Thank God that special needs family has gone from there. A lesson in how to run a pub down quickly. Come on Harveys what are you doing.bring back the previous people at least they integrated into village life.plus the beer and food was good

I went to this pub approx 10 months after I last went, Yes the young landlord is still there, but he looks more comfortable than before.
The pub has changed in a few ways, sanded floors which makes it more welcoming with a lovely open fire.
The best was a pure delight, I tried the Venison and Old Ale pie and the flavours was just delightful, will definately be back.

Just had lovely evening in the Brecknock - top Venison and Ale pie and few beers. Well worth a visit to a really traditional village boozer. Amen.

I read the top two comments about this pub and thought I would take a visit for myself. I walked in and first of all the gentleman behind the bar noticed me straight away and said good evening. The pub had Porter, Old, Mild and Best on for the Real Ales. I asked if I could try the Porter he said of course without moaning.
I then ordered a Homemade Steak and Ale Pie and it tasted like it was homemade. The atmosphere in the pub was very nice. I will be going back, I then found out that the young lad behind the bar was actually the landlord and his pints are very nice.

Under new management for the past three weeks, and the new landlord is just 20 years old. He says the previous incumbent ran the place down, and he and his young partner are hoping to rebuild the business.

On the plus side, the Harveys was well-kept and pleasant (the choice is Harveys or Harveys; although Harveys is not usually my favourite pint I liked the WWII style bitter. The food was OK. The bill for four for lunch was 55 quid including drinks. A nice log fire was burning.

On the downside, there was a horrid smell of burnt oil from the deepfat fryer. Piped music playing. Food took 30 mins to come. In fairness, we were warned that it would be cooked to order, but despite that it was only OK: pies in bowls without proper pastry, chips a bit floppy.

The young landlord - not surprisingly, given his youth - has not yet developed an easy manner. We were pretty much the only people in there at lunchtime. A lick of paint wouldn't hurt: it all looks a bit rundown.

All in all, not enough to make me want to rush back.

I do hope they can make a go of this, but they will need imagination and flair as well as youth and energy.

If you like a quiet beer in the evening, this may not be the pub for you. If you like your beer to be accompanied by loud rock music, this place could just be perfect. I fall into the former category. But there seemed to be plenty of people from the latter category lapping it up on our Saturday evening visit last weekend. The interior is quite traditional with an open plan bar and a small (slightly quieter) area at the back with pictures of the Harveys brewery on the walls. Beers were rather predictably Harveys Best Bitter, XX Mild & Old Ale. The cider was far more unusual, as it was the first time I have witnessed Thatchers Green Goblin on draught. I can imagine this a great little pub to enjoy on a quiet summer's afternoon. But this noisy winter's evening visit did not leave me with a good impression.

Simplicity is the watchword here. This pub doesn't look very inspiring from the outside butI liked it as soon as I went in. There were four Harvey's ales on, Mild, Best, Old & Bonfire Boy. I had the Old which was good. A couple of simply decorated rooms open off the main bar area. We chose the one with the log fire and the menu board. The menu was good pub fare, nothing fancy (simple in other words). The ham was home cured and I had that with egg and chips and it was very good. The steak pie looked homemade and very tempting. The service at the bar and of the food was friendly and efficient.
I have passed this pub many times over the years but had never had a reason to go in and now realise that I have been missing out. Very Good.

Nipped in on the way to nearby Scotney Castle for a spot of lunch. Didn't have any beer but the Steak and Ale pie was terrific - really tender meat in a lovely rich gravy with mashed swede as well as mashed spud and veg. very good. Never been there before but it looks like the refurb has kept it very much as a traditional place.

Much improved pub since the new landlord and lady have been in place. The refurbishment has worked a treat without destroying its character. Good to see the full range of Harvey's beer available and always in great condition. Good for eating too.

The inside has recently been refurbished sensitively creating a much bigger bar area and better dining facilities. The owners are very welcoming and the beer is in great nick. The food is excellent- steak and kidney pudding amongst other traditional dishes recently and wonderful sponge puddings.

Me and my companion and her two rascals were driving down to lewes to visit friends the other day when we happened on the brecknock arms, after much pester power(from me not the siblings!) we decided to stop for refeshment. We walked in,were welcomed with a smile from the lady behind the bar wonderful smells coming from the kitchen. As we took our seats in the restaurant with our drinks(my pint of harveys best was nectar!) and perused the menu(which contained such treats as barnsley lamb chops steak, smoked haddock fishcakes roast duck plus all the usual treats including scallops.I opted for the scallops to start while my partner had the semi dried tomato and gruyere tart. Both dishes were cooked with skill and precision, and the service was relaxed and informal. Then came the mains, Iopted again for fish, this time the smoked haddock and bacon fishcakes with a simple sald and salsa, my partner for the barnsley chop served with champ potatoes fresh asparagusand the most delectable gravy. The chop was stunning she said and my fishcakes were to die for. Also the kids ate well with thier ham egg and chips. All in all one of the best discoveries we have found.

Another outlet regurgitating Brake Brothers frozen food and presenting it as home made! surely its illegal?

The Harvey's Old Ale was in excellent condition. Best was also available. On previous visits the atmosphere has been a bit frosty, but this time it was very welcoming. I suppose it just depends who's in!

Great place. Terrific food (4-star) excellent booze and nice staff. A few minutes from the railway station. Worth a visit. Spent a great afternoon there recently listening to a load of old codgers complaining about mobile phones and text messages - pure entertainment.

Visited 15 Oct 05. We decided to pluck a couple of pubs in East Sussex out of the Good Beer Guide. We chose this one because it had a reputation for good pies and puddings.More of which later.

The pub boasts a public bar, which was pleasent enough, and a restaurant/saloon bar for dining, plus a small but attractive beer garden. It is a Harveys' house, with all the good beer that entails. We had Armada ale which was in excellent condition. The landlady was very welcoming, and helpful. Lets face it, a smile goes a long way.

The menu was quite extensive for a pub, all the traditional favourites were there, but based on the guide we went for a couple of pies. The guide writers weren't wrong. Delicious, and served wth the potato of your choice, and four (yes,4) veg. this of course meant that we were in no position to order a dessert, but all the old English puddings were there.

The clientele were a mix of friendly locals and day trippers. A hearty thumbs up.
