Has had a refurbishment and is looking much lighter. The menu has also had an overhaul, there are lunchtime deals to be had and the food is very good, Sunday lunches remain huge with home made bread rolls. The bear is still in residence.

Thanks to a road diversion on our way back from camping yesterday, we were lucky to find this traditional and historic pub with home cooked food. We sat in the beautiful garden to eat and drink and this experience finished our holiday off a treat. The food is exceptional and all home cooked. We enjoy home cooked food and can be very fussy when eating out. I can honestly say, this is the best pub lunch, if not meal, that we have had out in a long long time! Such good value as well. We only wish we lived nearer to it, as we would become regulars! The fillet steak sandwich (homemade bread), chips, salad, homemade coleslaw and cous cous salad was our choice..... tasty and plenty of it.....just superb! Hope to pop in again one day soon.

Slowest bar service in the history of ale. Food is ok but portion size is not always on a pr with price. Standard Hall and Woodhouse ale on tap and in bottles. Needs to try harder.

I remember the place before that pole was installed, it's all 1980s artificial beams in the that part.

Three quid wanted for a bowl of chips! Had a brie & grape salad there a few weeks back, miniscule amount of brie. Oh for the old days and the spit roasts for 4.50 and and the seafood platter for 6 which included half a lobster. I only go in to say hello to the bear and have a swift drink now.

This pub is, quite frankly, odd. It's very dark and dingy and there's a metal pole in the middle of the bar area which appears to be supporting the ceiling. Beers are all Hall & Woodhouse type stuff so if you like that, then fine, but if you like nice beer, not so good. There are better pubs in this village.

Nice looking pub but the worst experience we have had in a pub. Went in mainly for food. It was a busy day but they took our order of what should have been 'quick' pub food - fish chips. An hour later we went back to the bar and asked why so long. Bar staff surly and dismissive. Turned our our order was 'In my co-workers pocket'. Was told it would be another hour to serve us!! Asked manager if this was the case as we had to get a train back to London. He gave his personal assurance it would be 15 to 20 minutes wait. 45 minutes later someone came from the kitchen to ask what we had ordered!! Needless to say we asked for money back and went back to London hungry and very fed up. Never again.

Stayed there recently would not do so again. Room was freezing when we arrived, the toilet seat was loose and dangerous. When someone tried to fix it they just wiped their dirty hands on the towels without washing them first. I could not in all honesty recommend this place to anyone which is a shame as the village is lovely and the food at the Bent Arms is good. Value for money very poor. Find another place to stay.

NEVER EVER EVER book to stay here. We booked the whole place out for the weekend of our wedding and thankfully called to check all was okay with the booking. After waiting a few days for someone to get back to us we were advised that an error had been made and that when they had copied over the bookings in to their new diary they had put ours in for the wrong month and the dates we had booked were now taken by someone else - however, for the inconvenience we could pop in for a free pint - because that really makes up for needing to find 10 rooms for our wedding. I really couldn't quite believe the incompetence and lack of real apology.

Food is good and you get plenty for what you pay for. There is a but though. The restaurant can struggle quite badly if there is a large party booked so food can be late and cold. There can also be insufficient staff when it is busy, and the bar can be left with no service as the staff get pulled off the serve in the restaurant. Draft products also seem to be under stocked so can frequently run completely out.

Went for sunday lunch today (28/11/10) pub was very busy with a private party which is fine, we asked for a table and the guy behind the bar pointed at 2 vacant ones which were both dirty, as they were busy you can forgive this,we then ordered at the bar and waited not to long to be fair when the starter came we didnt even have a napkin, to be fair it was nice
When the main coarse came the plates were cold the potatoes were cold and the meat was cold full house well done. staff were all young and all seemed to hang about in the kitchen we know why this must be the warmest place in the pub what a horrible experience we will never go back again

Went there yesterday. Good choice of drinks including an excellent pear cider I'd never seen before anywhere. Barmaid was friendly and helpful. I was surprised there weren't more people there. The place looks beautiful inside and there's a nice big garden area round the back as well.

The food was really good, the only black mark being that they managed to turn my order for a medium steak to a well-done one, however it tasted great and aside from that perhaps the menu needs to have a few more options.

All in all a really nice place.

Went for the early evening special - 2 courses 7.95 3 courses 9.95. Menu was fairly limited and not particularly fancy but the food was good; well cooked, well presented, service was great, very attentive. I would definitely go there again, not for a special event, but for a good value-for-money meal.
The friends we went with live locally and have enjoyed several early evening meals there in recent months.
The bread rolls alone are worth the visit, especially the onion scrolls!

Beer ok. Always empty - no atmosphere - Manager tends to be grumpy and rude.
pintalot - 14 Feb 2010 13:17
About 7yrs ago this was a very good pub with a fantastic hotel attached, now its not even a shadow of its former self.
Grumpy unhelpful Manager who would struggle to organise a *** up in a brewery, along with rooms that are of a very low standard of hygiene, make this one Hotel I would recommend not visiting.

The food does taste very good, but I have been put off eating there, when I heard from someone who works at a nearby supermarket that the manager buys a lot of his food for the kitchen from their reduced(going out of date that day) section.

On the plus side the choice of drinks available is large.

2 years ago this pub used to do a fantastic menu in the restaurant and in the bar area. then the prices went sky high and from being full over the weekend it went to being completely empty. The lack of trained staff and very young (which is not their fault) has helped in this matter. I used to visit regulary on a mid week night and on Sundays for my roast. But it has changed dramatically. There is no service to be seen, and the food has gone down hill tremedously.

This is such a lovely pub, full of character, really nice, had a sandwhich for lunch, amazing probably the best sandwhich I have ever had! only comment would make is too many children for my liking, but it was a lunch time and does have a hotel attached.

My wife & I returned to the Bent Arms recently having been away for a while & were as impressed as ever with the quality of the food. The steak sandwich was particularly good with special praise going to the home baked bread.

A few days later we went back for the three course weekday special (all for 9.50) & although the menu is pretty short the food was as good as ever & at that price it has to be the best value anywhere in Mid-Sussex - make the most of the offer while it lasts.

Food remains the great attraction, but beer and wine are good value and well kept. Why does it always have to be so cold in here though?
workhard - 12 Nov 2007 15:55
Had a good meal here while looking at houses in the area. Pleased to see the bear in still in residence. This used to be my rather far flung local while living in HH in the early 90s and had some excellent nights on Badger or K&B Sussex. Can't speak for the accomodation!
pipsby - 30 Aug 2007 17:35
Stayed here recently, the accommodation is absolutely disgusting. We stayed in room three. When we arrived we discovered a brown stain in the bed as well as some hairs. Complained to the manager and this was changed. He stated that they must have forgotten to change the bed. We didnt believe this because the bed was neatly made on our arrival they simply couldnt be bothered to change it. Other faults include an incredibly slow filling cistern, no towel rail (just a part of the bracket on the wall where it should be), a shower that was impossible to regulate the temperature, dried toothpaste splattered up the wall by the wash basin (even the little things they clearly cant be bothered to clean) Even the fire instructions on the back of the door were hanging off. The room was painted a disgusting yellow colour onto wood chip. The bed was bodged together with odd screws, tape and bits of wood. The food downstairs in the bar was quite nice however.
It probably sounds like we are really fussy, this is not the case, yellow paint etc you can put up with but poor cleanliness is not acceptable. We paid 120.00 for two nights, a complete rip off. We thought this area was posh? Not in here. We would not recommend this place at all.

The beerpumps were being polished when I arrived yesterday lunctime; always a promising sign and the 3 beers did not disappoint, the Badger, Tanglefoot and Sussex bitter (not Harveys) were all in great shape.
It seems to be popular for food and the lunch rush kicked in soon after 12:30 keeping Lorna, the lone barstaff, busy with food & drinks orders and service for the bar and restaurant as well as some peripheral duties for the attached hotel.
The bar itself features an effective, but not original, sloping timbered ceiling and has some curious paraphernalia such as a ships speed navigation mechanism and a rather unfortunate stuffed bear. Large grassy beer garden to the rear. Intrinsic to a Lindfield mini-crawl.

well i stayed at the pub recently and i thought it was fine. I mean its only a spot to rest your head and i had a fantastic meal downstairs so I was very happy with my stay and I would return again! cheers

Stayed in this pub recently. Twin room (Room No. 5), absolutely hideous. The walls were painted in a shade of dark blue which at night made it look like a dungeon. Dark blue carpet (different shade). Blue beadspreads (another shade) washed out and with bleach marks. Shower room door jammed on carpet, towels were too small. One bedside light, asked for another but never got one. TV didn't work - 1 station only. Didn't have phone in room. And charged 60 - a rip off. Would definitely not recommend.

This place is just fantastic. It has changed a lot in the last few months and for the better. The food here before was nothing to write home about but now its really fantastic. I would say its very similar to the food served at a restaurant called Jeremys in Haywards Heath. Definately of the same standard and above, and the prices are cheaper. I will be coming back again and again!!!

Sunday lunch there this weekend and the first time I have eaten although stop regularly for a swift pint on the way home! Nice, relaxed atmosphere and fantastic food. Looks like it might serve you well to get there early and full compliments to the friendly team too.
bigbadjimmy - 19 Feb 2007 17:42
Really cosy place, massive open fires in the winter new sofa and lots of oldy worldy brick a brack,no juke box a couple of fruities, plenty of real ale and a few largers, the resturant is great and in the summer the garden is nice and big, the only two things I say its missing are, a TV for sport and the most important "atmosphere", when you go there you have to create your own cause most of the punters keep themselves to themselves. staff are friendly
burz - 27 Jan 2007 13:11
The Bent Arms has always sold a good selection of well kept beers and continues to do so. Add to that a restaurant that serves quality, good value food in very pleasant surroundings and what more could you ask for?

My wife and I were so impressed with the place that we even had our wedding reception there a couple of years ago and were not disappointed. Howard and his staff did themselves proud.

Try it out on a sunny day and if you fancy a diversion between beers, wander up and down the High Street for a while - lovely!

This Pub is outstanding! A new chef team has started and they are doing wonders. The best pub food around anywhere in the area. I cant believe how good the food is, I ate there recently and was so impressed by how beautifully it was presented and the flavours where unbelievable! Well done! ps. You have to try the local Vensison with celeriac dauphinoise YUM!!!

Like simondavis I'm happy to travel a fair few miles to take a pint here, guest ales are usually in very good condition and there is a decent wine list. Food is tremendous value for money, the sandwiches are HUGE.
workhard - 4 Sep 2006 17:21
I'm happy to drive nearly 10 miles to drink the Tanglefoot which they sell enough of to be able to present in good condition. There is a good selection of good food and a range of other Hall and Woodhouse and guest beers. Really interesting pub
