user reviews of the Red Lion, Fernhurst

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

We live very close to the Red Lion. We have used it for years, both before the current landlord was in place and since he arrived last year.

We have friends coming to say with us. Accordingly, 6 weeks before we wanted to eat at the Red Lion we booked a specific table (the table was in a quiet part of the restaurant because we have a 5 year old and, of course, because we wanted to be able to talk to our friends).

Today, 1 week before we were due to eat at the Red Lion, we checked the booking and were told we were to be moved to a table in the main pub because, and I quote, "people who come ever year want that table".

Now, leaving aside the compliance with the licensing laws, the attitude of Mr J Groves (the licensee) is quite amazing.

He was quite clear that accommodating more people (he mentioned 18 but goodness knows how they would fit) is much more important to him that honouring an existing contractual booking and/or making sure that a 5 year old is actually able to accompany his parents and their friends on a night out.

My message is clear; avoid the Red Lion if you want the arrangements you have made honoured. It really is not that good and it is not worth the effort.

Decent pint of ESB and a pleasant pub in the favoured East side of Fernhurst. I'd suggest spell-checking when writing the menu-board out as I'm sure the food is lovely - it really does matter. But it's the beer that wins through in the end and the smiley service should ensure this village pub's survival in these tough times.

Wow
Much improved pub--the brass tack and flock carpet
Has gone!!now white walls black leather chairs
The food is much better too!!
Needs hand made piping fresh hot chips al dente veg
Not the boiled stuff or the soggy salads with dressing
The puds are now great and the artisan ice cream
Seriously Real
Handmade in pulborough is the nicest in england

If you could loose the 2 stroppy waitresses
Then you will be the happy busy pub that
Fernhurst deserves

New owners but still fillers tied. Luckily the old staff have remained and it remains a nice locals and visitors country pub.

Beers well kept and food reasonable.

Still worth a visit

After an energetic walk from Haslemere via Black Down we arrived rather circuituously at the Red Lion.

A pretty traditional pub inside and out with three Fullers beers and Adnams bitter available. Why Fullers have a tied house out here I cannot say, but it's still open and seemingly thriving.

The staff were very welcoming and friendly and there was a steady trade. The food was excellent, with the Steak and Kidney Pudding a magnificent thing, towering over the plate like the Devil's Tower in Close Encounters. Reasonably priced too.

Would happily re-visit if in the area again

Great pub and gone from strength to strength. polite and friendly landlord-lady and staff lovely atmosphere, nice rear garden and the food is varied and excellent value. The beers are quite good but would prefer to see a few more varieiets on tap real ale and lager than exist at the moment.
Dog friendly too , so one of our favourite places on a quiet village green.

Cracking pub...well kept beer..though all are Fullers except one guest ale which changes regularly...landlord knows his beer and as such it's kept well..

food is good too and varied..

Dogs welcome and children aren't allowed in the main bar area...which is a good thing IMO...
Pleasant back garden and seating out the front too.

gets busy on Sundays, especially is weather's good...but don't let that put you off..

Also open all day throughout the week, which is unusual for the area...

If you want a view of traditional English landscape and the typical village scene, then this is the place to head. The seats out front add that idyllic feel to the taste of good ale.

The staff are very friendly and the landlord is a CAMRA member happy to chat about beer. It's all Fullers with one guest, Elsie Mo, when I was there. All served in good condition.

Haven't tried the food yet, but it's often busy with people eating even weekdays.

This is a much friendlier establishment with properly kept beer, when compared to the Kings Head on the Midhurst Road. Don't go there when you could have so much more in the Lion.

Large group of us went for a walk from the pub on Sunday and returned 3 hours later for lunch. Very friendly, excellent London Pride, and had just put on Bengal(?) Lancer, an IPA that friends assured me was very good. Good range of tasty, well priced food. A jobsworth gave us a hard time about parking in the 'Private' (but no obvious signs) adjacent village hall car park - but relented when we said we were eating in the pub later - landlady pays a nominal rent for the privilege.

Good village pub.
Beer by Fullers (tied house).
Pride very drinkable.
Food also very good, pub grub with a few specials.
Quiz night so was busy with locals, all very friendly.
Worth a visit.

Some may be correct on the small choice of beers but we do not drink real ale so cannot really comment.
Astonished by some of the comments here as we regularly use the pub now over all the others in the entire area around Haslemere as the food is such good value with generous portions and a very cosy friendly atmosphere.

The curries particularly are extremely good ehre when they have them and a superb chef.

Friendly enough staff with an absolutely fantastic village green location this pub is excellent until you order food. The meat in particular was overcooked and dry on every dish we ordered and the dessert - treacle tart microwaved to within an inch of its life - was dismal. To be fair they gave us our desert for free but we didn't appreciate being told that "every one else loves it" when we complained about a banoffee pie which contained bananas so over-ripe they were fermenting hidden under mounds of bad canned cream.

Have to say I was disappointed with this Fullers pub. Feel the price was expensive even for the area. And I had to ask for a 'top up', although this was given without question.

A classic village local although as it is situated on the Sussex border, one might have expected the beer of choice to have been Harvey's rather than metropolitan Fuller's. After a heavy trudge across the superb walking country round and about, this comfortable nook is well worth the stop.

I now avoid this pub because the land lady is very unfriendly and she always short measures the beer - just to the legal minimum allowed. Pricey at it.

Wonderful "proper pub". I wish I lived near enough for it to be my local. Excellent beers, food and staff. A bit pricey but you get what you pay for. Sometimes they get some odd "amateur" customers (see 2006 review) but not too often.

Great pub this - good atmosphere and still a local for those in Fernhurst. Regular Pub quizzes etc.

Two bar areas with plenty of tables and a little room off to one side. Quite happy for you just to go for a drink. Always a selection of 3 ales and a good range of food starting from just under 10 per meal.

Situated alongside the village green with tables outside. Plenty of parking just 50yds down the road in the village hall car park if busy.

This is a great little pub: the food is really excellent and the service very friendly. Great, beer selections including London Pride (my fav), very busy sometimes, but always great attenti ve service. Prices reasonable for what you get, which is very high standard and Yum! Yum! Wonderful position on a lovely English village green.

A group of six of us went here specially on Sunday December 10, booking in advance for lunch. We walked for a couple of hours from Liphook, and arrived starving. Sadly, it was a massive disappointment - mainly because of the very unfriendly staff.

Decor wise, it's a very small pub, low ceilings, cream walls. We were sat in a small, plain room just off the main lounge area. the food was good (although over-priced, at 12 for a straightforward roast dinner, 13 for a casserole) but the service was diabolicle.

The bar staff were really unfriendly - one young(er) bar maid had a strop with us because we ordered in pairs - she did a good job of embarassing us in front of everyone. Another waitress snapped that "it's busy" when there was only 3 people waiting to be served - she called that busy!

We spent over 100 between us, and didn't get so much as a smile - not that the amount you spend should have any bearing on how you are treated!

Oh well, you've been warned... (nice walk though).

Fate took me here for Sunday Lunch at the weekend. Old pub but very clean looking. Very low beamed ceiling and was a Fuller's pub. It also had a guest ale on and the beer was in good nick. The food i had was really good. There is a lot of outside seating and it overlooks the village green. Not as special as some old country pubs but certainly worth a pint if you happen to be passing.

It may be odd to find a Fullers pub this far from London, but the Red Lion is all you'd want from a country pub. Rustic interior, a pleasant garden, friendly staff, good atmosphere.

Lovely pub in a wonderful village green setting. Quiant low ceilings and Fullers ales. No food on Mondays
