Lovely pub - decked out old worldy, very nice ambience. A Greene King pub I believe, had two of their Suffolk offerings on and the more local Dark Star Hophead which is an excellent beer and the one I opted for - it was in good condition.

A beautiful pub located in an idyllic Sussex Town. The pub has a real oldly worldly feel to it and captures Sussex past. I opted for the Dark Star Hophead although I was tempted to try the Cask Ale. The pub also has a lovely beer garden and the food was excellent. The Sunday Roasts, the beef and lamb are the best we have had for some time. The meat was of high standard and cooked to perfection, as was the veg. We will definitely go back.

This place was shut on a sunny, July Saturday afternoon... what! Go to The Smugglers if you want a nice pub in Alfriston. Skip The Star (big mistake). Sorry to be negative, but really... shut!

Fantastic pub. Full of old world charm - this has been a pub since the late 1300s. It's all exposed wood and beams, and a big fireplace burning logs. The atmosphere is wonderful. You could sit in here all day and let the world go by. The staff are friendly, polite and helpful, and there are free newspapers left around.

However the main point of a pub is the beer, and on our visit two beers were not available, so the only choice was GK IPA - not the most exciting of beers, and it was served in adequate, but not top condition.

These days food is also highly important in pubs. The pub seems to have ambitions in this area, and has been listed in Michelin since 2007, so it was unfortunate on our visit that several menu items were unavailable. Fair play to the chef, when pesto had run out for the child's spaghetti, he was prepared to improvise and make a tomato and cheese sauce on request. Though he forgot the cheese, so the meal was insipid. We ordered the Welsh rarebit and were as equally astonished as the couple last year to find that it mainly consisted of a door step of warmed brown bread. The sauce was smeared thinly on top with little cheese content (if any!) - it tasted mainly of flour and Worcester sauce. A shame.

We loved the pub itself. Loved the aroma of the wood fire. It felt good to be there. I would be more than willing to try it again, as I suspect we came at the wrong time on the wrong day. With a better beer and a better menu choice I'm sure we'd feel this was one of the best pubs on the planet!

What the George has is atmosphere. And an amazing if pricey menu. As a venue for a meal on a winter's evening, its hard to beat. A special occasion pub. Tried the shared charcuterie platter: delicious. Ale: Abbot, Old Trip, IPA - year in , year out but its very well kept and at least you know what you're going to get. Good palce for a pint and a read of the newspapers when quiet and a slice of Olde England.

Pleasant atmosphere. My wife and I both fancied a light lunch so ordered
welsh rarebit. It was horrible! The rarebit was drowned with Worcester Sauce, and was served on a huge chunk of bread. The presentation put us off, even before tasting it. Both of us left the majority of our lunch. Very disappointing!

There are a number of good real ale pubs in this area so finding this is a GK pub was disappointing. IPA, Abbot and Olde Trip are on offer, no guest ale. Didn't fancy any of them so plumped for an Aspalls cider. The bar seemed to be run as a sideline with all hands helping in the kitchen and serving food. On the positive side the three course meal was good value, well presented with decent portions served by very pleasant staff.

Have been using the George on and off for some years and it has a mixed reputation locally. We ate here recently and it was suprisingly good. As mentioned by an earlier reviewer, it is best to book particularly at the weekend. The downside was that the beer (IPA) could have been better and they did not have any guest beer on. The prices are also a bit steep and I suggest that the Smugglers is better value with a wider choice for beer but avoid the food

This is a nice pub with friendly staff and great food (a bit expensive but worth it). Good Guiness and few guest beers on tap and a nice beer garden.

I really like this pub, eaten there several times and the food has always been good. It is of course one of my pet hates, a GK pub, but there is always a decent guest beer and they always have a pile of newspapers whic is handy when you've forgotten to buy one.

Great pub. Visited on the Saturday evening of the bank holiday and had a great evening. The food is excellent and a decent range of beer too.

I don't know if booking is essential, but it's worth doing if you want to sit in the bar area (as I do) rather than the restaurant.

Love this pub! Cozy, friendly staff, great food (always have a great selection)and great 'proper' beer! Always stop in and visit when I'm home visiting my parents.

Great chef, great food, excellent varied lunch and dinner menus, a perfect pub/restaurant in a beautiful village. The bar staff are very hard working, polite and particularly helpful. I travel around the country stopping at similar pubs and this really is the best. (The Sirloin was a delight). I would totally recommend the George Inn whether you are stopping locally, perhaps looking for a room for the night or just passing through this delightful village. The new themed guest rooms are first class.

I used to pop into this pub occasionally (I have since moved out of the area). Back then the landlord at The George was a very hard working and hospitable kiwi chap called Anthony. From memory his wife's name was Andrea. By the sound of things Anthony has moved on and been replaced by Roland. from the comments on this site it all seems to have gone a bit pear shaped! what a pity. Under the previous landlord this pub was going great guns. just goes to show you how important the "guvnor' is.

The George Inn is an incredible place to go if you want to forget the usual stresses of life and want to relax in a warm, friendly atmosphere. The food has been excellent every time we have visited (quite a few now). The new guest rooms really add to the general high quality of The George and, the exceptional service you receive every time keeps us coming back. An unforgetable weekend away for those who want to escape from the city occassionally.

This is a typical ROB (Rip off Britain) pub/restaurant. It's not sure whether its a pub or a restaurant. My most recent experience was, regrettably, not good. Food was VERY expensive, low quality, soup bordering tasteless, and the service mediocre.

This place is great. Fabulous country pub with friendly staff and landlord. We had great food there and loved the atmosphere. We'll be going back to stay in one of their rooms this December whilst visiting relatives.

I have been to this pub on many occasions, and the food and atmosphere were fantastic! I would thoroughly recommend this lovely country pub to anyone and everyone!

We ate at this pub recently, the menu was very enticing. The beer was good as was the general atmosphere. We sat down at the table to be served the most appauling food I have every been given - this is a great shame as the location both the but and the village are ideal.
