Greene King pub on South Street with a cosy interior. An unusual feature is a photo booth to the left-hand side of the bar as you enter. It was in use and was reasonably priced. Hardy & Hanson's Olde Trip is the regular beer. Guests were Greene King Heritage, Redemption Hotspur & Timothy Taylor Landlord. Handpulls for both Old Rosie & Rosie's Pig ciders were hidden away at the side. Has a fair bit of character and was quite likeable.

This has been a local haunt for many a year. Sadly visited today and didn't recognise the place. Seems knowledgeable friendly staff gone and replaced with people who are not. I was very disappointed and will not return in a hurry. Beer no longer lovingly cared for. Member of Camra so will be reporting this

Two real ales available on my Wednesday evening visit. The XT99 was very tasty. Friendly, relaxed atmosphere in this pub, which attracts a wide variety of customers. Well worth a look.

Very pleasant "proper" pub with two guest beers. Both in good condition. Nice firendly bar staff and good crowd. Could probably have done without the young drunk proping up the bar but hey, he helps to pay the rates when I'm not there so tolerable for a Saturday night. This pub and the Dolphin across the road compliment each other nicely. Recommended.

Lovely pub with welcoming knowledgeable staff. Several locals having a variety of drinks, but I went for the Dark Star Hophead which was in excellent condition.

Far busier than the Eagle down the road. Two Greene King beers plus a guest ale. This is rather less than the description in the Good Beer Guide which implies that there are eight hand pulls and rather more beers available. A varied mix of clientele gives this place a nice atmosphere.

Quiet afternoon time visit but unlike others a cracking pint on a red hot day. Had a good feel this place. Nice one.

Walked in on a busy Friday night to find a disco in full swing and a younger than expected (25-ish) crowd. We only stayed for one (loud music not really our thing), but we weren't made to feel unwelcome and the beer was fine. Seems like it may well be different depending on the time/day of the week, but that's no bad thing and always good to see a pub busy and successful.

I love this place. Great staff and wacky customers. I think its the best pub in Eastbourne. No TVs or people talking about football and (so far) no screaming kids or yobs. Hit it at the right time and you won't be disappointed.

Best pub we found in Eastbourne and some decent tunes being played for our tastes. They should make the students at least buy a drink though. They seem to come in to use the wifi or chat to friends , but most didn't seem to spend a penny!

Went in recently, and was uncharacteristically disappointed. There was no real ale, and the delivery wasn't until the next day. This is a pub I use when in Eastbourne, and I feel sure this doesn't happen often, but to remain in the Good Beer Guide surely real ale should always be available. I will hope for better things on my next visit!

In terms of the few negative reviews, let me say this, this pub is the most welcoming pub this side of the Buddhist tent at Glastonbury festival. As it is so welcoming there is a grand variety of people who regularly frequent this establishment. The downside of this is that some of the people are unfortunately judgmental (see review below and the odd comment about "mature students" who are "ignorant," bitter?). Treat the staff with respect and a smile and they will provide for you a great menu (recently expanded), fantastic drinks (with guest ales, no Harvey's ever despite other reviews), comfy chairs/sofas, log fires in winter, a great garden in summer but most importantly that famous welcome.
Weekends see bands/deejays playing anything from metal to Regga even Pink Floyd to Nero. The pub is open until 1am Friday and Saturday and 12pm Sunday to Thursday.
For those who know, this is a Green King pub that rarely, if ever, actually serves Green King. The ales change regularly and are well kept.
For the ubiquitous doubters amongst you, no, I do not work here but I am a regular. We are not loud we are friendly and you are very very welcome.

Nice enough mid street town pub. My pint of Harveys was nice and the others went for Doombar which they said was okay. Was also Pride and Hobgoblin on.

Rapidly turning into my local, good beer and good people!

I really like the wacky alternative crowd. Friendly and young but very welcoming. Good selection of regular and guest ales.

Attractive outside , set in Little Chelsea. We had read it had a suntrap garden, looked for a website and coud not find one.Pleasant surprise, comfy chairs inside, simple but attractive decor, two rooms, leading through to garden area. Barmaid very friendly. Pub very quiet..it was about 1.30pm.Someone was working, a family were chatting We went through to catch the sun, to a yard which needs a bit of a tidy up, but has a huge vine...a table was under it! ...and other plants. Really could be made more of, so let's hope the owners do that , as town pubs with gardens can be attractive. We are older customers, but felt it was the sort of place all ages would feel comfortable with, and we would return.

Nice pub but marred by the some of the regular crowd who seem to be mature students, work in computer games shop or are failed musicians. They are ignorant, loud and offensive. A shame because it would be a pretty good place. Get rid of the loud scum and we'll be back.

The previous listing is correct about the ownership. This is a good addition for Eastbourne. A friendly bar with a mixed clientele - funky/young/old - and it works. Real ales change regularly and there is also a nice small outdoor area. No TVs at the moment which is always a plus.

Not sure but believe this pub might be under new management as the folks from the Eagle, just down the road were popping back and forth with Halloween decorations. 2 real ales on and the Proper Job was perfect. Smallish pub with a good atmosphere and perhaps appealing to a younger age group. I liked the place and would definitely check it out again when next in Eastbourne.

So so spit & sawdust pub in my book although I could come again & they put lots of beers on for the CAMRA AGM - however they were all Greene King who are not a local brewery - why not put a local one in? Beer was looked after though.

Second visit and was not disapointed, lovely pint, gorgeous barmaids and nice to see they have sorted the gents out. Job well done.

One of the more interesting places to go on a Friday/Saturday night.
tenebris - 10 Feb 2009 03:45
Friendly, lively pub convenient for the sports grounds at the Saffrons. Three ales: GK IPA, one other from the GK stable plus a guest, which was Tom Wood's Bomber County on my visit, in good nick though not a personal favourite. Gents toilet needs sorting out though, it was pretty grim.

Really enjoyed the evening.First time in the place.Friendly staff, friendly locals. Good choice of real ales and lagers. Will definatley be making a return visit.

This is a nice pub with a big U-shaped bar serving up Olde Trip, Old Speckled Hen, GK IPA and a few premium lagers. The bar maid was very friendly and the Olde Trip was extremely good.
The food smelt good and the couple eating it a few tables away from me in the nice courtyard out back seemed to be enjoying it.

I didnt spot any TVs anywhere and there was no sport advertised, but there was some funky background music playing.

The misses and I enjoyed it in here and would definitely go back.
Strongers - 11 Aug 2008 15:18
Not sure about this. Beers good, staff indifferent. Freezing cold inside, a bit "un-pubbish". There are better pubs in the area, but you might struggle to find better kept ales.

Three handpumps incl St Austell Tribute. Good value lunchtime specials board (5-6), nice little sun-trap beer garden with growing vine. Short visit, but I liked the place.

I really liked this pub. Good beer too

Beer is kept in tip top condition and the staff are some of the best around. I was particularly impressed by the pubs range of spirits and the knowledge the staff had of them. A real refreshing change. RY

A great community pub in Eastbournes Little Chelsea. Good selection of real ales and draught Budvar lager on offer together with a selection of wines.Attentive bar staff and friendly atmosphere.Has more of a wine bar feel than a boozer good value food menu.
