user reviews of the George, Old Oxted

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Now has the same ownership as the nearby Crown. The George's food and cocktails are excellent.

No longer a Hall and Woodhouse I don't think but can't be sure.... a decent pint of Harveys on tap and friendly service. Smart interior nothing not to like.

Badger beers in good condition and a very helpful landlord. Well worth a visit.

Visited recently and enjoyed the best pub Sunday roast I have ever had.

Used to work for this pub...
Manager was awful, knew NOTHING about pubs. Was usually drunk before 8pm and chatting up locals. Took extreme liberties. The manager, Ian, was recently in the local news after stealing the takings and reportedly leaving the country. STILL to this day never paid me for my time there.

Avoid for a lengthy period...the Old Bell next door is better by miles!

Badger Brewery ales available here which is no bad thing.

Service friendly enough and a pleasant enough place to discuss the merits of one hit-wonder beat combo Mental As Anything.

Just to keep you guys updated, have now phone their head office twice to try and get a refund on the deposit for christmas day but after being told they would ring back no one has! looks like the whole company could not care less!!!!!!!!!!!!

chloesteel's treatment was awful. Could the Manager shed any light on why it took 1.25 hours to serve a sandwich today ? Also why they're was a need to be rude ?

Visited the George for lunch with the family yesterday. Excellent. Food was great (pasta dishes are well worth trying), a beautiful pint of Badger and attentive service. Can't ask for more.

I used to love the George but presume they've had a change of management because the last visit was terrible! Beer was awful (pipes don't clean themselves!) and the service was even worse. Used to be the best pub in oxted - dramatic fall from grace!

Visited the George last night as a regular, if not often visitor. Not a disaster but I presume it has changed hands recently as the experience was somewhat mediocre compared to previous visits. Food seemed average compared to the excellent fare served by the presumably previous regime. Staff were there for you but not welcoming. Will try it again, perhaps I caught them on a bad night but I suspect not.

Reasonably well kept pub with decent Hall and Woodhouse beers available. Refit a couple of years ago set it back a bit, spoiled the homely feel by tring to make it more trendy. Staff can be surly at times, but it's worth a pint on the way to the much better Crown across the street.

Steak overcooked, but not a bad pub overall.

A fine establishment with exemplary food and staff. Friendly and entertaining. Keeps the unclean of Oxted and Hurst Green out with strict over 21 scheme in bar. Menu constantly changes, Bob's Steak and Guiness Pie a personal favourite! A gastro pub with a lively bar Thursday - Saturday, well worth a visit. Just make sure you're not served by Nick, he's a bit of funny one, can get all sorts of responses!

This place was recommended to me by friends. We all live in croydon and think it's well worth the 40 min drive to visit this place. It serves great food and the female partner is very nice. It isnt like a traditional pub, its more like a gasto pub. I have even taken other friends to eat there and they loved it and have been back several times. 10/10

As a regular over the past 2 years I have seen this place go steadily downill. Yesterday I found the staff to be about the rudest I have seen in a pub in what is a very competitive area. The food seems to get more and more pricey and the staff more and more surly. Will not be returning in the near future..As another comment - try The Crown across the road.

Refit has ruined it - stayed for a half and that was long enough. They've tried to make it look like a winebar and as a result you don't feel relaxed and comfortable. Beer was ok

Food too expensive for what it is - try the Crown over the road

Also it is now a Trinity pub so I'm guessing no longer Hall and Woodhouse.

I was in this pub the other day and was not eating and I found it very welcoming. They should probably make the bar area slightly larger and the restaurant slightly smaller though and then it would be spot on. A lovely pub.

There are a few things that I hate when walking into a pub nowadays and one of them is as soon as you have stepped through the door being asked if you have booked a table or if you are planning on eating.

You guessed it, it happened here, put us right off having a drink, had a quick look at the menu thrust into our hands. Food looked expensive and not many people eating, all this combined with the attidude problem of the staff had us walking our of the door fairly quickly!

Pros:
Excellent pub recently refurbished. Beer quality is very good; one of the best kept pints of Tanglefoot around. Large restaurant/no smoking area. Friendly staff.
Cons:
Food is very expensive, poor veggie options. Smokers are allowed to sit at the bar, so it's difficult to avoid their noxious exhalations!
