Pub is now demolished and is now a building site for 10x 3-bed houses

Had lunch here yesterday, food was very good, gammon, egg and chips, had 3 pints of IPA served in good condition and then 3 pints of Abbot...again served in good condition. So the food and drink was good as was the service, add this to the splendid setting (sitting on the large balcony out the back) and you have all the ingrediants for wonderful afternoon lunch and drinking session...oh yer the company was good as well...9/10.

Good food and service

Only popped in for a pint, nice interior if a little devoid of character. IPA and Abbot on tap which were very good. Beer garden looks very nice, will come back when summer is back on. Didn't eat but the menu looked good with reasonable prices.

It been four months since the refurb and the new landlord ( Thierry ) and his crew moved in and this pub is now great !

We've been in there more times in the last 4 months for both meals and drinks that we'd been in there the past four YEARS. Great value and decent pub food (standard Greene King fare but nice ) with deals on food and drinks all week. Sunday lunch pretty decent , but only three veggie options.

Gets busy at peak times but they take table reservations. We just had a two course meal for FIVE , plus drinks for less than 60 ! Staff are friendly and efficient , but are sometimes caught out by just how popular its getting , with the chef having to leg it to the Spar to get more chips the other evening ! I suppose after just a few weeks , they are still working out the demand .

Good range of beers , ales and wines and if you are eating you can start a tab if you swipe your debit card.

Pub quiz on a Thurs with "Joe the Knowledge" is a great laugh and not too competitive. Function room and heated covered decking overlooking the MASSIVE beer garden ( roll on summer ! )

Now one of the better pubs in this town . Well worth a little mooch I would suggest.

After five years , we finally have a local !! happy days :o)

Popped in after the recent refurb and it looks great ! Really nicely done - very upmarket . Good ranges of beers and wines and a decent , great value menu . Good ,prompt service and friendly staff. Lived nearby for three years and until now never really rated this pub. Been in there more times in the past month that I have for the past three years .. Just hope it lasts ! Quiz nights Thursdays ?

The problem with the Robert is that it keeps changing hands. I have lived next to it now for just over 2 years and they have had four new landlords in this time.
The staff in there have their own friends but still find time to chat. It has a lovely garden and Hastings Rock is presented from there and that is good fun. I think this pub has really good potential.
The pub is known as the pub of death as it is just down the road from the crematorium and does lots of wakes so this is good for business.
As I speak it is closed for anotheer refurbishment.

Decided to drop in here for a quick drink early Saturday afternoon as we had 45 minutes spare before catching the bus back into Hastings.
Took 10 minutes for barmaid to appear - all ales were off. Decided not to prolong the experience & went back to the bus stop. Rubbish!

WOW! Been to this pub before the new management took over and didn`t think much of it. I thought the place had a few bad elements in there, hearing that they had been 'asked to leave', i thought i`d try again. Just been back and the difference is amazing! New menu is great! The staff couldn`t have been more helpful, suggesting item`s on the menu that I might like to try as I couldn`t decide. Was refreshing to see staff genuinely enjoying their work, smiles all round in fact. The pub was very busy, but the girls working made time for me and were very friendly. The pub was looking good too, looks like a few small changes here and there have made a big difference. I met the new landlady, big improvement on the last lot. She was bubbly and bright and looked to be in complete control. The food was lovely, came up hot and was very quick, went down a treat! My partner loved the beer so much we went back the next day and the service was exactly the same, excellent!

I totally agree with the below comment. I was at this pub a couple of weeks ago and had complaints to make about the food, service and beer.

The member of staff who I spoke to didnt seem to care less and neither did the management when I was eventually given the opporunity to speak to them!

Avoid, avoid, avoid!

I am not entirely sure where the last person who posted a comment visited, but it cannot be the Robert De Mortain.

Had a table booked for a work outing in August and had to wait over 2 hours for the food. When the chef was questioned regarding the delay for the food the only reply recevied was what only can be described as a grunt, but then again, looking at the chef it was clear that wasnt exactly employed for his interpersonal skills. Later on, a member of the party spoke to the landlord(lady) who wasnt much more help and her reply can only be construed as rude and unhelpful.

This is by far the worst experience I have encountered at this public house. I have been going to this location for the past 7 years or so on and off and unfortunately due to the current managements lack of exoerience and attitude towards the customers, will take my custom elsewhere in the future.

Avoid at all costs!

Not sure which planet previous reviewers are from, but this is quite a nice quiet pub. Food has improved and the pub was ultra-busy Friday as they were having a barbeque. Featuring loads of local bikers, and friendly locals all having a laugh. 9/10

Went here today for Sunday carvery as I had heard the food was good and it was a nice place. Well the carvery veg was fine but the choice of Gammon, Turkey or Beef from the carvery made me opt for part turkey and part gammon today. The Gammon was almost raw and served in a lump, not carved, and I had 2 lumps of turkey to go with it from the "boy" that had hacked it with a blunt knife. The gammon was virtually inedible as it was almost raw but the turkey lumps were sort of ok. I would not recommend this pub from todays experience.

One of the worst pubs i've ever been to. The food was diabolical. The service was rubbish and there has to be more atmosphere in space. When i complained that the mashed potatoe was rock hard as if it had been left in a hot often the waitress/barmaid explained that it couldn't of been as it was made from pellets! Not the slightest start of an apology in fact there were very little signs of any life at all in the woman. Except from an 'I've been sucking on lemons today look'. We won't be going back there again. i agree with most af the other comments, avoid and tell your friends to avoid!!!

Drove past on my way home from work yesterday, it seems that it has been bought and refurbished by Greene King, will have yo pay a visit at the weekend.
Hastings - 28 Dec 2006 10:47
Closed for a total refurb at the moment, all fenced of, maybe it will reopen for a better class of customer.
ensuitekitchen - 12 Dec 2006 11:07
This is a rubbish beer and food by numbers outlet inhabited by neanderthals, whilst in hers two weeks ago I overheard the pond life requesting that a teenage girl show them her "Jack and Danny" quote, to guffaws of laughter from all the cronies and much to the girls distress, that was my first visit in 7 years and I wont be rushing back.
RubyAvards - 27 Nov 2006 08:17
Good Pub. Friendly staff who are prepared to chat to customers. Beer is good quality a little expensive though.

Great for watching the Football on a match day with a big screen
wagsforever - 26 Nov 2006 00:40
Truly awful place. This has the potential to be a fantastc pub but is ruined by some of the worst bar service I have ever encountered, drinks at ridiculously high prices, bland microwaved food and a clientele of chavs and chavettes. Avoid.
JoMaj - 14 Nov 2006 10:46
Absolute chav city, full of 20-30 year olds who think the plastic branded food is "top nosh" and all drinks must be consumed directly from the bottle, inhabited by more oafs and louts than the Millwall ground. Do yourself a favour and keep on driving by.

This place is an oddity, large and spacious its interior is old and the place generally looks a bit... well, odd, heh.

Beer was pretty good but the food was typically... chain pubish. Nothing spectacular on the menu, and I could imagine this place being full of louts on a football day. Is however infamous for being the home of Hastings Rock so immediately gets kudos for that.

Came across this the other day whilst on my travels. Found it to be an excellent pub with a good atmosphere, beer and food. Hope all pubs are like this in hastings.
