Smart pub with a good range of interesting ales, of varying styles. There was also a range of 8 ciders on offer too. I had the Harvey's mild which was good. My colleague had Mortimer's cider and neither of us had any cause to complain. Pleasant atmosphere and attentive staff.

All decent enough - nice decor, plenty of ale choice - all interesting.

Quiet on a monday night at 9pm - I guess the target audience of after work drinkers had braved the trains.

Surprising pub, lots of variety in real ale with a board of guests. Old fashioned set up, decorated with what I suppose must be vintage chic old Hitachi TV sets and 1970s board games. Slightly over £10 for four drinks, which, in these hard times, is quite reasonable. Unfortunately, it was not my round. I will go again.

Very pleasant discovery! I only found this pub a few days ago but will definitely make another visit soon!
A larger pub inside than expected. The décor is of the bare brick variety very popular these days. Board games are also available although on the day I visited most people were watching rugby on the TVs dotted around the pub.
Although the pub is large with room for plenty of people the toilets leave a lot to be desired. Very cramped!
Toilets aside the rest of the pub left a very good impression. 7 real ales and 7 ciders available, many of which were not the common fare. Hackney, Truman and Crouch Vale all amongst the ales present.
The staff were friendly and gave advice about the ales and were keen to offer samples.
All in all a very pleasant visit!

First of two new pubs last night, the Williams Ale & Cider House is within easy reach from Liverpool Street station. Although it's hidden away up a narrow side street. This at least meant that it wasn't overcrowded. The pub had an impressive array of beers listed on a blackboard. But many of these are keg options. Ales were Sambrooks Pumphouse Pale, Greene King IPA, Redemption Fellowship Porter, St Austell Proper Job, Southwark London Pale Ale, Hackney Pale, Portobello APA & Spitalfields Brew. The only real cider was Old Rosie. Nice enough drinking environment. Didn't try the toilets. But a fellow drinker did and his comments are similar to the previous reviewer. A good option if in this part of the city and I believe this pub may be open on a Saturday. We continued on to the Hare in Bethnal Green. But no review for that one as it is not listed on here.

Met some friends here early on a Friday evening. Not the best time to meet as the place was heaving. We did get a table later when the place thinned out. Excellent choice of beers. I enjoyed the London Fields and Spitalfields bitters. Price is a bit steep at £4 a pint, but then this is London. The music was a bit loud at first but was turned down later. Service was good despite the place being packed. There appeared to be a nice selection of pies and scotch eggs behind the bar. Gents toilet was a bit pokey, but overall an excellent pub.

Interesting pub tucked away on Artillery Lane just off Bishopsgate. This is a pub you need to know about or you won't find it as it's tucked away and not very prominent from the main road.

14 hand pumps on the bar that had 9 ales and 1 cider on...most ales were locAle's with East London well represented. 2 craft lagers and a cider on hand pump behind the bar. My beer choices were Wadworth Swordfish @ 5% and East London Brewery Jamboree @ 4.8%...both were very good pints.

Walls stripped back to brick with lots of old photos of the local area and breweriana hanging on the walls. Music playing softly and a rather annoying chap tuning the piano....constant piano dinging isint the best background music!

Aside from 'Pianoman' this is an excellent pub and definitely worth seeking out when in the Liverpool St area & it's a stones throw from Spitalfields.

Excellent pub that is now firmly on my "radar".

Please note that this pub is chain free and is not a GK pub anymore

HOXTON?

BITE fails again, how anywhere east of Bishopsgate and in E1 can be Hoxton is anyone's guess

The pub definitely worth a try - beer is good and wine is not too bad
You can always find Big D for a large pint and a large laugh - which adds to the charm of the pub
The street is quiet so people are hanging outside for a fag and games.
Williams Wine and Ale House regulars are surely its biggest value.

Great food, friendly staff, good beer selection, clean decent pub. We often eat lunch here, and it's always good food, well cooked and brought out quickly. Does suffer a little from infestation with suits, but that's more down to its location. Atmosphere is always comfortable.

Popped in for a quick one on Friday 25th, Standard Greene King set up and beers, but this pub has a really good atmosphere and decent staff.
Had a good laugh at the bloke who had obviously had one too many and couldn't stand up (been there myself a few times).
Would recommend and will be back when next in the area.

One of two fairly identikit Greene King houses in the warren of streets south of Bishops Square, along with nearby Kings Stores. I think I probably marginally prefer William's, although the previous reviewer is spot on when he describes it as "bland".

Pretty bland "chain" style place - strange mix between a diner and a bar for office people....

I agree that this is a real find in the Liv. St area. Spacious and good value, it has very attentive bar staff and a friendly feel to the place overall. Much better that Dirty Dick's and all the other nearby competition. My only complaint is the relatively limited bitter selection on offer, I had a nice IPA but only saw a choice of 1 or 2 other ales. Overall though, a nice pub that is not too crowded even on a Friday evening.

One of the best pubs in the area. Just had a (lunch time) pint of well kept IPA. Good polite service. Sky news showing. Nice interior and clean. Worth a visit if in the area.
ChrisM62 - 28 Aug 2009 12:45
Refurb here has been very good - the interior is much more comfortable and the previously rank toilets have improved immeasurably in quality if not in size.

It remains at the head of a number of good pubs just east of Bishopsgate around Middlesex St. One thing to note is that it doesn't have Sky but they do show ITV Champions League games for which it is much less crowded than most of the opposition.

Still an excellent City watering hole

I agree that this is the best pub anywhere near to Liverpool St station. Not bad for a quiet, comfy pint, at least in the afternoon hours when I went. Staff polite and attentive.

They must have sorted the loos out now, cos the gents (at least) was clean, but a little cramped. At least a visit didn't involve the usual London subterranean trek - the bogs are at ground level.

Beer well-kept, but usual main-stream brands on tap. Didn't try the food.

Great place for watching sport with good screens and a lovely clear sound system. Beer was fine and staff very friendly. Possibly the best pub within a stones throw of Liverpool St station (not much competition). Would have scored an 8 had it not been for the filthy toilets. Bring a peg for your nose if you want to play pool (located outside gents). Really no excuse for having poor toilets given the relatively civilised clientele. If they sort it out I might become a regular.

Green King pub with plenty of character, tucked away down a side street from Liverpool St station. Paid 2.90 for an excellent pint of Ruddles and enjoyed a couple of rounds of pool, on the, shock horror, well placed pool table away from people trying to get to either the bar, toilets, smoking area ect.
mrse1 - 5 Mar 2008 17:13
First of all this pub is not in Hoxton - which is a major plus.

Hard to find for those not in the know William's is a proper pub and very useful for a quick lunchtime pint as people from my office are not likely to find it.

The menu's a bit ropey but more than made up for by the fact that there is no deafening music and you can get a decent pint.

Hopefully it doesn't get re-branded or refurbished like some many others in the area

Worth walking to this place.

What a find for Liverpool St.
Bearing in mind it was a Friday night, just before Christmas.
Initially met in the Wetherspoons at the station and almost went home.
Decided to wander and find something better, and found just that.
The bar staff are excellent, attentive and friendly.
Standard drinks on offer but also not the usual overpricedness of the area.
Didn't try the food beyond the crisps but even they tasted better than usual in Liverpool Street.
Definitely recommnd this pub to anyone who doesn't relish the usual guff around this area.

Been under new management for about 4 months. They've sorted the beer and the staff are very nice and welcoming. this is a great place to go for a Thursday night bevvy. Safe and friendly. Bit pricey for wine though!!!
henriktheking - 9 Nov 2005 16:20
it's got a pool table and a golf machine but the beer is, I am afraid to say, terrible. Go for the games and order bottles only - much as it pains me to say that. The bar staff generally have limited English but are friendly enough and will change your crap pint for another crap pint on request. Food is OK with frighteningly quick service. Sort the beer out and it could be great.....

This is a lovely little venue that tucks itself away from the well trodden Bishopsgate track. Carlsberg, Wadworth 6X and Pride on offer amongst others. Not a bad venue. Has the campest barman this side of Brighton. Does'nt take Amex.
