user reviews of the Royal Oak, Barcombe

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Someone has fitted a cooler to the ceiling in the cellar and it makes an awful noise which reverbarates around the bar constantly. It is very annoying and a bit offputting. It needs to be sorted out as it is sure to keep people away.

Having said that the food is great and the beer excellent.

Nice village pub with a fairly large front bar and another room with a skittle alley to the side. The pub itself was quiet, whilst there appeared to be a function on in the side room. The bar is light and airy and the barman/landlord was friendly. Beers on were all from Harveys - Sussex Best Bitter, Sussex Wild Hop, Sussex Dark Mild & Olympia.

This is definitely the best pub in Newick where I live. The beer is great, the landlady very welcoming, the service excellent and the style traditional.

Been here twice lately. Once for a very welcome pint after a walk on warm day & more recently for an evening meal with friends. Really pleasant service and well cooked and served meals. This is what village pubs should be.

Yes, paulfitz has nailed it - a 'no-nonsense, genuine English pub'. Unfortunately that too often these days means a large screen telly dominating affairs - that's the case here, and for me a negative.Still, I enjoyed several pints of impeccable Harvey's Old here earlier this year, and the service is unfailingly friendly and helpful, so altogether there's a lot more to praise than to criticise here, and it's a pub I'd be happy to spend time in whenever the occasion arose.

Well worth a visit, even with the 50 mile cycle ride to get to. Friendly service, beer always good. A no-nonsense, genuine English Pub. Sadly the garden is no more, still if it enables this excellent village pub to stay open it's a small price to pay.

This is a pleasant village pub. Only two of the Harvey's great range were available, but both were in good condition (Best and Olympia).

A very good country pub with good, honest food. This place is the way country pubs should be. (Clean loos, too.)

Excellent village local, providing top class gourmet food in the small restaurant with some unusual menu items! Beer is well kept, and the pub has occaisional Beer/Real Ale festivals.
