After my previous not so good experience I thought I better visit again. This time a much better experience.
A lovely traditional pub that seems quite out in the country, even though only a few minutes walk from Ipswich Town Centre. A nice walk through Cristchurch Park from town can take you there. Walk past Christchurch Mansion and keep going for a few minutes looking for the first right hand gate to exit. 6 hand pumped ales were available Adnams Best and Broadside, Youngs Bitter, Caledonian Deuchars IPA, Black Sheep and Brains SA. It is a friendly pub with quite a bit of banter going on whilst I was there. The pub is split into 3 areas lounge, saloon and a back room. In the lounge all the available meals are on the wall facing you. Quite a choice of meals even some game was available. A number of pictures of yesteryear Ipswich were on the walls also.
I will certainly return again as the beer quality was good and it seemed like a real community local.

A great traditional pub with varied selection of beers and food really well cooked. Friendly staff and sensible prices. I don't get to puibs as much as I used to, but although this is a couple of miles from my home, I'm definately going to make it my "local".

Fantastic food, friendly staff and a good selection of standard bitters including Young's, Black Sheep and one or two others. They are always in good nick and it's worth dropping in for the food and a few pints of an evening.
Clare and I love the place.

Arrived at this pub today at 2:50 to be told 'the pubs closing at 3:00' in a way as though he would not serve me. Considering I was on a tight work lunch I would have finished it within about 15-20 minutes. I thought that pubs served their last pints in this period with about 10 - 20 minutes drinking up time, obviously not here. Considering how many people were in the pub I reckon he would have been very hard pushed to close the pub and empty it by 3:00!!!!

what a smashing old style pub, been there loads of times and is my favorite eating hole.
dave the chef is great and creates top class food from scratch no microwave rubbish here. his fish dishes are our favoite and my wife loves the sea food pasta.
the beer is kept to a very good standard and is of a good price.
the rest of the staff including the landlady are all very friendly and have time for the punters.
i personaly dont agree at all to the comments above but every one has there own opinon.
to sum it up its resturant quality food at pub prices with pub portions.( none of this posh rubbish which leaves you trying to find the chippy afterwards and after parting with a huge wad of dosh).
this is my favorite pub but coming in a close second is the fat cat at spring road which is like going into a mini beer festival.

Unfortunately the quality of the food can be very mixed. The chef is 'self taught' and though he cooks some good traditional dishes he tends to over-stretch himself. There is an irritating tendency to over-sell everything 'Spanish' or 'Moroccan' vegetables 'thai style' 'indian' anything but simple food cooked well. Staff lack confidence in their cuisine and spend alot of time telling customers how good it is rather than listening to their feedback.

lovely local pub, family friendly, lovely atmosphere, right by the park which is great. The food though is really bad and when i complained(very politely) the landlady took it as a personal insult and went on and on about it, really embarrassing me. i would go again for a cosy pint after a run around with the kids in the park but stay away from the food , and dont dare make a comment on it!!!

A very attractive building from the outside that has been sadly neglected inside. There is graffiti on the walls of the gents and no toilet seat. Food is mixed with some very good fish dishes and peculiar 'thai' food cooked in a tomato based sauce.
Regular crowd of car salesmen and fat nouveau riche tories. Bigots and right wingers warmly welcome!

Reputed to be the oldest brick-built pub in the town The Woolpack still has traditional small rooms. It used to be a popular stopping point just outside the town walls; now it is filled with friendly locals quietly enjoying the Youngs and other real ales available. The kitchen is open every lunchtime and evening.
