A staggering £4.10 for a pint of GK Abbot served in a well past it's sell by date glass.
Even the barmaid seemed embarresed when taking my money.
When I expressed my shock/horror/amazement at the price,a chap who was also behind the bar (the landlord/manager?) came out with the comment "yeah"!

We went on a wednesday evening for a meal and the food and service was excellent ,i had the steak pie and chips, the chips were proper homemade and perfect, a good size wedge of proper steak pie and a decent separate dish of lovely veg , we thought the prices were a little high, but you do get what you pay for and the quality was first class, it got very busy but still the service was excellent, would definitley recommend, looking forward to visiting again.

I Have to agree with other reviewers that the food is at the top end of pub prices but. there is home cooked food available which I expect to pay a premium over the commercilly frozen and heated meals so many pubs and other chains rely on. The disappointment was the quality. We had a fish dish and abeef stroganoff. The fish dish was tasty but overcooked tuna finished up being left. The steak in the stroganoff was also overcooked which togetheer with poor quality meat meant a lot of excercise for the teeth. Vegetables were mixed in quality and on the soft side but well within acceptable limits. Service fine, decor pleasant, check out the old speckled hen to drink, portions middle of the road, but I wont be rushing back

I have been a regular drinker, and occasional eater, in this pub for 10 years and I can personally guarantee the following: 1) the beer and food is always top-notch; 2) the beer and food is always very expensive; 3) there are (usually) no chavs, thugs, nutters or other wierdos. Perhaps 2) results in 3), which might explain the comments of others like "lucie911" (how did she check the kitchen hygiene, exactly?), or "apa" (". . . go into Chelmsford . . ." - where, exactly? Wetherspoon's, I'll guess - cheap as chips, and he can sit and moan with the rest of the bearded, real-ale bores.
Only come to this boozer if you're not frightened by 3.35 for a pint of perfect Abbott, and about a tenner for a shepherd's pie.

This ''pub'' is extremely overpriced for the packet food that they serve. The beverage side of things is almost double the price of many other, much nicer pubs. Also kitchen hygiene leaves a lot to be desired.

This is Greene king pub, so expect the usual ales. But they did have St Edmunds on, which is a light lager coloured ale not too strong at 4.2%, and tasted better than the IPA. On a sunny Saturday the pub was pretty busy with families dining, no doubt because of the large garden with childrens swings, slides, etc. Its pretty comfortable inside; nicely laid out with normal tables and chairs. The service was not fast, but one couldnt complain bearing in mind the numbers with which they were having to deal. I think this is a fairly decent pub; not top notch but pretty good.

the food was very very good when Paul was Head chef but now not all that . You should think of asking him back

Visited this pub for the first time last night. The surroundings are good with a reasonable selection of beer. The bar staff were efficient if not overly friendly. The drinking area wasn't particularly crowded but quite a few people in the restaurant area.

I would go back if in the area again.

I went to this pub with 12 other members of my family to celebrate my Dads 70th birthday on the 14th June, and I have to say I have nothing but praise for it.
The bar staff were very friendly and the waiting staff second to none, the food was the best I have had at a pub for a long time. The choice was very impressive and all served to each member of my family at more or less the same time.
We had a great evening and my dad was very happy.
I'll be back without doubt and can recomend The Six Bells to everyone.
As for berk(ly), The manager of The Six Bells is a "proper" manager and knows how to run a good establishment. Went back there today with my wife and daughter and sat in the beer garden, which is well kept and again very welcoming.

I LIVE NEXT DOOR TO THE SIX BELLS PUB IN BOREHAM ESSEX, AND IT DRIVES ME MAD HAVING TO LISTEN TO THE CONSTANT SQUEEKING COMING FROM THE SWINGS AND SEESAW IN HIS BEER GARDEN, IF THIS GUY WAS A PROPER MANAGER HE WOULD PROPERLY MAINTAIN THESE ITEMS INSTEAD OFF THINKING ABOUT PROFIT.

This has been one of my favourite haunts for many years. It's got something that not many pubs in the area can boast. An amazing atmosphere with friendly staff and beautiful food. Yes it may not be the cheapest food but I believe it is fair and you do get what you pay for, proper portions and great quaility. Great place to bring your family too, lovely garden for them to play in and friends to make. Fully recommended.

The people who've posted comments before are obviously the type of customer that frequent 'Deep Fry' managed houses. I have dined at the Six Bells on and off for the past seven years and I find it to be one of the most pleasant eating-experiences around the north of Chelmsford. Ok, I agree that the "wet" side of the trade is probably the most expensive in the area but I'm there for the high quality food - not a night out on the tiles!! Visit this pub for a quality meal (Whatever the price) You'll not leave here a hungry person!

don't bother unless you'v'e got more money than sense and will drink anything!

not worth a visit unless your stupid enough to pay through the nose for for food and drink and don't even care what beer you drink! i shall NOT be back there

This place is the biggest rip-off that i have been to so far.5.05 for a bottle of Becks and a glass of orange.Where do they think they are?Mayfair? They should remember that they are on the Boreham bypass and that their customers are not all super rich yuppies from the smoke.Apart from that the place is a foody dump with no atmosphere and not even a decent beer.Avoid it like the plague.Go into Chelmsford and enjoy decent beer at a fair price.
