Now Molly's Chambers Bar and Kitchen - after reopening and refurbishment.

Quite a weird set up compared to it's Old Colonial days. As the Old Colonial it was a straightforward kind of pub. Now you enter to the right there is a covered patio area and beer garden to the right but the actual bar is downstairs in what was the cellar.
To reach the toilets you have to go back upstairs towards the left side of the pub - and going downstairs to the cellar bar area is the only means of access - so if you are using the garden area you have to go down two flights of stairs, through the bar then back up two flights of stairs to the same level you started at.
As mentioned there are handpulls but they aren't used. The have a few 'premium' lagers (like Warsteiner) and the trams do now run up from Woodside on Sats & Suns. Seems to have a very extensive menu and it is most definitely still called Molly's Chambers. Okay if you're visiting the museum over the road.

After a visit to the Beer EnGin in Whiston (not listed on BITE) and a diversion to a football match, my penultimate stop of the night was this place that was closed the last time I tried to visit. It is still called Molly's Chambers Bar & Kitchen and it is located in a very unassuming location down a very dark and quiet street. The bar was busy with a ground level outdoor drinking area with its own bar and a busier cellar bar, where there was live music. Bouncers were on the door. No real ales were on offer. Although one of the three handpulls did have a Trooper pumpclip turned round. So, never say never. Definitely not my kind of place anymore. Far too noisy and crowded.

Snarling Mallard - the trams haven't run for 6 months. They were meant to recommence in May but are now due to start Sunday only service at the end of July 2018.

Does the tram still go up to it ?

Has just reopened as a pub! Now called Molly's Chambers Bar & Kitchen.
Seems to be trying to establish itself as a music venue.

No longer a pub: converted to business premises. The 'Old Colonial' is now just a destination on the Birkenhead Tramway!

Went past the OC over the last couple of days and the place appears to have closed despite a big plastic banner saying "Now Fully Open"! This isn't a surprise as the place has been going down the pan for a year or three.

I'd not been in for a year or so, I used to go to the trad jazz session regularly a few years back (after the more diverse Jazz sesh moved from the much-missed Bar57, now 2a PriceSt). Anyway trad jazz isn't my favourite music, but it was a friendly bustling pub, with pretty decent beer.

As you say FDIYG, it seems pot luck whether this place or The Dizzie is open at all, on evidence a couple of weeks ago, it was somewhere between open & closed. 2 staff, 2 friends & me! Beer was on the turn, atmosphere was long gone, there was however a good BBC drama on the somewhat knackered widescreen telly!

The Dispensary itself was indeed, fully closed, but is now open again - does this mean the OC is now closed ;~)

Cain's now own an additional 100 or so pubs, after a "reverse takeover" of a NW pubco - the running of these 2 places don't bode well, but we'll see.

More managers than Charlton Athletic of late. Last visited with a mate between Xmas and New Year. Ale was like dishwater and the food wasn't on. Bored barmaid and customers you could count on the fingers of one hand. Gives traditional pubs a bad name. I hope that it's improved but frankly I don't want to waste any more time (or money) finding out.
