for drinks on him.
We were more than satisfied with this - I can tell a previous reviewer wasnt - I feel people want to much for nothing as opposed to accepting that business experience problems - if an experienced and very large manager felt the need to ask the reviewer to calm down then i would suggest he was being more than a tad aggressive.

A manager who cares about his business, the food was reasonable, the drink range wide and the atmosphere very good - just need to sort out the staffing and technical issues they were having and lose the err something for nothing type people and they'd have an amazing pub.

We met up with family and were planning to have a nice sunday roast. We sat at our table and decided what we were going to eat. It was fairly busy and we waited a short while for the waitress to take our order. About thirty minutes later a waiter came to our table with two plates of food one of which was fish and the other one a roast. We said that they were probably for another table, as none of us had ordered fish, but five of us had ordered the roast pork. So he left the one plate with the pork, luckily my son didn't touch the food, as thirty seconds later the waiter came back and took the plate away. Reminded me of a Basil Fawlty sketch. After an hour and a quarter, and two visits to the bar to ask when we could expect our food, the waiter brought four of the six meals to the table. Two of us watched the other four eat, and by then we had all lost our appetites due to being so angry. I finally decided to have a word with the 'manager', asked what had happened to our food, and was told there had been a glitch with the computer system and they had lost eight orders, but they had still managed to send four meals to our table. When I protested, I was told to calm down and he would speak to me when he'd sorted out the problem with another customers order. While I was waiting, a poor couple who were trying to get their food, just walked out in disgust. After I sat down to wait for an apology another lady went to enquire about her food. When we finally got an explanation, the 'manager' told us about the problem he had with staff. We made it clear that we had no intention of paying for the meals, which by the way, were of very poor quality, we've had better food at half the price, and were told that was fine. We were also given a card which would entitle us to a round of drinks free on our next visit. The card was thrown away. We will not be going back. As another reviewer said, this pub could be great in the right hands. You have been warned!

Had a good spell for a couple of years in 2009/10, the quiz hosted by the American guy was excellent, but in the last 10months it's gone seriously downhill. Unstocked fridges/bar mid afternoon on a Friday, food choices have really dipped from what was a really good varied menu, and you're lucky if you get it served in reasonable time.

Shame, used to really like the place and it was our nearest pub, but it never fails to disappoint these days.

My word this place has gone downhill. Popped in today with some friends and family (we had booked) and had to wait over 90 minutes for a bog standard sausage and mash. All the hallmarks of bad management were there: slow and ineffecient staff, badly kept drinks (we had to twice take back some soft drinks because they were flat) and terrible service. There was no apology for the late food and the staff were surley and unhelpful.

Could and should be a lovely pub, as it was a couple of years ago, but needs a change in management.

Friday lunchtime and the place was packed with mums and their toddlers; the latter running around, banging on the furniture.

I have nothing against children in a pub; this was like a creche!

Landlord/Black Sheep not up to scratch despite barrel changes.

I'm a regular and don't recognise many of the negative comments here. On the whole the food is excellent, especially the Sunday roasts. The last thing I ate there was a freshly cooked beef and ale pie and it was fantastic.

They have a good choice of real ales and the staff are generally warm and polite.

The only area they really need to address is how cold it can get in the winter!

Otherwise a really nice pub.

Popped in on Sunday night, live Jazz - which was ok but we sat outside. The outside area is lovely. The undercover seating areas with the sofas and large heaters were quite impressive.

I was drinking the Guinness which was fairly awfully poured and the pub did lack atmosphere, not sure that I'd go out of my way to return.

What is happening? Are pubco's really that bad that they run out of beer? The fifth time in various suposedly decent pubs in the last year and a bit. OK so they make their money on food, but is that any excuse, particularly a place such as this that promotes real ale, to have none?

Went as part of the Dulwich festival. Not been there for years, certainly not when the Goose and Granite. So a gastro makeover, not a surprise, and not totally ruined. But poor service and, did I say already, no ale. Cask marque - my bottom.

Onto the former pub, now restaurant, known as the Herne. You will see a theme!

Very Very Very BAD!!!!

Went to The Plough today for a nice sunday lunch and a few drinks. As soon as we got there the place looked nice and had comfy seating area for food.

Went to the Bar to order drinks and food, service was very slow and non polite. Was told there was a 30 minute wait for food, in the end it ended up being an Hour, then the road was burnt, veg under cooked (SOLID), and the gravy was cold. then after we had ate the main we decided to have a desert, so we went to the bar and was told we were unable to order desert for another 30 mins as they have temp closed the kitchen of orders, so after 30 mins we asked again, then 45 mins then was told they wasnt going todo desert for the rest of the day,

I found this place to be a complete disaster and wouldnt go back again, Dulwich is a nice place and im sure there are so many places that are better than this.

DO NOT GO!!!!

I wish I had been afforded some courtesy by the staff! We visited yesterday, looking forward to a nice meal as the pub had been recommended to us. I ordered a pint of Addlestones which is my favourite and I always drink in other pubs. It didn't taste very nice, so my husband asked whether we could change it. The barmaid got irate, raised her voice and said noone else had complained and she could give us a 'free' half of something else. She was really rude!

As a new Mum, I discovered this pub courtesy of the mother and baby group which takes place there every friday. And Ive been back again and again since. Its a cracker. The staff are amongst the best Ive ever known a pub to have. Each and every one of them has a good sense of humour and a courteous manner. The beer and wine selection is also good. My only criticism would be the food. We were served very over cooked wedges, but when complained these were replaced quickly and without a fuss. My mates soup was also a bit runny. And when you advertise a ham sandwich you dont expect it to be over cooked ham off the bone...
Aside from that this is the best pub in the area at the moment. Specially if you have kids. Your made to feel really welcome rather than endured like most of the other pubs in the area.
charlottekm - 18 Mar 2008 11:35
Visited yesterday - it's great. Lovely fish and chips too. :)

The Plough has had a complete refurbishment and is now a really decent pub. Very nice interior and always a good range of bitters. I have not tied the food, but a friend has told me it is excellent. Every time I have been in, the staff have been very friendly.
This pub used to be rather rough (both decor and clientele) and it now seems to be pub of quality. I recommend it.

Benny70 - 15 Feb 2008 15:00
We have had a few problems with ex-staff being vindictive and posting comments on this site, please come along and make your own mind up.
There is live music every weekend, baby clubs, wine tastings, weekly quiz and lots more.
The photo and phone number on this site are out of date, it has been completely refurbished and the new phone number is 020 8693 4236.

the plough in dulwich has that pub not got a serious rat problem do not know about eating there dodgy.and that manager eddie always seems really incompetent cant see it lasting long. 3/10.
brusier - 13 Jan 2008 19:26
this is not a good pub it is poorly managed and the staff are too slow.one of the managers mark apparently assulted another member of staff.and was taken away by the police this happened recently i would not reccomend this pub .2 out of 10.
brusier - 13 Jan 2008 19:06
This is a truly remarkable place, it really is. Where can I begin? Firstly, the food! For a start it is served on REAL plates and not those fake 'hetties' you get in other bars, and the food is warm not cold. The drinks here are possibly the finest example of drinks anywhere ever. The staff are GODS. And the decor...absolutely unbelievable! This place just has to be visited, it is truly wonderful. I shall DEFINITELY be recommending this place the relevant people.
kenspubs55 - 21 Sep 2007 17:26
very nice bar indeed
azazello - 14 Aug 2007 16:28
8 might be pushing it but 7 seems stingy for this pub since the revamp

Love the new layout - so much space, and the best (by some distance) range of lager and cider (with some good ale too) anywhere round here

Good smoking section outside too
Brunceling - 12 Jul 2007 22:29
closed now for refurbishment.will be another pub for the snobs of east dulwich like the rest on lordship lane.only the castle left for the working class man to go to now but for how long.

Changed? OK I'll give it to you that they've got better beers and they've replaced the seat covers on the chairs, but you've got to admit, Lawrence
Llewelyn-Bowen needs to pay it a visit.
Maureen_Hooper - 23 Apr 2004 11:12
Wow , has this place changed!!!! wonderful atmosphere, great selection of quality beers, friendly and beautiful staff, wonderful food, room for the night and breakfast included, keep it quiet!
pilot - 23 Apr 2004 00:19
As a guy who only lives 10 minutes away, I have to say that its not on my choice of pubs.
The only reason people I know who drink there, do it becouse Carling is only 1.60 a pint!.

As a beer drinker, I have to say that there is not a real Ale in the place, apart from Nitro Based Cream Flow Beer? But I suppose some do call that beer!

I went there a few weeks a go for a Guinness, I must admit it was Good. But not much cheaper than any over pub in the area.(2.40 a pint)
Seems to me that unless you want to go to a pub with a large number of retired and immature men, to watch football, and Gazzling Larger back. Your better saving the pennies and jumping on a bus, and going to a decent pub were there is woman ?

David - 12 Feb 2004 17:15

richard - 9 Jan 2004 19:45

Tara - 8 Jan 2004 13:52
Gone a bit downhill since the blonde barman left about 5 months ago.
Maureen - 8 Jan 2004 13:37
I would not go in. It is so unattractive from the outside. The managers are obviously pikey louts who don't care that their car park is a tip, that the outside walls are full of grafitti and that the whole place oozes nastiness and slobbishness.
Nero - 15 Jun 2003 17:20
