Still a good selection of well kept ales, pub is now music themed but apart from a generally dismal open mike on Sundays no music is played in the week despite having stereo capability and real high fidelity sound available in all rooms.

This pub has got to be one of the best pubs I've been in for a long while, as soon as I walked through the front door I felt instantly at ease & welcomed by friendly smiling faces. It has a fantastic atmosphere with plenty of regulars that are willing to make an effort to make you feel a part of the crowd. It has plenty of banter going on a daily basis & the pub has so much space it's easy enough to find a quiet spot to sit with a friend & have a catch up. It has just been awarded cask ale mark & from personal experience & talking to the others it has got to be the best pint for miles around! The best part about this pub for me is how dog friendly everyone is, I can be on my way home from a long walk with my dog & I can sit in peace knowing everyone is happy to say hello to her also! None of the dogs I have encountered have been aggressive, in fact they've been the complete opposite & very well behaved! The landlord is very approachable & I feel if I or any other person had any queries or worries they definitely could pull him to the side to discuss any matters there may be. You must visit to see for yourself!

Thought i would give this another go but sad to say nothing has changed.
First impressions where very bad when I could not get through the front door as two dogs where at each others throats fighting in the pub with their owners struggling to regain control.
On approaching the bar I was shocked to see a dog bowl on it, next to the sandwiches for sale. I decided not to have a drink as I was not impressed with the obvious hygiene breaches and did not fancy my pint placed next to a bowl covered in dog saliva.
I will be calling Chorley enviromental health tomorrow.

Well, after reading boltonbloke's comment I had to pay a visit and it would seem everything's back to normal(ish).
Excellent pint of Bateman's XXXB and a good craic with the half a dozen or so punters in the small snug.

Sadly David and Jackie have called it a day and left the pub, its currently being run by a temp landlord.
The alarm bells were ringing a coupe of weeks ago when we overheard the new landlord and a few customers mocking the previous tenants, in particular barring people for swearing. They seemed to think having standards was a source of amusement.
This was brought home to me on my last visit when a customer tried to pick a fight with my friend and I, completely unprovoked I may add.
Turns out this guy was banned by David and Jackie but let in under the new management, well he may of gained a new customer but he has lost 3 more as we won't be stepping foot in here again, it also must be added the landlord was nowhere to be seen.
Its all very well letting low life like this back into the pub but at least the landlord should have the decency to be there to handle the trouble they cause rather than leave the staff to it.
The big draw of this pub was always you could have a few decent pints without being bothered by dick heads, looks like those days are well and truly over.
I give it six month before its boarded up or worse still advertising Karaoke nights.

Nice old style pub, with excellent beer, only disappointing thing was all the cask beers are from the W&D stable

Should be in the top ten pubs on this site, a fine old fashioned pub thats always my first choice for a decent pint.

Why can't all pubs be run this well?
boltonbloke - 20 Nov 2010 16:48
Still well ahead of the pack. Would be nice to see some stronger beers rather than the usual; 4% selection.

Everything I want from a pub. Top class beers, with frequent new ones to try, open fires, newspapers, friendly service, clean toilets

Leaves the rest of Chorleys pubs trailing in its dust !

Fine real ale mecca in the middle of a stone terrace just out of the town centre. the pub retains its original layout, with a vault, snug to your right, games room (pool & darts) and large lounge at the back. A central bar serves the vault and lounge. Lack of doors make it feel more opened out but generally its really unspoilt. Wonderful cosy atmosphere in each room, with real fires, pump clips, saucy seaside posters and hundreds of vintage beermats adorning the walls. Jazz is often played which is a million times better than your usual piped music. Beer range is great, with 2 Jennings beers, Banks Bitter, Marstons Ashes Ale and the excellent Boondoggle from Ringwood, of which I couldn't get enough. Friendly service and pretty much everything a pub should be. Not to be missed if in Chorley.

Such a good pub. Don't go drinking in Chorley without going there.

Still stands head and shoulders above the rest in the area. Consistantly good real ales in a pleasent, idiot free atmosphere, having that rare quality of being ideal for a civilised evening out with the wife.
boltonbloke - 29 Jan 2009 15:04
Possibly the best kept cask ales in chorley.
Jenning ales and two or three guest ales, vast selection of single malt whisky
G7SYY - 6 Jan 2009 21:29
Still an excellent pub.
menelaus42 - 4 Nov 2008 23:13
On recent experience probably the best house in Chorley for consistently good beer.
manstein - 24 Jul 2008 16:35
Still excellent
boltonbloke - 18 Jul 2008 13:13
Beer remains consistently good. Friendly and old fashioned. A genuine oasis of a traditional pub in a desert of mediocrity.
tom.delamonte - 9 Mar 2008 16:22
Smart pub, excellent pint of Jennings and service with a smile.
What more could you ask for?
boltonbloke - 3 Mar 2008 12:38
Probably the best real ale 'drinkers' pub in central Chorley at the moment. The beer is consistently good and the atmosphere is very relaxed. Excellent!
philmcg - 16 May 2007 13:00
Excellent beers although I wish they would keep one of Jennings stronger beers as a regular. Cockerhoop or Sneck for instance.
manstein - 13 Feb 2007 19:17
Quality pub - well kept beers.
anonymous - 18 Jun 2006 15:16
Existing solely on wet sales, this says a lot for the quality of the beer, which is excellent. Only casque marque pub in Chorley. Jennings beers plus guests. Old fashioned and friendly, a true local pub. Don't miss it.
tom.delamonte - 27 Apr 2006 21:27
A great pub with occasional music - blues, folk etc. Great beer and atmosphere. Don't miss it.

A classic multiroomed pub with lots of character and excellent Jennings - wonderful
